Died - Suddenly, on the morning of Tuesday, the 19th inst. Mr. Elias Safford, of this village, in the 86th year of his age. Mr. Safford was a native of Massachusetts. He came to this State early in the present century, and was a citizen of Batavia previous to 1823, when he removed to Niagara county. Turner, in his History of the Holland Purchase, says: "In 1823, Elias Safford, Esq., moved from Batavia with his large family, and became the first settler upon the north side of the creek, in T. 13 (18?), R 5. Although his pioneer advent was at a late period, he encountered all the difficulties of a life in the wilderness. He persevered, and lives to enjoy the comforts of a fine farm, and to see the wild region he had the fortitude to enter as a pioneer, mostly settled and rapidly progressing in improvement. He has been not only the founder of settlement, but he has reared in his log cabin, on the banks of the Tonawanda, an excellent family, that have gone out into the world, richly endowed with paternal precepts and examples.”
Mr. SAFFORD removed to this village a few years since, that he might enjoy the society of some of his children residing here, and during his residence with us has been highly respected as a neighbor and a citizen. His loss is felt by all who knew him. On Monday evening last he retired in his usual health; shortly after which he seemed to manifest a difficulty in breathing, which he assured his anxious companion was nothing serious, that she should have no solicitude for him as he soon would be relieved. Not satisfied, however, she arose and obtained assistance. In a few minutes, without a struggle or a groan, he passed from earth as in a pleasant sleep. His last words were, “I am at peace with Heaven and earth.” Thus terminated the life of a useful and highly respected citizen. His aged companion, who had enjoyed his society and counsels for a period of over 60 years, and a large circle of relatives and friends are left to mourn his sudden death. His funeral was attended today at 10-1/2 o’clock, at the Presbyterian Church.

Died at her residence in Hanover township, Mich., Friday, Febraury 11, 1898, Mrs. Electa, relief of the late Wm. SANDERSON. Her maiden name was BENTLEY. She was born in Shelby, Orleans county, N.Y., June 24, 1814. Her marriage occurred in March, 1837.
Early in the forties the family came into Lenawee county, Mich. In 1844 they purchased and improved a farm in Somerset, Hillsdale county, which was the family home for more than twenty years. In 1865, they removed to Hanover, locating on the farm which has since been known as the Sanderson homstead. Father SANDERSON deceased February 6, 1893, aged 83 years.
Mrs. SANDERSON belonged to an old and highly respected Central New York family; but one member of her father’s family survives her, a brother residing in Buffalo, N.Y. She was a beautiful character, kind, companionable, appreciative and generous. Her natural genial and winning manner was richly toned by her intelligent and satisfactory religious experiences; although deprived of the opportunities of public religious worship, yet her daily devotions kept her heart warm and rendered the influence of her religious character potential for good in her home and community. She connected herself with the Baptist church in the east, and came a well accredited member thereof, to her western home. Mrs. SANDERSON brought to her pioneer home her culture, piety and noble womanhood. Heroically and courageously she met the toil and privation incident to a new country. She was the willing sharer of her husband’s labors and anxieties, which she ever sought to lighten. Her neighbors soon learned her eminent qualities, and many a sorrowing heart and afflicted mother was cheered, comforted and encouraged by Mother SANDERSON’s generous womanly love and assistance.
A precious little girl, the daughter of a former wife of Mr. SANDERSON, was the object of her tender solicitude, and was carefully cultured in the graces and virtues of noble womanhood. Mother SANDERSON leaves two sons, Edwin and William Sanderson , both residents of Hanover. She reached the ripe age of more than four score years and for a long time has necessarily been retired, quietly reposing in the affection and care of her devoted children. She will be missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, by whom her memory will ever be revered.
Her funeral services were held at the Day school house, conducted by Rev. G.W. Tuthill; Mr. and Mrs. A. Bibbins, of Albion, with Eldridge Heath and Miss Olive Chapman ably rendered appropriate music. Her remains repose in the cemetery of Hanover village.

