Zebulon BARNUM, 5G Grandfather. Born on 19 Dec 1773 in Danbury, CT [Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT]. Zebulon died in Carlton Twp., Barry Co, MI on 28 Nov 1848; he was 74. Buried in Fuller Cem., Carlton Twp., Barry Co, MI. Occupation: Farmer. He was born in Danbury, CT; in 1804 lived in Hartland, NY; 1817 Carlton, Orleans Co, NY; 1835, Barry Co, MI. He named the town of Carlton Center in Barry County, Michigan, after his homeland, Carlton, Orleans County, NY The book, "History of Orleans County, New York" on pg 162 contains the following--...was a carding machine in Kenyonville at the early day, and Zebulon Barnum, one of those universal geniuses who were better appreciated years ago than now, erected a shop table a mile southwest of Kuckville, where he manufactured wooden plows for the farmers and carried on the tailoring and blacksmithing businesses." Medical: He was 74 years, 11 months, 17 days old when he died Research: "A History of the Old Town of Stratford ... & Bridgeport, CT" by Rev. Samuel Orcutt Zebulon Barnum was on the Assessment Roll of Real & Personal Estates of Hartland, Niagara Co., NY, pg 14, June 7, 1813; Hartland consisted of the present towns of Hartland, Somerset, Royalton & parts of Newfane & Lockport, roughly the eastern half of Niagara Co. Born on 17 Nov 1779 in CT. Betsey died in Carlton, Barry Co, MI on 12 Apr 1863; she was 83. Buried in Fuller Cem., Carlton Twp., Barry Co, MI. Occupation: Housewife. The obituary of Mrs. Betsey J. Rogers of Carlton Twp. [The Hastings Banner, 16 May 1907, pg 6] indicates that "Betsey J. Firster, the youngest of six children, was born June 2, 1833, in Orleans County, New York. Her father, George Firster, died when she was but a child, after which she and her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Firster, moved to Ingham County, where they resided with Mrs. Firster's sister, Mrs. Matilda Abbey. May 17th 1855, the deceased was united in marriage to Jeremiah M. Rogers, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Cordelia Fuller..." My guess is that Betsey Ferster Barnum and George Firster were brother and sister, but I don't have proof at this time. ----------------------- George Firster was enumerated in the 1850 census at Carlton, Orleans Co., NY, on 15 July 1850, pg 2 (17/191)--George Firster, 56, male, farmer, value of estate $150, born PA; Mary, 49, female, bp CT; Mary I (?), 23, female, bp NY; Catherine L, 17, f, bp NY; Josephene C, 14, f, bp NY; Dan B, 11, m, bp NY, attends school Also appearing in the 1850 census of Carlton, Orleans Co., NY, are the following. I think it's very likely that Jacob Ferster, 74, is Betsey's brother: FERSTER, ANDREW 26 M NY CARPENTER 535 EMMA 18 F NY ELECTA 1 F NY FERSTER, JACOB 74 M PENN CARPENTER 533 MEHETIBLE 50 F VT DAVID 20 M NY JAMES 28 M NY CATHERINE 18 F NY LUCINDA 16 F NY FERSTER, LUCINDA - SEE WEST 469 FERSTER - SEE YARRINGTON 77 ------------------------ Also, Cordelia Ferster, wife of John J. Fuller of Carlton Twp., Barry Co., may have been a relative of Betsey's. In the 1870 census, John J. & Cordelia Fuller had an 18 year old male farm laborer living with them, named Evelyn Ferster Another possible relative found in the 1850 census of Yates, Orleans Co., MI--FIRSTER, HIRAM, 30, M, NY, HARNESS MAKER, 378; RACHAEL, 23, F, NY; MALVINA, 3, F, NY; WILLIAM H., 2, M, NY ------------------------ The following e-mail message was received from Steven Allan Mercer (MERCER0260@aol.com) dated 9 Aug 1998: "Don't know of anyone that has been researching the Firsters of Barry Co. and the info that I have is very limited. Most of all buried at Fuller Cem. just outside of Hastings. ----------------------------- The following e-mail dated 28 Nov 1998 was received from Marc Archer (marcher@gfn.org): Debra, you are the first person I've seen to be interested in the Ferster family. I almost didn't pursue your query. I thought that the possibility of your family being connected to mine was very removed. But, when you mentioned Carlton, Orleans Co., NY, I thought there must be a connection. There are two men named Ferster in the 1810 census of Genesee Co., NY. This is in an area that later (1824) became Orleans Co., NY. They were living near my relatives. in 1840, in either Milan, Monroe Co., MI, or York Twp., Washtenaw Co., MI, Erastus Knickerbocker (son of Darius Knickerbocker and Prudence Ann Ellsworth) m. Lucretia Allen (dau. of Talcot Allen and Lucy Rice). The two witnesses were Edward and Allen Foster. Later, I found that Edward Foster was really Edward Ferster/Firster. I haven't been able to find Allen Foster, but believe he was a Ferster too. One of the men from the 1810 census was in either the 1830 or 1840 census of MI, living in Monroe Co., MI. Lucretia Allen's stepfather was Joseph Sackett. Erastus Knickerbocker's sister Lucinda m. Amos Sacket, and there were other Sackett connections. In 1838, Arden Sackett was born to _____ Sackett