On 17 Mar 1852 when Lydia Lovina was 17, she married Almeron Calvin
WILSON, son of Alexander WILSON (14 Apr 1803-4 Jan 1831) & Catherine
HEFNER (ca 1809-ca 1892), in Carlton, Orleans Co, NY. Born on 25 Jan
1829 in Wilson, Niagara Co, NY. Almeron Calvin died in Montrose, Genesee

Almeron resided on a farm in Carlton, NY, about 12 miles north of
Albion. As a young man, he taught school for a couple of years. He
enlisted during the Civil War, joining the 17th Independent Battery, NY
troops, but was not in any actual fighting, later he received a
veteran's pension (Certificate No 571,649). He was an accomplished
musician; he frequently played the violin for dances.

In 1881 he went to northern MI, where he worked in a lumber camp. That
fall he returned to NY to get his family and take them by train to a
farm he had purchased in Roscommon, MI. He remained in Roscommon county
for only four years, then removed to Montrose, Genesee Co, MI.
-----------------------------------------------------
It stated in his pension file that since discharge from the war, he had
lived at the following locations--Carlton, Orleans Co, NY, 1865-1878;
Center Plains, MI, 1882-86, Montrose since 1886

A great-grandson, John Wilson of Dimondale, MI, said he remembered
hearing that his great-grandmother, Lydia Wilson wrote to Abraham
Lincoln, asking him to grant an early discharge to Almeron Wilson; the
President granted that discharge, but Almeron refused it, staying in the
Army until the end of the Civil War.

On 12 Jan 1856/1857 when Susan Adelia was 16, she married Valentine
Alexander WILSON, son of Alexander WILSON (14 Apr 1803-4 Jan 1831) &
Catherine HEFNER (ca 1809-ca 1892), in West Carlton, Orleans Co., NY.
Born on 29 Mar 1830 in Nelson, Niagara Co, NY. Valentine Alexander died
in Carlton, Orleans Co, NY on 23 Sep 1913; he was 83. Buried on 25 Sep
1913 in Carlton Cem., Carlton, Orleans Co., NY. Occupation: Farmer And
Merchant.

According to the “Record of the Town of Carlton, Officers, Soldiers and
Seamen,” prepared by the Town Clerk in 186(?), Valentine Alexander
Wilson enlisted on 11 August 1862 as a private in Company A of the 151st
Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry from Carlton. He enlisted at
Lockport and was discharged in Rochester on 1 July 1865. In Jan 1864 he
was promoted to corporal, then sergeant on 1 May 1865. The “Chronicles
of the 151st Regiment,” by Helena Howell (13), shows he enlisted 11
August 1862 at Carlton to serve three years and was mustered in as a
private, Company A on 22 October 1862, promoted to corporal (no date),
sergeant 1 May 1865, and mustered out with the company on 26 June 1865
near Washington, D.C. He took part in the battles of Locust Grove and
Manassas Gap, Wilderness 8 days battle, Sotsylvania, Hanovertown, Cold
Harbor, Opequan, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek, and McLain’s Ford. His
uncle, Luron D. Wilson, was commanding officer of Company F of the same
regiment.

He was a farmer and merchant, first in Wilson, then in Carlton. In 1874
he removed to the village of Kuckville, Carlton Township, where he had
previously purchased from George and Julius Kuck, approximately 80 acres
on Lots 6 and 8 of Section 9, Twp. 16, ange 2, in 1869. The same year
his wife, Susan, purchased other portions of Lot 8 from Minerva C.
Dunham, which were later built upon and lived in by Valentine, and later
his son, Fred, and grandson, Glen. In 1857, Valentine and his brother,
Almeron had purchased portions of Lots 1 and 11 from Catherine Farnham
(their mother or grandmother, not positive at this time). Much of this
was sold back to Almeron by Valentine in 1869. Valentine was listed as
an heir-in-law in his grandfather’s probate when euben died at Wilson,
NY, on 10 March 1862 testate. He and Almeron were mentioned as being
children of his deceased son, Alexander.

In the 1869 Directory for Orleans County, page 137, Valentine A. Wilson
is listed as a resident of Carlton (Kuckville), a farmer on Lot 11,
Section 9, Route 2. He was married to Susan A. Phelps on 12 Jan 1857 in
Carlton, Orleans Co., NY. The 1869 Orleans County Directory (LDS Lib
Call 974.791E5c) shows Valentine living on Lot 11 (S9-R2), Kuckville, as
a farmer.

He served as Kuckville postmaster for 10 years, and was living there in
1894.

HASTINGS MAN IS PROLIFIC WOOD CARVER AT 90; TURNS OUT MANY MINIATURE
ITEMS
HASTINGS--When Reuben Valentine Wilson retired from his farm in 1941 and
came to live at 221 West Apple here he couldn't reconcile himself to
inactivity. And so in spite of the fact that next September 6 he will
be 91 years old, he took up wood carving on a large scale.

Long expert with tools, Mr. Wilson in the last eight years has turned
out numerous articles of furniture in miniature, small rockers, tables
(some of them with attachment for inserting extra leaves, jewel boxes
and tiny hatchets, axes and hammers.) While the Hastings man maintains
quite a collection of his wood art, his children, other relatives and
friends have also been the recipient of many of his carvings. He has
also made a large number of baskets.

Mr. Wilson was born in New York state, the son of Almarion(sic) and
Lavina Wilson, and came to Barry county in 1880. As a young man he was
a railroad section hand. During his life he has farmed in both Carleton
and Hastings townships.

In the garage at his home Mr. Wilson has a large assortment of tools
which he uses in turning out his woodwork during the summer. Winters he
moves indoors to continue his hobby. But that doesn't occupy all of his
time, for every summer he maintains a large garden where he works
daily. In spite of his age he is in good health and is very active,
another one of his chores being to do the family shopping downtown.

Mr. Wilson resides with his wife and daughter, Miss Myrtle Wilson, rural
school teacher who will teach in the Durfee school next year. Last year
she taught in the Wood school.

23. Frederick E. WILSON, 1C4R. Born on 7 Dec 1859 in Carlton, Orleans
Co, NY. Frederick E. died in Carlton, Orleans Co., NY on 1 Aug 1934; he
was 74. Buried in Carlton Cem., Carlton Twp., Orleans Co., NY.

Cemetery records indicate his name as Frederick Henry, but one of his
children is listed as the son of Frederick E.

On the 1900 federal census, Fred is listed as the Postmaster of the Town
of Carlton (actually the village of Kuckvolle), which was part of
Carlton Township.

In 1900, Fred and Lottie obtained two parcels from his mother, Susan A.
Wilson, on the main street of Kuckville. One parcel included a house and
was situated across the street from his parents’ house. Locations of
these parcels are clearly evident on Orleans County maps of 1900. In
1913 they obtained Lots 1 & 3 (77.25 acres per lot), at the corner of
Lakeside and Fuller roads (Section 9, wp. 16, Range 2). These lots were
granted by her mother, Abbie R. Fuller (Land Records Book 149, page
303/304). Lot 3, on the west side of Fuller and south side of Lakeside
roads, included a house and barn and the whole parcel became the Wilson
farm. On the corner of Lot 3, SW corner of the crossroads, stood a
school house. The remains of the school house was still standing in June
1993 when Glen Peters Wilson toured the area.
