LYNDONVILLE - Victim of the season’s latest drowning incident was nine-year-old Anthony L. GALLIPEAU, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles GALLIPEAU, Angling Rd., southwest of this village, who lost his life in Johnson Creek late yesterday afternoon. In spite of efforts of two fire department emergency squads, Boy Scouts and neighbors to revive the boy, he was pronounced dead by Coroner David Fraser about two hours after being pulled from the eight to 10 foot depth of the narrow creek. Dr. Fraser issued an accidental death certificate today.
The youngster, a resident of the Angling Road, Lyndonville, for only three weeks, had been playing with two friends on the bank of the creek near the point where Angling Road crosses the stream, and on the farm of Claude Wilson. With him were Rick Wilson, seven, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wilson, and his own sister, Hope GALLIPEAU, 11. Reports revealed that the victim was playing on the bank when the earth gave way and he slipped into the water. Young Rick Wilson, unable to swim well himself, jumped in to attempt a rescue, while the GALLIPEAU girl raced to the Wilson farmhouse for help. It was Mr. Wilson, working in a field, who went to the creek and pulled both boys out.
Firemen of the Lyndonville department were called immediately and applied an inhalator to the GALLIPEAU lad. When they foresaw the danger of running low on oxygen, the Medina emergency squad was called to assist. Before the arrival of firemen, two boy scouts, Francis and Norman Skinner, had gone to work in giving artificial respiration. Fire Chief Watson Plummer of Lyndonville said the Wilson boy, though not seriously affected by the ordeal, had swallowed a large quantity of water. Dr. Julius Layer of Lyndonville and Dr. Angelo Leone of Medina were also on the scene.
The dead youngster had moved from Rochester to Angling Road, on a farm adjoining the Wilson’s, about three weeks ago with his parents and three other children. The Gallipeaus have been parents of 14 children, and eight boys have died from various causes. Mr. GALLIPEAU is still employed in Rochester with a trucking concern.
Lyndonville - Funeral services for Anthony LeRoi GALLIPEAU, who lost his life by drowning in Johnson Creek Monday will be held Thursday forenoon. Prayers will be said at the Smythe Funeral Home at 9:30 o’clock and requiem mass will be recited at St. Joseph’s Church here at 10 o’clock. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Medina. The little boy was a communicant member of Holy Family Church, Rochester.
He is survived by his parents, four sisters and two brothers - Mrs. L. A. KLEIN, Avon; Mrs. Anthony DODGE, Rochester; Hope and Cecelia, Charles Jr., of Lyndonville and H. J. GALLIPEAU, Irondequoit, also one aunt, Mrs. Richard PARKER, Buffalo.

A PIONEER AT REST
Died, at his residence in this city on Saturday, December 28th, 1889, of
gastritis, after a week's distressing illness, W.P. GILLETTE, aged 49
years, 10 months and 13 days. The funeral services were held at the
Presbyterian church at 10 o'clock Monday morning. The lifeless form was
conveyed to the church from the residence escorted by the pall bearers and
accompanied by the brethren of the order of United Workman, of which the
deceased was a member. The church was crowded to overflowing with
sympathizing friends, and the Rev. J. M. Batchelder delivered a short
discourse. At the grave the exercises were conducted by the United Workmen
in their very solemn and impressive burial ritual, and the ceremonies were
closed by Rev. Batchelder pronouncing the benediction. Out of due respect
the for the deceased the mayor issued a proclamation requesting that all
business houses be closed from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. that all might have an
opportunity to witness the last sad rites.
Mr. GILLETTE was born and raised near Medina, Orleans county, N. Y., and came to this city as early as the fall of 1871 to engage in the general merchandise business with his boyhood friend and companion, C.J. WATSON, remaining in partnership with him until the fall of 1881, at which time the firm of Watson & Gillette was dissolved by reason of the ill health of Mr. Watson. After a short time he again formed a co-partnership with John Culver, a well-known commercial traveler. This partnership continued nearly a year, when Charley GILLETTE, a younger brother, entered into the business, Mr. Culver retiring from the firm and moved to California, from which time the business has been conducted under the style and name of Gillette Bros.