and Fanny Ferster in London Twp., Monroe Co., MI. All these people are from Carlton, Orleans Co., NY, and show up in the same area of MI about 1833. I haven't been able to find any of them in the 1830 census of NY. I believe an area was missed, or part of the census is missing. Edward Firster, the witness of Lucretia Allen's marriage, married Lucy Allen, sister of Lucretia. Large parts of this family removed to Kent Co., MI by 1850. One of Fanny Ferster's children, by her second husband, John Bunce, was living in Grand Rapids, MI about 1881. Her name was Laura b. 1840. There was also: Hannah b. 1843 resided in 1881 in Milan village, and Fanny b. 1844 (the year her mother died) resided in Clair Co., MI. I don't know who any of these girls married. ----------------------- Another e-mail from Marc Archer dated 1 Dec 1998: In the 1881 Atlas and Biographical Sketches of Monroe Co., MI, pg 194, under Milan Twp. is: Medical: She was 83 years, 4 months, 25 days old when she died Research: The 1840 census in Carlton, Orleans Co, NY shows a George Fister [1/0/0/1/1/0/1 (males) -- 0/1/0/1/0/0/1 (females)]--he could possibly be Betsey's father or brother, not sure. 1850 federal census, Carlton Twp., Barry Co., MI, 14 Sep 1850, pg 115, 752/771--Betsy Barnum, 65, f, NY [Note: Living next door (753/772) was Seth P. Born on 16 Aug 1808 in Sheshequin, Bradford Co, PA. Lyman died in Carlton, Orleans Co, NY on 23 Mar 1866; he was 57. The Fuller book gives his death date as 22 March 1866. Buried in Carlton Cem., Carlton Twp., Orleans Co., NY. He is #48, pg 94 in the Fuller genealogy "Pioneer History of Orleans County, New York", pgs 197-198--"Lyman Fuller was born in Pennsylvania August 16, 1808. In February 1811, his father, Reuben Fuller moved with his family to near the lakeshore in West Carlton. In the fall of 1811, Capt. John Fuller, a brother of Reuben, settled in Carlton. Mr. Reuben Fuller died July 4, 1837. Mr. Lyman Fuller succeeded in the position of his father's homestead, on which he resided and where he died March 22, 1866. He was a much respected man among all who knew him. The book, "Landmarks of Orleans County, NY," contains the following information on pg 127-- Fuller, Nathan R., is a grandson of Reuben, who with his brother Captain John Fuller, came from Bradford county, Pa, and settled in Carlton in 1811 where they purchased from the Holand [sic] Land Company about 128 acres. The father of our subject was Lyman Fuller, born in Sheshequin, Bradford county, Pa., August 16, 1808 and died on the farm taken up by his father, March 22, 1866. Lyman married Roxana Barnum, who was born in Hartland, Niagara county, February 25, 1810, and died May 24, 1875. They were married in Carlton in 1827, and their family consists of four children, viz., Phoebe Ann, born in Carlton October 19, 1827, and was married to Warren Root, April 15, 1847, and had five children, dying in August 1886; Lyman Victor, Inez, Ernest, Alta R., Nathan Wallace, and Charlotte and a twin sister born April 12, 1841, and died in infancy. Nathan R. Fuller attended the common schools of Carlton till nineteen years of age, when he attended Yates Academy where he finished his education. He is a Republican and has represented his town as assessor. He is a member of the A. O. U. W. of Waterport Lodge 178, and has been a member of I.O.O.F. of Eagle Harbor. Mr. Fuller was married September 18, 1859, to Abbie Root, who was born in Orleans county. Her father, Daniel Root, was born March 23, 1797, in Otsego county, and her mother, Annis Hastings, was a native of Canada. Moses Root, father of Daniel, was one of the first settlers of Carlton, and landed at the mouth of Johnson's Creek in 1804. Moses and his sons Reuben and Daniel took part in the war of 1812. The children of Nathan and Abbie Fuller were, Alta, born in Carlton, February 5, 1862, and died March 24, 1862; Lottie D., born in Carlton, April 20, 1863, and married Fred E. Willson, July 24, 1889, and they have one son, Glen F., born October 20, 1891; Evart Lyman, born May 27, 1875, and died March 17, 1876; Newel C., born September 2, 1878; Willie F., born July 18, 1881, of Rochester. Daniel Cash, great-grandfather of our subject, was born in New England in 1747, and in 1769 he and his wife Mary Tracey Cash, were married, in the Warwick Baptist church of Orange county. In 1776 they emigrated to Pittston, PA, at which time occurred the troubles with the Indians. Mr. Cash's family being among those who were obliged to take refuge in the fort for safety from the Wyoming massacre. The children of Daniel and Mary Cash were--Isaac, Nathan, Reuben, Mehitable, Ziporah, Polly, Betsey, Phoebe, and Pamelia. Polly was the grandmother of Nathan R. The father and mother of this family died in 1789 in Orange county. Nathan R. Fuller owns the farm taken up by his grandfather Reuben in 181l. [The Lake Odessa Wave-Times, Lake Odessa, MI, Fei., Jan. 19 1912] NEIGHBORING VILLAGE AGAIN