At her home on Park Ave., Medina, N.Y. Fri, April 27, 1894, at 6 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Nancy A. ABELL passed from this life to the Spirit land; at the age of 71 yrs. Mrs. Abell had been a constant physical sufferer for several years, yet had looked upon the bright side trusting that time would displace her ills and place her in a condition to enjoy the pleasures and comforts of life, but notwithstanding hope was so prominent her suffering had been so constant and extreme, nature could not withstand the pressure and the Master said "child come home." Mrs. Abell had been a resident of Orleans county during most of her life.
She was the youngest member of the large family of Deacon Wm. C. Potter, who emigrated from Sherman, Conn., where the family were all born, to Perry, N.Y. in 1825. The family were 17 days in prosecuting their overland journey and after one year's stay in Perry came to Shelby, N.Y. and Orleans County had been her home since that date. Mrs. ABELL early in life became an earnest follower of those great truths contained in God's words and was ever a fter faithful in the consistent, intelligent and conscientious discharge of all her Christian duties. She united with the Presbyterian Church in Medina in 1832.
The funeral services were attended at her home on Monday, April 30, 1894 at 2 o'clock p.m. Rev. F.T. Latham pastor of the Baptist Church of Medina officiating and the remains deposited in Boxwood Cemetery.

The veteran member of the State Police was killed almost instantly when a car operated by George HAYES, 31, a farm worker living at the Coloney Labor Camp, ran him down while he was directing traffic at the scene of a hit and run accident on the Sawyer Rd. six miles northeast of Albion shortly after 11 o’clock Saturday night. According to a report of the fatal accident made to Sheriff Carl KLEINDIENST and members of the Batavia Barracks of the State Police who investigated, by Trooper Leo WATKINS, he, with Sergeant ADAMS, had been called to the scene shortly after 9:30 Saturday night to investigate an alleged minor hit and run accident involving a car and a truck. The two police were directing traffic past the scene when Sgt. Adams on the west side of the road was hit by a northbound car, which WATKINS said was traveling at a fast rate of speed. The accident happened shortly after 11 p.m.
Said WATKINS 'I was only a few feet away from the Sergeant when he was stuck(sic). The car just missed me and threw Sgt. ADAMS about 40 feet.' The injured trooper was rushed to the Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital in Albion by members of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, who had been called, but he died enroute. Coroner Aden SNYDER of Holley reported Sunday that after an autopsy perfomed by Dr. Joseph TAUMENBERG of Batavia, pathologist for the Orleans County Laboratory, that death had been 'almost immediate' and was caused by a rupture of the Aorta, the large blood artery leading from the heart. The victim also suffered from cerebral concussion, fracture of both lower legs, fractured of the hips on both sides and multiple lacerations and abrasions.
HAYES, the driver of the car which inflicted fatal injury to Sgt. ADAMS, was questioned by members of the Sheriff’s office and troopers of the Batavia Barracks where he was given a blood test for sobriety, for more than an hour. He was then taken to the scene of the accident in front of the Colony Labor Camp and to the camp for further questioning. Members of Troop A conducting and assisting in the investigation with Trooper WATKINS were Lt. William STEVENSON of the East Avon Barracks; Cpl. Kenneth HEMMER of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Trooper John SAGE and with Sheriff KLEINDIENST were Deputies Raymond PREST, Roy VAGG and Chester SLADZINSKI.
HAYES, whose home was given as 540 10th St. Palmetto, Fla., admitted to authorities that he had been drinking. Authorities said that he was driving with Florida license plates and with a Florida operator's license and that he carried no liability insurance on his car. He stated to authorities that he had been arrested twice before for intoxication. HAYES is being held in Orleans County jail on a charge of criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle. He was taken before Peace Justice Milton KAST where he waived examination and is being held for the Grand Jury. The charge against him was brought by Trooper Leo WATKINS.
