MSGR. FRANCIS SULLIVAN PASSES, LONG ACTIVE IN ALBION, FUNERAL THIS MORNING.
The somber tolling of the bell in St. Joseph's church shortly after six o'clock Monday evening signaled to all within hearing range the passing of 92-year-old Monsignor Francis SULLIVAN in Mercy Hospital, Buffalo. He had made his home there since March of last year, the year after his retirement from almost half a century as pastor of St. Joseph's church here. All stores in downtown Albion are closed this morning for the funeral service, a Solemn Pontifical High Requiem Mass by Bishop John J. O'Hara of the Buffalo diocese. A nephew of Father SULLIVAN, the very Rev. James T. SULLIVAN of East Aurora will be Deacon at the service, and Rev. Felix McCabe, D.D. who succeeded to the pastorate here in January 1946, will be Sub-Deacon. Schools are also closed in recognition of his 18 years of service on the Albion Board of Education.
Death cut short by two days the 65th year since Monsignor SULLIVAN was ordained as a priest at Niagara University. Wednesday would also have marked the 51st anniversary of his coming to the Albion parish and the 19th anniversary of his investiture as a Monsignor or Prince of the Church.
Born Dec. 13th, 1855 in Hartland, Niagara County, about 15 miles from Albion, he had served as some months after his ordination as an assistant pastor at Ellicottville and then was assigned to the Perry-Silver Springs parish. On the 14th anniversary of donning the robes of priesthood, he was sent the Albion to succeed the Rev. John Beiden, who had in the previous year superintended the building of the new church edifice on West Park Street. Father Sullivan's job was to get enough money out of the congregation to pay the church debt. He not only did this but he added the school and the Lyceum property, a home for use as a convent for the nuns, and a house for the janitor. Within less than 20 years he had freed the church of debt and in 1923 had opened the new cemetery on East Avenue, the chapel of which, was dedicated by Bishop William Turner on Memorial Day in 1923. St. Joseph's is one of only three or four parishes in the Buffalo diocese which are free from debt.
The body of Monsignor SULLIVAN who prefer to be called 'Father' SULLIVAN, was brought here Tuesday to St. Joseph's Rectory. At 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon it was taken to St. Joseph's church to lie in state until the funeral this morning. Bearers in the procession were Daniel Hanley Jr., William Monacelli, Pasquale DiLaura, W. Murray Daily, Edward Coffey, Dominic Albanese, James T. Lonergan and Charles Crowley. A large delegation of clergy were on hand for the recitation of the Office for the Dead at 4 o'clock and remained for the funeral service this morning. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in a handsome mausoleum in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, selected by him a number of years ago.

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Mr. Isaac W. SWAN, formerly a resident of this village, but who has during the last three years, resided at Elgin, Ill. He died on Friday, August 15th, after a wearing illness of about two weeks. Mr. SWAN was an old citizen of this place and made Medina his home for many years. At one time he conducted the largest business, and was at the head of the most extensive house ever in Medina, and was justly regarded as one of the best of businessmen. He was possessed of a fund of genial manner and of social qualities, which rendered him an interesting associate and it will be a long time before he will be forgotten by our citizens. He was a kind husband and an indulgent father. We know that our entire community most deeply sympathize with his family in this their sad bereavement. 'We wrapt her in her snow-white shroud,
And crossed with sadly tender care,
Her little hands upon her breast,
and smoothed her sunny hair,
We kissed her check, and kissed her brow,
And if aright we read the smile,
That lingered on the dear one’s lips,
It told of heaven the while.'

On Saturday morning at 11 o'clock Albert L. SWETT, one of Medina's foremost citizens passed away at his home on West Center Street, as the result of an automobile accident near Middleport last fall.
