Mrs. Elnora SMEAD, widow of the late Daniel SMEAD, passed away suddenly at an early hour Sunday morning, July 10, at her home on Geddes Street. She had been in poor health for some time and Friday evening suffered from a severe heart attack, but felt much better on Saturday. When her neighbor Mrs. William O'Mara called Sunday morning to enquire how she was feeling it was discovered that she had passed quietly away in her sleep, her death having evidently occurred several hours before without the knowledge of others sleeping in the house.
Mrs. SMEAD was born May 21, 1863, at Geneseo, New York, but had lived in this vicinity for many years. She is survived by two sons, Floyd L. HUGHES of New Lebanon, N.Y., and Clark E. HUGHES of this village, and six grandchildren, John, Daniel, Aldene, Clark, Gordon and Dorothy HUGHES, all of Holley. She also leaves three brothers, Morris HAIGHT of Batavia, George HAIGHT of Clarkson and Francis HAIGHT of Albion.
A prayer service was conducted by Rev. W. C. Taylor of Albion Tuesday afternoon at her late home, followed by funeral services at the Methodist church, Rev. D. O. Chamberlayne officiating and interment was made in Hillside Cemetery.
Mrs. SMEAD was a devoted mother and a kind neighbor, and will be greatly missed by her family and a wide circle of friends.

Laura E. SMITH was born in Niagara County, New York, February 4, 1861, and died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Grace (Delia, in ink, at side) CALLARD, near Albion, New York, December 25 (27, correct date) 1920.
She leaves to mourn their loss two brothers, Oba and Daniel SMITH, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie ANNIS and Mrs. Grace (Thomas, in ink, at side) CALLARD, all of Albion.
Sister SMITH was converted to Christ early in life and lived a devoted Christian until the day of her death. She was both a lover and student of the Word of God. Not only by profession, but also by practice, was she a 'Bible Christian'. She had been a faithful and beloved member of the Albion Free Methodist Church for more than thirty years. Sister SMITH leaves behind the fragrance of a godly life as her most valuable bequest to the church and people of her choice, as well as to relatives and friends.
For several years she had been the faithful attendant and companion of Sister Nellie GRINNELL, who is an invalid of long standing, by whom she is greatly missed. Sister Smith had been in declining health for some time, caused by a goiter affection. Upon consulting a specialist it was discovered that a cancerous growth had formed in the throat at such a point as to prevent an operation. This double ailment caused the patient much painful suffering, which she bore with true Christian patience and grace. She could take but little nourishment, and that with more or less suffering. She had expressed her preference to go to her heavenly home. The end came suddenly and unexpectedly.

During the past few days the death messenger has entered several of the family circles in our village, and seldom has there been in one week so many homes in Medina where there was sorrow and mourning over the loss of loved ones.
Monday morning the friends of William M. SMITH were shocked by the sad news of his death, which occurred suddenly about 7:30, at his home, 21 Oxford Street, Rochester. Until within a week previous the deceased had been in his usual health, which was comparatively good. He was at his place of business on Saturday, and was preparing to go to the store as usual on the day of his death. The cause of his death was neuralgia of the heart, and he expired without being able to utter a word, more than to call his wife.
Mr. SMITH was about fifty years old, and had been in business in Medina ever since attaining his majority, until about a year ago, when he went to Rochester and engaged in the grocery business on East Main Street. He was highly esteemed by a wide circle of acquaintances, was successful and popular as a business man; an indulgent and kind husband and father, his demise will cause a void that can never be filled. Deceased was the son of the late Silas SMITH, of Medina, and besides a wife (daughter of Albert FRARY, of this place), and six children, he leaves his mother, a sister and two brothers to mourn his loss.
The funeral services, which were largely attended, were held at the M. E. Church in Medina, (of which deceased was a member), at two P. M. yesterday, Rev. Dr. Benham, of the Asbury M. E. Church, Rochester, officiating, assisted by Rev. Mr. Dryer. The burial took place at Boxwood Cemetery, with Masonic ceremonies.