Sgt. ADAMS was a native of New York City. He was born August 28, 1896. DROWNED IN THE CANAL
At about the hour of eleven o'clock last Saturday night, pedestrians
and people near the canal bridge on Main street were startled by loud cries
for help. A crowd at once gathered at the bridge, but nothing more was
heard, and owing to the intense darkness and a drenching rain which was
coming down, nothing could be seen. Nevertheless there was no doubt but that
some unfortunate being had, in some manner, been precipitated into the
water, and that his cries were only hushed by the silent conqueror, death.
Lights and a row boat were soon procured, and after two hours search, the
body of a man was brought to the surface and was recognized as one Hiram
ALBRO, who resided in the part of the village near the canal. He having been
seen but a short time before the cries of distress were heard, wending his
way down Main street in an intoxicated condition, it was at once
conjectured that in the darkness he had mistaken his way and getting to near
the canal bank, had fallen in. The body was taken to his home and Coroner
Tompkins of Knowlesville, held an inquest Sunday noon, the verdict of which
was "accidental drowning while in a state of intoxication." ALBRO was about
50 years of age and leaves a wife and two young children in poor
circumstances.
(My note: The wife was Mary (nee ROOT) ALBRO and the two young children were Frank and Willard ALBRO)

Late last night occurred the death of Charles ALLEN at his home on Park Avenue. The deceased, who was seventy-eight years of age, had not been feeling well for the past month or two, but it was not until last Saturday that he was stricken with diabetes. His strong constitution was such that even then the attending physician held out hopes for his recovery, but his age was against him and he sank gradually until the end.
Mr. ALLEN was born in Niagara county in which locality his father was one of the earliest pioneers. They later removed to Parma, and Mr. ALLEN came to Medina at the close of the Civil War and had resided here ever since. The deceased was a quiet, unassuming man, well liked by his acquaintances and esteemed by all. He aspired to no political preferrment, yet took an active interest in the welfare of the village and its advancement. He was a kind and dutiful father, a good neighbor and a respected citizen.
He is survived by a daughter, Miss Elizabeth ALLEN of this place. The funeral will be held from the residence at three o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Harris of the Methodist Church, officiating.

Clifford ALLEN, age 25 years of Waltham, Massachusetts, and an employ of the Medina Stamping & Machine Company, was drowned in a pond in Kearney’s quarry just over the Prospect Avenue bridge early Saturday evening. ALLEN with friends had gone to the quarry where it is said he was to prove a boast of his prowess at swiming. He disrobed entered the water and never came to the surface.
Several men from the fire department and others were dispatched to the pond and by the use of grappling hooks soon recovered the body. It was taken to the undertaking rooms of O'Reilly & Son, where an inquest was held.
In his pocket was a letter from Andrew Donlan of Waltham. A telegram was sent to this place and word received Sunday morning from the father, directing that the body be sent to that city. Little was known of ALLEN here. He had been here for the past six months. It is thought that the coldness of the water caused too great a shock to a weak heart.

Funeral Tuesday For 11-year old Playmates Who Were Drowned Saturday
Tragic deaths of two eleven year-old boys, schoolmates and playmates, occurred Saturday when they were drowned in a waterhole on the farm of one of the boys, southeast of Medina. The boys are Walter Henry ARNETT, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Leila) ARNETT, Townline Road, Town of Shelby; and David H. ALLEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson (Dorothy) ALLEN, Hill Road, Town of Barre.
Schoolmates at the Brick Schoolhouse, Shelby District, a short distance from their homes which were located on roads parallel to each other, the boys spent Saturday in play on the farms, which ended tragically for them both. They sought out a waterhold(sic) on the farm occupied by the ALLEN family and owned by LeRoy Bishop. The waterhole, used for watering cattle, was 30 by 75 feet, and had risen to approximately 10 feet deep due to the recent rains.
Missing the boys at 5 p. m., Dorothy ARNETT, sister of one of the victims, started to search for them. She found their clothing on the bank of the waterhole and floating on which was a homemade raft. The Medina Fire Department was called by a neighbor, Howard Hill, at 5:30 o’clock, and responded with boat and grappling hooks. The first body, that of the ALLEN boy, was recovered after ten minutes of dragging, according to Fire Chief Ralph W. Whiting. The body of the ARNETT boy was recovered at approximately 7:15 o’clock, after one and one-half hours of dragging during a torrential rain storm. Assisting Chief Whiting and Medina firemen in dragging operations were Everette Carpenter, Charles Montgomery, James Smith and Harold Parker, the latter an employee on the Hill farm. The boys were both clad in swim trunks, and according to authorities, neither could swim.
