Gathered to his Father's, September 27, 1891.-John FERGUSON.
And all his days were eighty years, two months and sixteen days: and he died. "Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day is Israel!" ''And all the people wept." As King David and all the people wept for Abner, so pastor and people mourn this day for a good man fallen in our midst: a man of humble, retiring disposition, weak through the infirmities of age, yet "strong in the Lord and in the power of his might;" his works do follow him and the influence of his genuine Christian character will outlive time. We can pay no more eloquent tribute to our friend than that paid by strong men who looked upon his face, calm in God's peace, and turned away in silence with eyes blinded with tears, and grief too deep for utterance.
It needs no pen to portray his virtues or his failings. Half a century gives ample time for a man to become known in a community, and when death closes a well rounded life, no eulogy can add to or detract from his character. His inner life was best known and felt in the bosom of his family, as Divine grace transformed heart and life, making his daily living so quiet that only those who saw most of it knew its sweetness; and the beautiful peace which crowned his tears rests, a halo of glory, over the stricken household. A friend writes: "I can hardly think of the familiar home without his kind face and hearty welcome, but his has been a long life well spent and he will not go home empty handed." No man loved his earthly home better than he, and yet his last words were, "I want to go home"-so close were his weary feet treading upon the grave, and knowing that "here have we no continuing city," he "desired a better country, that is a heavenly" and believed that "to depart and be with Christ is far better."
John Ferguson was born in Moffat, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, July 11, 1811, and came to America in 1834, making the voyage in a sailing vessel in four weeks. He settled in Medina where he lived fifty-seven years and remained faithful to his trade, shoemaking; he occupied successively, shops on East Center street, the present site of Bent's Opera House, Brown Block on South Main street, and the shop near the post office, which he owned and occupied for twenty years. He was twice burned out.
January 7, 1841, he married Miss Jessie Grieve, of Perry, N.Y., who was born at Selcoth, near Moffat, Scotland. He was not in public life, but as a charitable and law abiding citizen was respected by all. He was for many years an elder in the Presbyterian church, a thorough lover of the bible, more than bearing the test of a scotchman by his ability to repeat the twenty third psalm, for beside most of the Psalms he could repeat many other portions of the Scriptures. After six weeks of suffering from heart failure, death came quickly at 6:35 Sunday evening; just as the people were gathering for worship, the soul left it's earthly tabernacle to sing God's praises among the saints in Paradise.
Mr. Ferguson left a wife and one daughter, Miss Jessie, and two sisters, Miss Mary Ferguson of Rochester, and Mrs. S. G. Pardy, of Medina, Mr. William, Mr. George and Miss Marion Grieve, of Perry, N.Y., Mrs. _. _. Johnstone, of New York, and Senator McNaughton, of Rochester, attended the funeral which was held from his late residence on West street at 8:30 p.m., September 29. He was buried in Boxwood, beside his brother, Henry, who died seven years ago and whose loss he never ceased to mourn, for as David loved Jonathan "he loved him, as he loved his own soul."
"Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of corn cometh in his
season." The promise is fulfilled. He has gone to his reward, leaving to his family that
which is better than great riches - good name. Mark, the perfect man, and behold the
upright: for the end of that man is peace."

Death of Rev. J. S. FLAGLER
Alexander, N. Y., July 8, 1860
Our venerable father in Israel, Rev. J. S. FLAGLER, died at the residence of his daughter,
Mrs. [Julia Ann] TANNER, in Ridgeway, Orleans co., on the evening of the 4th of July, in
the 78th year of his age. Father FLAGLER took a severe cold the early part of last winter,
in Ohio, and has been gradually declining ever since. He returned from the home of his
wife, in Ohio, the past spring, to close his earthly career, with his son-in-law and only
daughter. His son and other friends who have visited him recently, found him rapidly
sinking, in body and mind… He was a man of strong mental powers, unbounded will, and
unswerving temperament of disposition, so long as he felt that he was in the right way,
the way of duty; and yet he was amiable, social, and kind hearted.
He leaves a widow, two sons, three brothers (one a Presbyterian minister), and an amiable daughter, besides a few grandchildren, together with a large circle of friends… His remains were brought to his son’s in Darien on the 5th inst., and a discourse delivered by the writer on the 6th… His body was interred by the side of other relatives in the [Vickery] cemetery at Darien [Genesee Co.], to rest in peace with the Father.
Fraternally yours,
[Rev.] T[homas] J. Whitcomb