VISITED BY FIRE The Large Frame House of M. P. Fuller at Woodland Destroyed Sunday Evening Again our village has suffered from the effect of another disastrous fire. Sunday night about 9 o’clock as the people were leaving the M. E. church, fire was discovered in the large frame dwelling house of M. P. Fuller on East Broadway. When first discovered it was in the Ward house adjoining the Main building on the north, and although those who were there did the best they could, the fire had gotten under such headway that in a few minutes it had reached the Main building which was soon a mass of flames. The wind was blowing a gale from the north-west and for a time the dwelling of R. G. Rowlader and B. S. Holly seemed to be in danger but the snow on the roofs perhaps averted the danger. The dwelling house of L. L. Faul standing about 50 feet to the west of the burning building was also in danger and had the wind been in the east - would have taken the dwelling houses of L. L. Faul, C. S. McIntyre and Mrs. R. R. Atchison and from there to the barn of L. Faul when the business places on the east side of main street would surely have been destroyed. Thus while it is a hard blow to Mr. Fuller the wind saved the property of many others. Mr. Fuller who is of the age of 89 years and his wife a few years younger were asleep in the house at the time and were awakened and taken to the neighbors. Nearly everything of value was taken out, yet some of it was badly damaged by handling. We understand that the house and contents were insured in a Stock Company which F. F. Hilbert is agent. This is the 2nd fire within 3 weeks and the 3rd dwelling house burned since the village was organized. In addition to these we have had one saw mill and two elevators destroyed by fire during this time. At this writing we do not know whether Mr. Fuller will rebuild or not. ---------------------- [The Hastings Banner, pg 3, Sept. 18, 1913, Woodland] Uncle Mose Fuller, while helping his wife with the washing Monday forenoon in some way got one of his fingers in the gearing of the ringer. Uncle Mose, who is nearly 90 years old says he doesn't mind a little hurt like this much, if it wasn't that corn husking is so near and that his finger may bother him from earning full wages. ---------------------- MOSES P. FULLER Was Woodland's Oldest Resident--A Pioneer of Carlton, A Modest, Honest and Highly Respected Citizen "Uncle Mose" Fuller, who has been failing since about January 1st, passed away Sunday morning at nine o'clock. For several days it was evident that the end was not far away as his condition from day to day showed so plainly that his case was but a natural giving away of his once hardy constitution and great vitality. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon, and a beautiful service it was indeed. The weather was so perfect, the drive out to the Holmes Church by auto so well planned, the well chosen fitting remarks by Revs. Kenyon, Manning and Atchison, the passing of the old home, on the way to the cemetery, where Mr. and Mrs. Fuller had lived and labored so many years, and the appearance of the cemetery itself, altogether made an impression on many that they will never forget. The following obituary, prepared by a close friend of the family, was read from the pulpit. Moses P. Fuller was born in Berlin, Rensalaer County, New York on Jan. 26, 1823, and died at his home in the village of Woodland, Michigan on July 18, 1915, aged 92 years, 5 months and 22 days. He was married to Lucinda Barnum Jan. 1, 1849. To this union one son, Luman B. Fuller, was born, who at present lives in Yates, Orleans County, N.Y. On Oct. 10, 1849 his companion was taken from him in death leaving an infant child. On Nov. 28, 1854 he was united in marriage to Susan C. Sherman, with whom he celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last Thanksgiving day. Soon after this union Mr. and Mrs. Fuller moved from York State and lived in Lenawee county, this State about a year. Mr. Fuller working at his trade, that of carpenter. They then moved to Carlton, Barry County, where he continued working at his trade till the autumn of 1856 when he bought the 80 acre farm on which the Fuller cemetery is located. They lived on this farm about seven years, when they bought the 80 acres across the road on which they moved and lived until a little over five years ago, when they sold the old homestead and located in the village of Woodland where he has since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Fuller having no children of their own took into their home Kitty Grames, when a small child and was cared for and reared by them to womanhood as a child of their own would be, and is still loved and cherished as a daughter. She with her husband, Smith Holmes, were able to care for her foster father during his long spell of sickness and did all that willing hands could do to alleviate his suffering. Mr. Fuller was