Among the pioneers of Western New York from the New England states were the parents of Albert L. SWETT. His father was Joel R. and his mother Minerva F. (BATES) SWETT, and they settled in Orleans county, town of Ridgeway, in the year 1825. Here Mr. SWETT was born April 27, 1850. In 1856 his parents removed to Champaign, ILL. Mr. SWETT had the advantage of common school attendance in the winters, working on the farm summers. When the Civil War broke out his father and his older brother, Joel B. SWETT enlisted in the army, leaving the mother and four children at home to carry on the farm work. Albert L. was the eldest of the four and he was only eleven. At the close of the war, when Albert was fifteen years of age the family returned to Medina. His first occupation was that of a grocery clerk, remaining two years in this position, and then taking a course in the Medina Academy under Professor Charles Fairman. Following this he entered the employ of the Bignall Manufacturing Company, beginning as a helper. He studied the business and the interests of his employers and soon received promotion as order and shipping clerk This position he filled seven years, during which period he had by economy saved about $1,200. With this modest capital and ample determination and experience he associated himself with W. H. Samson, organizing under the firm style of the Medina Manufacturing Company, for the purpose of manufacturing hardware specialties. At the end of seven years they purchased land on the north side of Medina, on Oak Orchard creek, erected a dam which supplied good water power, and built one of the finest manufacturing plants in the state. In 1889 Mr. Swett bought the entire interest in the business and has conducted the same since. The plant regularly gives employment to over 300 men.
Directs Power Company. The A. L. Swett Electric Light & Power Company, which was later changed to the Western New York Utilities Company, and the interests of which Mr. SWETT has disposed of within the past year furnishes not only light and power for Medina, but surrounding towns, including Middleport, Lyndonville, Shelby, Waterport and many others. This dam and the power which generates therefrom has been the upbuilding of Medina, all the keen foresight, tireless energy and abundance of resource of Albert L. Swett. In 1920 he began the construction of this immense dam which spans the creek bed from bank to bank, a distance of 600 feet. West of this main dam extends a dike 1,600 feet long, making a total length of 2,200 feet. An inland lake, one and on-half (one-half) mile long and nearly fifty feet deep having a surface of over 150 acres, is formed by this dam and dike.
Mr. SWETT was married in 1872 to Lucinda M. FULLER, and they have two children, Charles S. and Raymond F. both of this place. Besides his widow and two sons he is survived by one sister, Dr. Emily F. SWETT, of this place, and Rev. Lyman SWETT, of Boston, Mass. Mr. SWETT was a member of the First Baptist Church of this place, a most loyal supporter of the Boy's Community Work, Medina Hospital, having contributed $10,000 to the new building fund, and the foreign missions, particularly those of India.
The funeral was held from his late home on Tuesday afternoon, at 3 o'clock and was very largely attended. Rev. M. E. VanNostrand of Albany a former pastor of the Baptist Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. J. J. Allen. The remains were placed in the vault at Boxwood cemetery and will later be buried in the family plot. The honory (honorary) bearers were: General J. S. Thompson, Mayor C. H. Pettis, Watson F. Barry, W. L. Bennett, G. A. Newell and A. G. Phillips. The bearers were G. A. Bowen, Erwin Rands, R. H. Newell, Albert Broughton, Glenn Ide and B. Edward Slack. Among those from out of town attending were: William A. Rogers, President and Founder of the Rogers Brown Co., and Mr. Shephard of Buffalo, Mrs. J. C Foley and Miss Royce of Brooklyn; Rev. and Mrs. Lyman SWETT of Boston; Mr and Mrs. E. F. Hersey, of Hingham, Mass; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Thorpe, Mrs. J B. SWETT, Mrs. A. M. JOEL RICHARDS SWETT - Was born in Northfield, Mass., January 19th., 1808. His early boyhood was spent in New England until he was fourteen years of age, when his father, Dr. Jonathan SWETT, moved with his family to New York state, as one of the pioneers of Orleans county. He was married October 2nd, 1836, to Minerva P. BATES, who has shared the experiences of his life, his joys and sorrows until the time of his death.
In 1856 he moved to Illinois, and while a resident there responded to his country's call, and entered the federal army in the war of the rebellion. He served in the army thirteen months, the last month as a prisoner in Libby prison. Exchanged and discharged for disability, he returned to his family, and in 1866 again came to Medina where he has remained a resident until his decease.
In the winter of 1879, while returning home from the G. A. R.. annual camp-fire, he slipped on an icy pavement and sustained a fracture of the hip which disabled him for all his future life. The sufferings from this accident were constant and intense, but were always borne with uncomplaining fortitude. In early boyhood he united with the Baptist church, and during that church's earliest struggles in Medina he was one of its active members and burden-bearers.
On Sunday morning, Sept. 28th he received his discharge from life's warfare and quietly went to sleep. He leaves to miss and to mourn him a wife, three sons and three daughters - Joel B. SWETT, Albert L. SWETT, Rev. Lyman R. SWETT, Mrs. E. LOKE, Dr. Emily F. SWETT and Lena A. SWETT.