Investigating were Sgt. Harry Adams of the Gaines Substation State Police, and Sgt. George Wood of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, also deputies of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office. Dr. L. F. Waters, coroner, issued verdicts of accidential deaths by drowning.
Surviving the ARNETT boy are, besides his parents, four brothers, Charles, Jr., Olin, William and Robert; and one sister, Dorothy; also his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse WATSON of Millville. Funeral services will be held from the Thibault Funeral Parlor, South Main Street, Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm., with burial in Mt. Albion Cemetery. The Rev. Stephen Kancar, pastor of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, will officiate.
Surviving the ALLEN boy, besides his parents, are five sisters, Anna, Joyce, Jeanette, Beatrice and Margaret; two brothers, Bennett and William, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James GREEN of Knowlesville, and Mrs. Bessie ALLEN of Albion. Funeral services will be held from the McNall Funeral Home Albion, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, with the Rev. McGill of the Albion Free Methodist Church officiating.

The many friends in this village of Mrs. C. E. ALLEN, wife of Prof. ALLEN, of Medina Free Academy, will be grieved to learn of her death, which occurred at the home of her parents in Marion, Wayne Co., N. Y, on Sunday last. Mrs. ALLEN had been for a long time a sufferer from the dreaded Bright’s disease, but bore up bravely, and had, we understand, traveled much during the present school vacation, expecting to return to Medina some time this week.
Newspaper: Medina Tribune dated 22 Aug 1889
Mrs. C. E. ALLEN, whose death occurred Sunday afternoon, was
Miss Genevieve M. CURTIS, daughter of Edward CURTIS, of the Marion
Enterprise. She was born in Madison, N. Y., in 1849, and married
Charles E. ALLEN at Chittenango in 1874. Professor ALLEN and his wife
went to Marion in 1879 and took charge of the Collegiate Institute,
which they conducted very successfully for four years, when they assumed
control of Medina Union School in 1884. Mrs. ALLEN graduated from White
Seminary, at Clinton, in 1871. Teaching was her life work. Commencing
at 16, she taught nearly every year till the last year of her life. As
a teacher she had few superiors and few equals. She had a very large
circle of friends. Her attachments were strong, her friendship like steel.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday.

John ALLEN, one of the oldest residents of Medina, died suddenly on Monday last from heart failure. Just returning from one of his customary duties which had taken him to North avenue, he fell and expired almost instantly without pain or realization of his condition. The news was a great and wholly unexpected shock to his family and many friends, as he had seemed in usual health up to the moment of his fall, and a cheery "Good Morning” had just left his lips. So sudden a parting cannot but bring sorrow. Yet there is room for gratitude that at the close of a long and useful life, he was spared all suffering and was taken quickly to his reward.
Mr. ALLEN was born in Pawlet, Vermont, August 15, 1822. Both parents were natives of the Green Mountain State, of Revolutionary ancestry, and the ALLEN line includes the name of Ethan ALLEN, of Ticonderoga. In 1849, Mr. ALLEN married Ellen WINCHESTER, who died in 1867. Their son, Dr. George ALLEN, born in 1853, died in 1897; after an honored career as a Homeopathic physician chiefly in Waterville, N. Y., and as First Assistant in the State Hospital for the insane at Middletown, N.Y.
In 1869, Mr. ALLEN married the youngest daughter of the late James JACKSON, Sr., of Medina, Julia E. JACKSON, who survives him, together with their daughter, Nellie J. ALLEN. One granddaughter, Gladys ALLEN, now a Senior at Mt. Holyoke College, and her mother, Dr. George ALLEN’s wife, of Middletown N. Y., are the other immediate relatives.