He, with his companion who survives him and has been his helper and sharer of his joys and sorrows, moved into this county over one-half century ago, and have lived to bring up four children, one son and three daughters, who have watched over him in these years of affliction as but few children do in this day. Albion, July 24. - The remains of Miss Lillian A. SOUTHWORTH, the 15 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. SOUTHWORTH, of No. 389 Park Place, Brooklyn, were brought to Albion last night on the midnight train from Prattsville, where she was drowned while spending her vacation in the Catskill mountains.
Miss SOUTHWORTH was in bathing with several companions, and being a good swimmer, fearlessly dived into a pool of water about forty feet deep. She was taken with cramps and before aid could reach her she had sunk and the body was not recovered for over three hours, although a young lady companion who was near her nearly met a similar fate in trying to rescue her.
Miss SOUTHWORTH was born in Holley, in February, 1895, and her parents are both former residents of that village. The funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George REYNELL, at No. 39 West Bank Street, this village, Rev. Darwin F. Two Three-Year-Old Boys Drown In Canal When They Break Through Ice.
Albion - Two three - year-old boys were drowned yesterday afternoon when they broke
through the ice on the Barge Canal, a short distance from their homes.
They are Robert URKEW, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell URKEW, East Bank Street, who would have been four years old on February 27; and Paul SPADA, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elio SPADA, also of East Bank Street.
The body of the URKEW boy was recovered after an hour's dragging by the emergency squad of the Albion Fire Department, at 9:15 p.m., and the other body was located shortly after 1 o'clock this morning. Police were called into the search at about 5 p.m. after the tots had been reported missing for nearly an hour. Mrs. SPADA said she last had seen her son at 4 p.m. and Mrs. URKEW last had seen Bobby at around 2:30 p.m.
Each mother had thought her son was at the other boy's house, the two homes being less than half a block apart. Following a report that the children had been seen near the New York Central Railroad tracks at 5 p.m. police and emergency squad members centered their search in the railroad area and adjoining streets, using a loud speaking system to ask residents for news of the pair.
The search shifted to the canal area shortly before 8 p.m. when a hole was discovered in a section of ice along the south bank of the canal, just east of the Birdseye-Snider plant's pumping station. The ice extended out from the bank about 15 to 20 feet at the point and the hole was about 6 to 8 feet from the bank. Scratches made by a stick on the ice indicated the boys had been playing on the ice before one or both fell through.
The URKEW boy's body was recovered at a point 8 or 10 feet from the hole after the ice had been broken up and had floated away. Several hundred spectators lined the canal bank to watch the dragging operation after an emergency alarm was sounded at 8 p.m. The URKEW boy's body was recovered by Clayton Scharping, Jr. who was working in a boat with Sol Stewart and Paul Smith. In another boat were Edwin Weeks, Donald Miles, Homer Babcock and Lewis Grimes. They were relieved later by Frank Daniels, Joseph Bloom and others. The tragedy occurred less than a block away from a point where two young girls were drowned on Dec. 13, 1945. At that time Sally YASKULSKI, 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry YASKULSKI (HELEN M. nee RAFFALKO), and Naomi SANFORD, 5, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter SANFORD, fell through the Ice.
Mr. and Mrs. URKEW have another son, James, 7. They have lived at the East Bank Street address for about 18 months. The father is employed in produce work by Gerald Lynch, Albion. Mrs. URKEW is the former Catherine Bell of Albion.
Mrs. SPADA was an English war bride who married her husband while he was stationed overseas during the war. She and Paul joined her husband here on March 1, 1945, when the baby was only 5 months old. The SPADAS have a daughter, Jacqueline, 18 months, and another son, Ronald, 3 months. Mrs. SPADA is the former Thelma SHAW of Newmarket, England. Her husband is employed at the Delco Appliance Division plant in Rochester.
Funeral services for the SPADA boy will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the Merrill Funeral Home, and at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's Church, with burial in. Funeral services for the other child have not been completed.

The sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. Anna COOK, wife of our highly esteemed townsman, Luther J. SPENCER, was a shock to the entire community. A week ago last Saturday she returned from a visit of a week to her son Frank of Olean, Cattaraugus, NY. The following night she was taken violently ill and a physician being called found that a pronounced case of pleurisy with other complications had become seated and in spite of the best medical skill and the best of care, she gradually grew worse till death came to her relief on Saturday morning last. Nov. 2nd, 1901, aged 59 years.
She was born in Lincolnshire, Eng., Nov. 19, 1842, and when nine years of age she came with her parents to this country, settling in Barre, Olean’s county (1851). On December 22, 1863 she became the wife of Luther J. SPENCER, with whom thirty-eight years of the most happy wedded life had been spent.
Twenty-nine year ago she came with her family to Warsaw where the rest of her life was lived. When 14 years of age she became happily converted and joined the Free Methodist church at Albion, NY, and when coming to Warsaw she united with the M. E. church of this place, ever adorning her profession by a most exemplary and Godly life. Her funeral was held from the Congregational Church on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. and a large concourse of surviving friends, who expressed their high esteem and sympathy in the beautiful floral tributes, which were beautiful and numerous.
The Woman’s Relief Corps, the G. A. R. Post and her Bible Class all attended in separate bodies, each being seated by themselves. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. J. Walbion, assisted by Rev. H. E. Guerney of the Congregational Church. There are left to mourn her loss, Frank of Olean, N.Y. and William of Warsaw, and three grandsons, Lee SPENCER - who is as one of the family, having been in the home of his grandparents since he was three days old at which time his mother died - Floyd and Claude SPENCER of Olean, one granddaughter, Anna SPENCER of Olean, NY: also two brothers, James COOK of Murray, N.Y. and Robert COOK of Warsaw, N.Y. She rest in peace in the Warsaw Cemetery awaiting the resurrection morn.

THE SILENT REAPER
After a long and painful illness of many weeks the strong frame upon which so many had
leaned for support succumbed to the inroads of disease, and she passed away in the
forenoon of January 24th, 1899, in the fifty-ninth year of her age. She was one of a large
family of children that blessed the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Philo F. PROSSER in
the town of Kendall, and where she lived to early womanhood. She was educated at the
Brockport Normal School and the Albion Academy, but was a learner to the end. While here
pursuing her studies she became acquainted with Seth S. SPENCER, a rising attorney, to
whom she was married in 1863. It proved a very happy union, the thirty-six years passing
until they became a beautiful dream with little to mar its uniform rythm(sic). One child,
a son, came into the happy home--Harry Prosser SPENCER, the present clerk of Orleans
county.
Mrs. SPENCER was a woman blessed with generous endowments of which large and efficient use was made. An independent thinker, with the courage of her convictions, her mind was hospitable to all ideas that promised the advancement of the human race. So she naturally became a liberal in religion, a strong advocate of temperance and woman suffrage, and prominent in local charities. She was a born leader, with rare executive ability; and in recognition of these qualities was frequently called to positions of trust. For a time she was an officer in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and president of the County Equal Suffrage Association, her commanding form being frequently seen in their conventions. When it was proposed to raise a guarantee fund to secure the gift of the Pullman Memorial Universalist church, she became a leading spirit in that undertaking, her interest in the movement never waning, she being for years the efficient secretary, and at her death president of the Ladies Aid Society.
Yet withal no household duty was neglected, but the well ordered home was still the centre of her life where she dispensed a hearty hospitality and by her intelligence, humor and tact became the most attractive of entertainers.
It was a very useful life which was ended--if such a life is ever ended here--when her spirit passed into its larger sphere of activity. Besides a mourning husband and son she leaves a brother, Wellington PROSSER of Olean, and a sister, Mrs. Alfred BASSETT, of Kendall. A large number of deeply sympathetic friends gathered with the relatives to pay a loving tribute to her worth on Thursday January 26th, when, after the solemn service, the mortal part was borne to Mt. Albion Cemetery.
And somewhere yet in the hill-tops
of the country that hath no pain.,br> She will watch in her beautiful doorway
To bid us welcome again."

One of Albion's Oldest Attorneys and Most Respected Citizens, Died at His Home on West Academy Street Wednesday Night of Last Week. Funeral held at the House Friday Afternoon--Largely Attended.