always ready with both money and labor in church work, being one of those who made it possible for the Holmes church neighborhood to have a place of worship. He was one of the pioneers of Southeast Carlton, and is remembered as a wise counsellor, honest and upright in his dealings with fellowman, an honored and respected citizen. He leaves to mourn a loving and devoted wife who has stood by him in the trials of life, and helped to make a home and plenty for the needs of old age, one brother, Russell Fuller, of Medina, N.Y. besides his foster daughter, Miss Kitty Holmes, husband and family, and a very large circle of friends and distant relatives. Born on 28 Jan 1841 in Carlton Twp., Orleans Co, NY. Philo died in Carlton, Barry Co., MI on 31 May 1925; he was 84. Buried on 2 Jun 1925 in Fuller Cem., Carlton Twp., Barry Co., MI. Occupation: Farmer. Religion: Methodist Episcopal. "Portrait and Biographical Album; History of Eaton and Barry Counties, Michigan, 1885," published by Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1891, pgs 559-560 PHILO FULLER, who is engaged in farming on section 20, Carlton Township, Barry County, is a native of New York. He was born in Carlton Township, Orleans County, January 28, 1841, and is a son of Harmon Fuller, a native of Connecticut who served in the War of 1812. He spent his entire life in the East but after his death his remains were brought to Michigan and here interred. In the family were twelve children, our subject being the ninth in order of birth, and Edwin and Joseph were numbered among the boys in blue of the late war. Philo remained at home until 1861 when, prompted by patriotic impulses, he responded to the country's call for troops and became a member of Company F, Third New York Cavalry, which was ordered to Maryland where the troops remained during the winter. In the spring they were sent to Virginia under Gen. Banks, crossing at Harper's Ferry,w here they were held in reserve while Banks raided Winchester. Next they were ordered back to Washington, D.C., where they spent two weeks, following which they went to Newbern, NC. The year the Third Regiment spent in that place the troops were engaged in picket duty and skirmishing, after which they were ordered to Fortress Monroe, VA, and went in to winter quarters. The following spring they returned to Newbern, where Company F remained until receiving its discharge in 1864, on the expiration of its term of enlistment. Mr. Fuller took part in several skirmishes and in Hyde County, NC, in 1863, was hit in the wrist by a ball which bent the handle of his revolver out of shape and then killed the horse on which he was riding. Two shots also penetrated his right arm but the wounds were not serious and on the 31st of May he was honorably discharged and returned to his home. The year 1865 witnessed the arrival of our subject in Barry County, Mich. He immediately purchased land--his present farm--and after building a log cabin began clearing it. Not a furrow had been turned or an improvement made and the present fine condition in which it is today, is all the result of the owner's labors. After clearing the land it was his next duty to provide a more comfortable home for himself and family than their pioneer cabin, and he erected the pleasant and commodious two-story frame residence at a cost of $2,000. It is tastefully furnished from basement to attic with rich yet neat furniture of the latest design and is supplied with all the little accessories which make life worth the living and indicate the presence of cultured people. A large basement barn was also built, 32 x 46 feet with eighteen feet posts, which is sufficiently large to accommodate all his stock with shelter during the inclement winter weather. A young orchard is just beginning to bear fruit and with the exception of five acres of timber land the entire farm is under a high state of cultivation. Mr. Fuller was united in marriage with Miss Elsie Morgan, daughter of William Morgan, on the 7th of April, 1866, by the Rev. Mr. Tapley, a Methodist minister. Unto them have been born three children--Wilbur H., who married Stella Sherman and resides on the old home farm; Myrtie B. and Roy C., are at home with their parents. This family has been identified with the history of Barry County for more than a quarter of a century and our subject is one of its valued citizens. -------------------------- [The Hastings Banner, Wed., 10 June 1925, pg 6] OBITUARY Philo Fuller was born in Carlton, Orleans County, New York, January 28, 1841. He was one of a family of 13 children, only one of whom, a sister, is still living. On August 19, 1861 he enlisted in the Third New York Cavalry and served in the Civil War until he was wounded in the right arm and wrist in a skirmish in Hyde County, North Carolina, March 4, 1863. Because of his incapacity for service he received honorable discharge at Newark, New Jersey, May 31, 1864. Soon after his