Mr. ALLEN was the eldest of eight children, and two sisters and his youngest brother are still living. He came to Medina in the early sixties, after some years of residence in Iowa where he was for a time county judge. With brief exceptions, Medina has been his home ever since. In business life, he was for a number of years associated with the late Oscar Whedon, and he held the office of Justice of the Peace for several terms. He was long a member of the Masonic Order, being repeatedly elected to the office of secretary. In his relations to the Methodist Episcopal Church of which he was a life long member, he will be especially remembered, serving as he did for years on the official board and also as church treasurer. In his last years, in spite of deafness, he was faithful in attendance at church services, and his love for the church and its progress was unabated.
Mr. ALLEN was one of those who was loved by everyone. He himself cherished all family and friendship ties and the place of his birth, with a clinging affection, which was richly repaid by all who knew him. Of a high sense of honor, he was scrupulously faithful in every relation of life, and he is held in an esteem which will not fade. Mr. ALLEN's wonderful health during his later years was a subject of remark among his friends, and though he deplored some of the infirmities of age which were his, they could not dim his enjoyment of many things in life. His step will be missed from our streets, his face from more than one home.
The funeral services are held this afternoon from the residence on Center street, in charge of Dr. F. S. Parkhurst, aud the interment is in Boxwood Cemetery.

One Man Survives Worst Recent Auto Tragedy
Orleans County was shaken late yesterday afternoon by the worst automobile tragedy in some time when three men were drowned and a fourth injured as a car plunged headlong into Oak Orchard Creek at the approach to the Kenyonville bridge. The accident took place at 3:05 p.m. according to witnesses. In freezing air, a rubber-suited frogman, with Sheriff Dept. and State Police personnel, wrecking crews, a N.Y. Telephone Co. crew and bystanders worked three hours to bring up the 1957 sedan from beneath the ice of the creek, with two of the victims still trapped inside.
Charles W. ANDERSON, 33, of Culver Rd., East Barre, the owner of the car, was one victim, along with John Albert COX, 21, of West Park St., Albion, his cousin and the driver; also George J. KREIWATIS, 27, of 223 E. State St., Albion. Lone survivor was Clayton Herbert COX, brother of one of the deceased, who was sitting in the rear seat and presumably escaped by being thrown through the rear window. He was seen above the icy surface by Arnold EDDY and Warren THOMAS, residents of the Kenyonville area, who helped him to safety prior to the trip to Arnold Gregory Hospital, Albion.
Orleans Sheriff John WILLIAMS, on thc scene just after the rescue of the only survivor, said the nearly-new sedan came from the south along Kenyonville Rd. and descended a grade from a knoll at the narrow approach to the bridge. Apparently going out of control, the machine struck and snapped off a utility pole at the south approach to the bridge, went through guard rails and a mesh fence, then plunged over the steep bank into 20 to 25 feet of water. The machine was out of sight beneath the water when a crowd gathered at the scene. The men, all unemployed or laid off from jobs, had made a trip yesterday to Niagara County to seek work on the new Lewiston power project. Upon return to this area, they had reportedly been on their way to the creek area to fish.
Clayton COX is in Arnold Gregory Hospital today suffering from a back injury, head laceration and shock. His brother, John, had been married two months ago to the former Dolores MARUSAK of Medina. During the early recovery attempts, Marcel COTE of Gaines, arrived at the scene with his rubber skin-diving suit and aqua-lung, and made the descent into the water to attach a cable to the car. COTE attached a line to John COX’s body which was partially outside the glass-less rear window. Dr. Walter SHIFTON, coroner, certified to the accidental deaths of the three before removal of bodies to the Merrill Funeral Home.
Besides his mother, Mrs. George BALLARD, ANDERSON leaves a brother, LeRoy of Batavia; three sisters, Miss Esther ANDERSON, and Mrs. George ALLEN, and Miss Nina ANDERSON of Tucson, Ariz.; his step-father, George BALLARD, of Albion RD.; a step-brother, Robert BALLARD of Albion, and two stepsisters, Mrs. William NARBURGH and Mrs. Leslie NARBURGH of Barre. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and had been employed until a month ago at the Taylor Instrument Co. in Rochester.