In 1873 Mr. GILLETTE married Mary BOTEFUR of this city, by whom he has had three children - one son and two daughters, the devoted wife and children being left to mourn the almost unbearable loss of an attentive husband and indulgent father. The deceased was an energetic member of the city council which office he has filled acceptably for nearly two years. He was scrupulously honest man, prompt to fill all obligations, a good, kind and accommodating neighbor, generous in his contributions for the general interest of this city and county and always dispensing charity freely to worthy objects. The loss to the city by the demise of Mr. GILLETTE can never be estimated and the sphere thus made vacant will be difficult to fill. The whole community heartily sympathizes with the family in their sorrowful bereavement and feels the loss in no light manner.
[NOTE: William Prescott GILLETTE's three children were: Milicent GILLETTE (Mrs. Frank B. DENMAN), William Prescott GILLETTE, Jr., and Maye Ellen GILLETTE (Mrs. Oscar C. PUSCH.)

The death of Willis A. GILLETTE, of Salt Road, occurred this morning at eight o’clock. Mr. GILLETTE had been in poor health from hardening of the arteries for something over two years and sank gradually to death as stated above.
He was born 70 years ago last September and was a son of Parlez GILLETTE, a pioneer of the county and a well known and highly esteemed resident of early days. Mr. GILLETTE had lived in the township where he died for practically his entire life and had the respect and and esteem of all who knew him. He had a large acquaintance in Medina and Knowlesville and in this entire section. A whole souled, genial, kindly man, it was no wonder that everyone who knew him was his friend and felt that he was man in whom the most implicit trust could be placed and that he would never be found wanting no matter what the test. He was a member of the Knowlesville Presbyterian Church and a member of the Medina Chapter No. 281, Royal Arch Masons.
The surviving family consists of the widow, one brother, Dyer B. GILLETTE, of Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. George BRACE of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The funeral will take place from the house at some hour on Thursday not yet announced.

The funeral services of Mrs. S. GODLEY, a notice of whose death appears in these columns, will take place at the residence, corner of Cross and Catherine streets, to-morrow (Friday) at one P. M. The remains will be taken to Holley on the 3:20 train for interment.
DIED: GODLEY – in Medina, Sept. 10th, 1879, after a brief illness with congestion of the lungs, Content M., wife of Sidney GODLEY, aged 59 years, 10 months and 25 days.
IN MEMORIAM
Seldom have we occasion to chronicle a death more unexpected or afflictive to
the surviving friends than that of Mrs. Sydney GODLEY, which was briefly mentioned in
last week's issue. She had been sick a week with Pneumonia, but no danger was apprehended
until the day of her death; and so unlooked for was a fatal termination, that only one
member of the family was present when it occurred.
Content M. HURD was born at Yates, Oct. 16, 1819. She was therefore at the time of her death nearly sixty years old. Her father, Isaac HURD, was for many years, and until he died, an honored officer of the Methodist church at Lyndonville, of which the daughter early became a member. Her mother was regarded as truly a mother in Israel. It was a priceless blessing to have had such a parentage. Content was married to Sydney GODLEY in 1844, and soon removed to Ludlowville, Tompkins county, where she united by letter with the Presbyterian church, with which her husband was connected. In a few years they returned to Orleans county, where the family have since resided. Eight years were spent at Holley. Mrs. Godley was a member of the Presbyterian church of this village at the time of her death, and her remains were brought here for interment.
The subject of this sketch was one to whom no published obituary can do entire justice. She was naturally so reticent and retiring, and her life so quiet and unostentatious, that one needed to know her well to appreciate her strength and excellence of character. To know her well was to esteem her very highly, and to admire her uniformly unselfish and consistent walk in life. She was a woman of strong mind and sound judgment. If she did not at once open her heart to strangers, or readily exchange old friends for new ones, her friendship when once secured, was doubtless the more lasting, and certainly the more highly prized. Her gentle unaffected demeanor was the outcome of a heart where dwelt the graces of the Spirit. Her ornaments were such as the Apostle commands to the women of his day and ours. In her peculiarly unobtrusive manner she was faithful in the performance of all life’s duties, but the stronghold of her affections was the domestic circle. The death of such a woman is a severe loss to the community; and to her family, to whom she was the wise friend and counselor, no less than the devoted wife and mother, her loss is overwhelming. The sympathy of their many friends is extended to them in their bereavement.