Seth S. SPENCER, one of the oldest and most highly respected lawyers of the county of Orleans, died at his residence on West Academy street, in the village of Albion, Wednesday, Aug. 16th, aged 74 years, 10 months and 6 days.
Mr. SPENCER was born at Riches Corners, town of Barre (now Albion), Orleans county, NY, Oct. 10th 1830. He received a common school education and later attended the old Albion Academy, from which institution he was a graduate. Like a majority of old time lawyers, he taught school for several years before commencing the study of law, and was the town superintendent of schools for the town of Barre, in the year 1852. During that year he commenced the study of law in the office of the late Judge McAllister and finished his studies in the office of Church & Davis. He was admitted to the bar in September, 1856, and immediately formed a partnership with the late Edwin Porter. In 1872 he dissolved this connection and became a member of the firm of Holmes, Thompson & Spencer. This partnership was dissolved in 1874 by the death of Mr. Holmes, and was succeeded by the firm of Thompson & Spencer, consisting of himself and the late Irving M. Thompson. This partnership continued for nearly a quarter of a century. Mr. Spencer retired from the firm in 1896, and practiced law by himself up to within a short time before his death.
Mr. SPENCER held many responsible public positions during his career, having for two years been a clerk in the Canal Collection Office at Albion, under Dr. Orson Nicholson, the clerk of the Orleans County Board of Supervisors, for thirteen consecutive years, a justice of the peace of the town of Barre from 1863-1876, a member and clerk of the board of education of the Albion Union School for several years, and postmaster of the village of Albion for four and one-half years, under President Harrison. In the latter years of his life he was the clerk of the commissioners of Mount Albion cemetery.
Although in recent years his failing health had confined him more or less closely to his home, up to the time of his retirement from the active practice of his chosen profession, Mr. SPENCER was a man whose intellectual qualifications and legal attainments commanded the respect not only of a large circle of clients, but of the bench and bar of Orleans county as well.
In disposition he was kindly and genial. As a man and a lawyer he was scrupulously honest and upright; as a husband, father and friend he was loyal, just and generous. With a modesty that prompted him to underestimate his own naturally large abilities, he shunned the more spectacular part of his profession, and left the trial of cases to others; but as a methodical, painstaking, careful preparer of cases, as a draftsman of legal papers, as an advisor in matters which involved the adjustment and settlement of accounts and business matters generally, he was the peer of any lawyer in the county of Orleans.
A Republican in politics, he took an active interest in public affairs, and was entrusted by his fellow citizens with many responsible public positions, the chief of which was the postmastership at Albion under President Harrison. Mr. SPENCER was a member of the Universalist church and was largely instrumental in securing the incorporation of the Pullman Memorial church, of which he was for several years one of the board of trustees.
The funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 18th, at his late residence, Rev. Dr. Coddington of Rochester officiating. The bearers were Hon. Isaac S. Signor, Gurdon W. Fitch, Sanford T. Church, Thomas A. Kirby, Warner Thompson and Frederick M. Thompson. The interment was at Mt. Albion Cemetery. Mr. SPENCER is survived by one son, ex-County Clerk Harry P. SPENCER, of this village. His wife, Ellen PROSSER SPENCER, whom he married in 1861, predeceased him in 1899.
At a special meeting of the Orleans County Bar Association, held at the surrogate's office on Friday afternoon, Stanley E. Filkins of Medina was elected chairman, Herbert T. Reed secretary and the following resolutions were adopted: "The Bar of Orleans county is again assembled to attend the funeral services of one of its oldest and most respected members. Seth S. SPENCER for forty-nine years a member of this bar, and one of the old guard, has laid down the duties and burdens of life and passed over to join The Great Majority."
During the time that Mr. SPENCER was actively engaged in the practice of the law, there is no record of any act professionally or as a member of this community, that does not reflec credit on his name. A good lawyer, a pleasant, affable gentleman, a loyal friend, a worthy citizen. He has performed every duty with fidelity. He has filled positions of a public trust with honor. DEATH REMOVES SETH S. SPENCER
Old and Well Known Attorney of Albion
SERVED AS POSTMASTER,br> Mr. Spencer Began the Practice of Law in Albion in 1856--Clerk of
Board of Supervisors for Twelve Years--Highly Regarded Albion, Aug. 17.--The death of Seth
S. Spencer, an old and highly esteemed lawyer, occurred last night at his home on West
Academy street. He was taken ill in his office about a week ago, and continued to fail
until death came.