discharge he came to Michigan and worked on the farm of his brother in law, Truman Barnum. On April 7, 1866 he was united in marriage with Elsie Morgan and they moved to the farm where he lived until his death. There four children were born: Wilbur H., Myrtie B., Roy Chester and Ralph, who died in infancy. August 19, 1903 his wife died after an illness of three years. He was married September 30, 1905 to Mrs. Mary E. Wilson who survives him. After an illness of several months he died at his home in Carlton Sunday, May 31 at the age of 84 years and 4 months. Besides his wife and three children, he is also survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Merrill H. Coats of Holly Hill, Fla., and by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Fuller had been a faithful member of the Carlton Methodist Episcopal church for over 30 years and will be missed in the church and the community by a host of friends and neighbors. The funeral was held at the home on Tuesday, June 2, with burial in the Fuller cemetery, Rev. M.A. Davison of Freeport officiating. Her father's name was William Morgan. Her parents were both born in Scotland, according to the 1900 census. [The Hastings Banner, Aug. 27, 1903, pg 1, ol 5] OBITUARY Fuller--Elsie M. Morgan was born in Ruggles, Ashland Co., OH, March 14th, 1847, and departed this life, August 19th, 1903, at her home in Carlton. She was united to Mr. Philo Fuller April 7th, 1866, and was the mother of four children, three of whom are living, Wilbur of East Jordan and Roy and Myrtle of Hastings, who with the father mourn the early departure of a kind and loving mother. She has resided in Carlton all her married life upon the farm that joins the Messer farm on the south. Her home was one of beauty and hospitality, and the hosts of friends who mourn her death attest how generous a hostess and true a wife she has been. She was converted about eight or ten years ago under the preaching of the Rev. William Wright and joined the M.E. church at Carlton Center, where she has been a faithful member, always doing what she could to help the master's work. During the last two years she has been a great sufferer, but her patience and fortitude was perfectly marvelous. The funeral services were held by her pastor, Rev. J.H. Bennett, at the home. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, attesting the high esteem in which the deceased was held by her neighbors and friends. The floral offerings by Roy Fuller's fellow workmen of the factory called forth many kind remarks. All seemed to try in some way to show their sympathy and interest and a large company followed the remains to the Fuller cemetery where her body now awaits a glorious resurrection. On Dec. 25, 1858 he was married to Jessie Barnum of Carlton township, Barry Co. To this union were born two children, Arvilla and Ford. Jesie died July 31, 1896. During the next four years Grandma Barnum assisted him greatly in caring for his young children. On April 17, 1900 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Clarinda Fuller, who has ever been a worthy companion. She with her son Ford have cared for him during his recent illness as only a devoted wife and dutiful son can minister to the earthly wants of husband and father. During his life he has experienced much sickness and earthly sorrow. When 21 years of age he was very ill of pneumonia. In 1896 typhoid fever nearly claimed him as a victim. At this time Jessie died. Owing to his power of endurance and indomitable will, he seemed to survive this shock, but when Arvilla died in 1905, his cup of sorrow was full. Perry Stowell had ideas and ideals peculiar to himself. His beautiful home and homelife were outward expressions of some of his ideals. How he admired a good horse! How he enjoyed, during the last few years, caring for and driving his span of blacks. These might be called selfish ideals but if so he had unselfish ideals. His devotion to his wife, to Gaylia and Ford and his two grandsons, and brothers amounted to worship. For some years past he has been financially able to assist others in different ways. His brothers and neighbors can testify to this. One brother knows that he was not only honest but fair in the highest sense of the word in all his dealings with mankind. In religious matters he believed in the principles upheld by the Methodist Episcopal church. He has been a member of the local church since 1911. No passing cloud of unbelief affected him. He was ever strong and steadfast. During the past winter he has said many times that everything was all right; that he would not fight death an instant. On the afternoon of May 1, when all nature was unfolding her beauty his heart and strength failed him. God had become the strength of his heart and his portion forever. He is survived by his wife, two children, Gaylia and Ford, three brothers, S.A. of Sault Ste. Marie, H.J. of Reed City and D.N. of Woodland.
