LOCAL MAN LOST
Former resident of this village goes down on the Titanic.
The pall of grief which has spread over the whole country on account of the
greatest marine disaster in the history of the world is made darker and brought
nearer to our doors by the fact that an Orleans county man went to his death on
the ill fated Titanic.
William J. DOUTON, of Holley, was returning from a trip to England and expected to reach home on the Olympic, but was delayed, and so became a victim of Titanic’s final plunge. Mr. DOUTON, when he first came to this country, was a resident of Albion for several years. Miss Lillian BENTHAM, now of Rochester, but up to last fall a resident of Holley, was also on the Titanic, but is among the rescued.
Speaking of the disaster, the Holley Standard says: "the BENTHAM and DOUGHTON families have been intimate for years, and Miss BENTHAM made both the outgoing and returning voyage in Mr. DOUTON’s company. Dr. DOUGHTON’s name does not appear in any of the lists of the survivors on board the Carpathia, and as the great majority of those rescued were women and children it is probable that he went down with the doomed vessel. His wife (Emily) and his two daughters , Mrs. Charles COOPER of Hilton, and Mrs. EPKE of Holley and his many Holley friends, still cling to a hope that he may be among the rescued whose names have not yet been reported."

WAR VETERAN DEAD
Robert DRAKE Passes Away at a Ripe Old Age
Special to The Buffalo TIMES.
FRANKLINVILLE, Feb. 23. - The ranks of the G. A. R. are again thinned this week in
the death of Comrade Robert DRAKE, aged 87 years. Mr. DRAKE is the first to die in
his household. A wife and five children survive.
Mr. DRAKE was a resident of this village over 30 years, and a very estimable man. He was always totally deaf, as a result of service in the Civil War. He was otherwise unusually vigorous for a man of his age and only last year did the remarkable stunt of climbing to the ridge of a new residence in the course of construction near his home, and standing on the dizzy perch. He came from England to America when a young lad. The funeral will be held from the family residence on Cherry Street Saturday under the auspices of the G. A. R. and S. of V.
(Note: Robert William DRAKE served in New York's 17th Light Artillery "Orleans Battery", during the Civil War. The Orleans Battery was a volunteer battery raised in Orleans County, New York. He was born in Suffolk County, England and died in Franklinville, Cattaraugus Co, NY. Three of Robert William DRAKE and Mary Jane KING'S children were born in Orleans County, Ella Littictia DRAKE, James S. DRAKE, and Herbert Samuel DRAKE.)

Infant Killed In Crash
The sixth fatality from auto accidents within two weeks, and all occurring within a five mile section of highway on Route 31 between here and Albion, was reported Saturday evening following a head-on collision at 5:30 p. m. between nine members of the Arthur L. DRAPER, Sr., family of County House Rd. Albion RFD, in one car and an Orleans County Deputy Sheriff, Edwin A. BECHERER, 61, of Highland Ave., Medina, in another. The exact location of the crash was given as just west of the point where the Eagle Harbor Rd. intersects Route 31.
Killed instantly in the crash from a skull fracture was 10 months old Clifford Earl DRAPER, riding in the front seat with his father and mother, while seven of his brothers and sisters, together with the parents suffered various cuts and bruises. BECHERER was treated for injuries to the legs and hands. The infant's body was taken to the Merrill Funeral Home at 134 E. State St., where the Rev. B. Bailey HATHAWAY of Gaines will conduct services at 2 p m. Tuesday.
A report from the Sheriff's office yesterday revealed that DRAPER was being held on a charge of criminal negligence in connection with the accident. Investigators reported that the DRAPER car had been in the wrong lane at the time of the crash and that BECHERER was unable to get off the road to avoid the collision. Authorities said today that DRAPER would be held for the grand jury. Investigating the collision were Sheriff Carl KLEINDIENST, Under-sheriff Ray HUDSON, Deputy Roy VAGG, all of the Albion office; Sgt. Harry ADAMS and Trooper Francis PUMPHREY of the Gaines State Police Substation; Sgt. George WOODS of the Batavia BCI, and District Attorney Kenneth SERVE, of Medina. Coroner John ELLIS and Dr. James PARKE, both of Albion, attended the injured at Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital there.
Two members of the DRAPER family of 16 children were kept at the hospital Saturday night, and their conditions Sunday were reported as good. They were Stanley, 8, and Kenneth, 9. Others treated were Dorothy, 15; Glenn, 11; Charles, 7; Gloria, 5, and Patricia 4. The father suffered a head injury, and his wife, Marjorie, 43, face, leg and chest injuries.
Surviving the dead infant, in addition to his parents and the seven injured youngsters, are eight other brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ruth RIBBECK, Albion RFD, Mrs. Viola HADSTEAD of Waterport, Mrs. Ethel KIDNEY of Knowlesville, Mrs. Clara WHITE of Lima, Miss Rose DRAPER of Kent, William DRAPER of Oakfield, Arthur L. DRAPER, Jr., at home, and Marion DRAPER, 2, who lives with Mrs. RIBBECK.
At the time of the crash, BECHERER, was on his way to work at the Albion office, and the DRAPER family was returning home from a trip to visit Santa Claus in an Albion store, the Sheriff said.
On November 30, four members of two FULLER families, of Albion, were killed in a tragic crash with a trailer truck just a few feet from the spot where Saturday's accident occurred, and a 24-yr old Brockport youth, Lester C. GOOD, was killed early Friday morning just a short distance west of the spot, when his convertible coupe skidded off the road.

Eagle Harbor Couple Adopt Six Children of Motherless Family.
Six motherless children were made smiling and happy in Orleans
county Court Thursday, when the petition for their adoption by Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas DRAPER, prosperous farmers of Eagle Harbor, was signed by Judge
Gerald B. Fluhrer. The children's father, Robert HANNA, formerly of
Eagle Harbor, also appeared in court.
The mother of the children died a year ago, and the father, who is
hard working and industrious, and away from home much of the time, found it
next to impossible to keep the children in proper home surroundings.
It was his plan at first to give two of the children into the care of
Mr. and Mrs. DRAPER, who have no children of their own, and place the other
four in the homes of relatives, but the children's grief when told they were
to be separated was so great that it touched the kind hearts of Mr. and
Mrs. DRAPER, and they then and there decided to take the whole family.
The children are, Merle Thorton, l2 years; Roland Mann, 11;
Doris Barbara, 8; Frances Marion, 6; Robert James, 4; and Avis May,
2 years old. After the formalities were disposed of and Judge Fluhrer
signed the petition Mr. and Mrs. DRAPER, also smiling and happy,
departed with their interesting family who plainly showed their joy
at being allowed to remain together during their childhood years, and
delight in their new-found father and mother. They will reside in a
pleasant farm home in Eagle Harbor road, three miles west of Albion.