Mr. Spencer came to Albion from the town of Barre in the spring of 1852, at the age of 21 years, to study law. He entered the office of William R. McAllister for a time, completing his course of study in the office of the late Hon. Sanford Church and the late Hon. Noah Davis. He was admitted to practice in the fall of 1856, and was with Edwin Porter until 1862. He was then elected to the office of justice of the peace, and acted in that capacity until December, 1857. While thus officiating he formed a partnership with the late Holmes & Thompson. Upon the death of Mr. Holmes the firm name became Thompson & Spencer, and for many years was a prosperous connection. When Mr. Thompson's sons entered the firm he retired and opened an office in the same block. For twelve years he was a clerk of the Board of County Supervisors, and was appointed postmaster under President Harrison.
Mr. Spencer was for many years identified with the interests of Albion and was highly regarded. He leaves one son, Harry T. Spencer, with whose family he resided at the Spencer homestead.
(Note: His son was Harry Prosser Spencer. In the above article, it states his middle initial is "T", which is not correct.)

Yesterday afternoon occurred the death of Mrs. Hannah RATCLIFFE SPENSELEY at her home on Prospect avenue, at the advanced age of ninety years. Mrs. SPENSELEY was born in England in 1820, and soon after her marriage to John RATCLIFFE came to this country. Their first child was taken ill while coming across the water and was buried at sea. As soon as they landed in New York they went through to Batavia, and drove across to Medina, where her brothers, Charles and John BLAND lived. The present railroad was not constructed at that time (1850) nor was the canal open for navigation.
Mr. RATCLIFFE died in 1861, and in 1869 she married George SPENSELEY. They removed from Medina to Shelby Basin and resided there for about two years, when Mr. SPENSELEY died. She came back to Medina and has resided here ever since, in the house where she died, for the past thirty-five years. She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Mary RATCLIFFE, of this place.
The deceased was one of the oldest residents of the village, and during its earlier history, prominent in its affairs. She was a Baptist all her life and worked zealously for the church until the feebleness of old age prevented. Always a conscientious charitable lady, she gave much service and aid to all worthy undertakings, and her demise will be mourned by a large circle of acquaintances.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon, at two-thirty, the Rev. Thomas de Gruchy officiating.

Well Known Medina Merchant Takes His Life While Suffering from Mental Aberration.
George E. SPOONER, the well-known drygoods merchant of Medina, was found dead in his room
this morning. He had been troubled with insomnia for eight or ten days past until his mind
had reached such a state that his wife and brother-in-law had become alarmed as to his
condition and were closely watching him last week; and was urged to get a nurse and leave
business alone for a while. This he refused. He became better the last of last week and it
was supposed he was getting along alright, although his mental aberration was noticed.
Last night again he could not sleep, and after taking medicine to induce sleep, he told his wife (Margaret RYAN) he would go to the upstairs bed room as he thought he could sleep best by himself. As everything was quiet there, she thought he was resting alright till morning.
This morning she went to his room and found he had committed suicide during the night. Mr. RYAN, his brother-in-law, was called, and he called Coroner Munson. They found that sometime during the night, he had hung himself by a rope to the top of his bedroom door, and was found dead in this position. There can be no possible explanation except his losing his mind by reason of failing eyesight and insomnia, which unbalanced his mind.
In the death of Mr. SPOONER, Medina loses a business man who had for about twenty-five years held the confidence of the business world as well as one who at all times was to be trusted for fair dealing with his customers. The announcement of his death to the citizens of this village this morning was a surprise beyond expression by words and the sorrow felt in all quarters is manifest in the small gatherings trying to give some reason for the act, as few knew of his sickness.
His wife and father (John SPOONER) have the sympathy of all. Funeral services will be held from his late home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