KREIWATIS leaves his wife, Millicent; a son Brian Keith; a daughter, Karen Leslie (born Feb. 28); his mother, Mrs. Velma BRUSKI, and his father, George Sr., all of Albion. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and had worked at the Albion plant of the Thomas J. Lipton Co. until recently. An outstanding football player at Albion High School, he had also played semi-pro football with the Medina A.C. in recent years.
COX, who was released from active duty with the Army last June after three years of service, was married on Jan. 4, 1958 to Dolores MATUSAK. Besides his wife he leaves his brother, Clayton, and another brother, Sidney of Carlton; his mother, Mrs. Mary COX of Albion; five sisters, Mrs. Harold GERMEO of Barre, Mrs. Beatrice OSTRANDER and Mrs. Betty RICHARDSON of Alabama and the Misses Florence and Mary COX of Albion. He had been employed at the U. S. Gypsum Co. plant in Oakfield and was laid off on Jan. 3 the day before his marriage. He attended Albion Central School. The Merrill Funeral Home at Albion announced at noon today that services for Cox were set for 2 p.m. Friday, for Anderson at 3:30 Friday, and for Kriewatis at 2 p.m. Saturday.
On the scene yesterday, in addition to Sheriff WILLIAMS and Undersheriff John KELLEY, were Lt. John P. NOHLEN and Trooper Roger GARDNER of State Police at Clarkson, Cpl. Clarence SCHARETT of B.C.I at Clarkson, and Cpl. Albert P. KOZLOWSKI and Trooper Martin WESCOTT of Albion substation.

Frank AUSTIN, the man who fell in a Yates orchard last fall and broke his back, died in Newark, N. J. on Saturday.
Posted by: Orleans County Genweb staff, 10 Feb 2006
Death oftentimes comes mysteriously and unexpectedly, but it is seldom that a business man is suddenly taken away and a community so shocked as in the case of Frank L. AUSTIN, of the firm of Austin & Dye, of the cold storage plant, who fell to his death on Friday night last. Mr. AUSTIN had been talking over business matters with Alfred H. Mileham, a confidential employee of the firm, during the evening. They parted shortly before nine o’clock, Mr. Mileham leaving for his home. Meanwhile William James, the watchman of the plant, and Floyd AUSTIN, son of the deceased, went to the Opera House.
When the latter gentlemen returned to the plant about eleven o’clock they found the door open. It had not been forced. All lights were out, but they turned on the electricity and both went below to test the temperature of the basement. There they discovered the mangled body of Mr. AUSTIN on top of the cage in the elevator shaft. A bicycle had fallen on top of him. Their first thought was that there had been an assault and robbery, but no reason was apparent therefor, as nothing had been taken from the building and there was no evidence of theft or violence.
The family and immediate friends, together with Dr. Whiting, were hastily summoned, and every effort made to revive the unconscious man, who suffered a severe fracture of the base of the skull. Drs. Maynard and Turner were later called, and a telephone message brought Dr. Hayd, a Buffalo specialist, on the 7:28 a. m. train, who at once confirmed the opinion of Dr. Whiting, that the fracture was fatal, and death resulted shortly afterward.
The inquest of Coroner Munson Monday agrees with the theory that death was the result of an accident, however mysterious it may otherwise seem. It is believed that the unfortunate man, finding his son's bicycle outside as he started to leave, carried it in, and fell down the elevator shaft while groping about in the darkness.
Mr. AUSTIN, although he had resided in the village but a few years, was one of the most popular and best known business men in Medina, and one whose loss from our midst will be greatly deplored. He had always lived in this vicinity and was nearly 46 years of age. Besides his widow, one son, Floyd, and two daughters, Fern and Oneta, survive.
The funeral took place Tuesday at 2 o’clock p. m., at the residence on West avenue, Rev. Dr. Parkhurst and Rev. George E. Price officiating. There was a large gathering of friends and neighbors to pay a final tribute of respect, and about every business place on Main street was closed during the funeral hour. The interment was at Millville, near which place he was born, and where deceased spent the early years of his life.