Two Five Year Old Girls Drown While Playing On Canal
Albion - Two 5-year-old girls drowned in the Barge Canal yesterday afternoon when thin ice on which they were playing broke under one and the other apparently went to her rescue and also lost her life. The girls were Sally YASKULSKI, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry YASKULSKI, 439 E. State Street and Naomi SANFORD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter SANFORD, 447 E. State Street.
The canal scene of the tragedy is at the rear of the girls homes. The bodies were recovered by the emergency squad of the Albion Fire Department within four hours after the girls were reported missing at 3 p.m. The body of the SANFORD girl was removed about 6:30 o'clock and that of the other girl a half-hour later, about 25 feet from the hole in the ice where the children presumed to have fallen in. The bodies were floating under the thin ice.
The families notified the Albion police about 3 p.m. that the little girls were missing from play in their yards. Upon investigation, Police Sgt. Joseph ZWIEFKA found footprints on the two leading from the bank to a hole in the ice and another set of prints returning to the shore and then going back to the hole in the ice. Mrs. Patience SCARLETT left this life on Monday evening, March 31st, at the family home on Lee street. She had been a great but patient sufferer for months and had been confined to her bed since the New Year. She is survived by her husband, William SCARLETT, and and six children: Edward NARBURG and Mrs. William DAWSON, of West Barre, Walter SCARLETT, of Medina, Charles, who is serving with the U. S. Navy with headquarters at Boston, William and Gladys at borne.
She was born in England fifty-seven years ago, and with her family came to this country ten years ago. About two years later they bought the place which she made home and many friends. She had recently, with her husband, given her name to the West Barre church, but had been a Christian since girlhood, and a member of the church in England. She went gladly to her heavenly home to the place prepared by her Saviour, though friends here were very dear to her. The remains were laid to rest in the Pendry Cemetery (Union Cemetery) by the side of the little grand-daughter who had preceded her by two years. One more tie binds to the other world.
Rest at last, poor tired spirit,
Can we mourn, who loved thee well,
Safely reached that blissful heaven.
Though it's hard to say farewell.
Sweet the sleep you so much needed,
Free from suffering, care and pain
Looking on thy face so peaceful,
Could we wish thee back again?

After dragging the canal at Main street in Albion all day Monday and up to about noon Tuesday, the body of Burt SERVOSS, the 21 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Burt SERVOSS of Highland avenue, was brought to the surface by Larry Gleason and other searchers of Medina. The young man had been missing since Saturday night and when found was clothed in an undershirt and a pair of pants.
The boy's grandfather and grandmother are the steward and stewardess on the State boat of the Barge canal and because of this his parents permitted him to take an appointment on the same boat, knowing that he would be cared for. Saturday nights the employees sometimes return to their homes and at other times remain on the boat. Young SERVOSS not being on the boat Sunday, it was thought he was at his home, and at his home it was believed he was at the boat. The boat started out Monday morning, thinking he was at Medina and would overtake them at their next stop, but his grandmother, Mrs. GRAY, found all of his clothing except the articles which were found on the body. At once the boat returned to where it had been anchored over Sunday and search was instituted with the above results.
Besides his parents, the young man is survived by one sister, Miss Vernita SERVOSS. The funeral took place from the family home yesterday afternoon, Rev. F. J. Milman officiating. The interment was in Boxwood Cemetery.

Another of Orleans’ pioneers passed away Monday evening in the death of Miss Sarah SERVOSS at her home west of Medina, at the age of 85 years. In Miss SERVOSS’ death the community loses one of the most estimable women of the county, and one whose entire life has been one of kindly deeds.
She was born in the house in which she died and which was her home for more than half a century. Her father, the late Christopher SERVOSS, came to this vicinity at the time of the construction of the original Erie canal and in 1820 erected a log cabin on the site where the homestead now stands. He lived the life of a pioneer in the strictest sense, not only hewing the logs for his home but in the tilling of the soil and the raising of his family.
Miss SERVOSS, the eldest, became identified with church work at an early age and through her long life gave liberally in support of many religious and charitable movements. She enjoyed the reputation of being the best speller in the county, and in her early days, so famed had her achievement become that when spelling bees were a common and usual amusement she was barred from participation. Of late years she had lived a retired life but had been well and favorably known for her benefactions to worthy causes.
She leaves three nephews, Burt T. SERVOSS, of Rochester, Harry H. SERVOSS, of Medina, and Floyd L. SERVOSS of Shelby Basin; and one niece, Mrs. Jessie STEARNS, of Elgin, Ill. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2: 30 o’clock from her late home in Shelby Basin. Rev. E. M Snodgrass, of the Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. The bearers will be Albert Tanger, Henry Newman, John LeValley, Cephas Yaxley, Benjamin Farrow and Aaron Brackenbury.
The funeral of late Miss Sarah SERVOSS was held Thursday afternoon at her late home west of this village, the Rev. E. M. Snodgrass officiating, and was largely attended. The deceased was one of the pioneer residents of this section.

Many old time friends will revere the memory of a genial upright man who has passed away. The funeral occurred in Buffalo Saturday afternoon; the interment in Boxwood Cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. A Harris officiating.

Also 24 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He also leaves three step-brothers, Edward SUCHARSKI, and Joseph SUCHARSKI of Buffalo and Leo SUCHARSKI in Pennsylvania, as well as one step-sister, Mrs. Jessie BOWMAN, and several nieces and nephews.

What has every appearance of having been a deliberate murder Sunday in the central part of the village of Albion, is engrossing the attention of county and village authorities. James SGIORTINO, 30 years of age, who has been in this country about fifteen months, and who had a wife and child in Italy, was found dead with three bullets in his body at the New York Central station at 12:30 o’clock (p.m.). The discovery was made by some boys who told the police
The present theory of the officials was that an attempt was made to rob Sgiortino and that failing in this the highwaymen shot him and becoming immediately frightened made their escape. SGIORTINO was a good workman, sober and industrious and well spoken of. So far as is known he did not have an enemy in this vicinity. No arrests have been made.