CAME BACK TO DIE.
How Sidney GODLEY Took Arms Against his Sea of Troubles.
"Out of money, out of work, and sick," were the reasons Sidney GODLEY of Indianapolis,
formerly well known resident of this village, gave for coming
back to Holley last week and shooting himself. He reached here Thursday evening on the
10:46? train, and engaged a room at the Mansion House. The next day he came down about
10 o'clock and sat in the reading room for about an hour. He talked of incidental matters
with a number of acquaintances, among them Dr. Cady, whom he sent for. A little before
noon he went to his room, saying he was ill and would lie down.
Nothing more was seen or heard of him until about 10 o'clock that evening when the clerk
Henry Hurlburt, and the landlord, Mr. Nelligan, went to his room to see if he was in it.
They discovered him lying on the floor in a semi-unconscious state. They lifted him up
and laid him on the bed. They supposed at first that he was ill, but after notifying
some acquaintances who were in the reading room, and sending for a physician, a further
examination showed that he was bleeding freely from a wound in the abdomen, the cause of
which was explained by finding in the bed a revolver with one chamber discharged.
Doctors Taylor and Armstrong made an examination and found the ball had entered near
and below the navel, passing entirely through the body and out near the spine, inflicting
a necessarily fatal wound. It is somewhat unusual for a suicide to inflict a wound in
this part of the body, but it seems that it was done with deliberate forethought,
the wounded man replying to a question as to why he had not shot himself in the head or
heart by saying that in doing so there would have been more chance of making a failure
by missing the vital part.
From the time of his discovery until his death, about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Mr. GODLEY was conscious a considerable portion of the time. He would talk but little concerning his act and the reasons therefore, and when questioned answered that the letters to be found in his pocket would explain everything. There were found to be three of these, one to his son-in-law, Charles CRAMER, of Indianapolis, one to his wife in Rochester and one to Henry J. Buell, of this village, an intimate friend of Mr. CRAMER. The letter to his wife was dated in Cleveland, Tuesday, February 12th, and the other two at the Fillmore House, Buffalo, February 13th. The letter to Mr. Buell began as follows: “As Charlie’s friend I write you; Henry, I am out of business, out of money, and sick. Don’t know of anything only to be buried in Holley beside my wife. It is my lot and paid for. Don’t send for Charlie, but write to him.” Then followed directions for recovering his gold watch, which he had pawned in Cleveland, his wife’s address, directions to notify the Medina Masonic Lodge, of which he had been a member, and an appeal to “give this old body a decent burial as you can.” The letter to Mr. CRAMER commenced about the same as that to Mr. Buell, and was mainly information regarding the personal effects he had left in Cleveland. It closed as follows: “Now farewell my children. My love to Annie and the children, only say to them, grandpa is dead. Don’t mar their life by the truth. They may never know. Farewell. “FATHER.” The letter to his wife was sealed, and was delivered to her unopened. It was subsequently read as part of her testimony at the Inquest, but contained nothing of material public interest.
Mr. GODLEY’s wife was notified Saturday morning, and came here on the 3:12 train, less than an hour before he died. Coroner Taylor impaneled a jury and held an inquest Saturday evening, the verdict being that GODLEY died from a pistol wound inflicted by his own hand. It was not ascertained exactly when the fatal shot was fired, as it was not heard by anyone. GODLEY said it was done about 4 o’clock the morning after his arrival (Friday) but it seems improbable that he would have been able to come down stairs as he did Friday forenoon if the shot had been fired before that. It is probable that GODLEY was confused as to the time, and that the shooting was done Friday afternoon or evening, the pistol being muffled in his clothing to deaden the report. The weapon used was a 32 calibre, self-cocking young America bulldog. A nearly empty laudanum bottle was also found in the room. But he was known to have quite frequently taken laudanum for sleeplessness. Several years ago he nearly died at a place in Ohio from an overdose of this drug, and the newspaper accounts stated that it was taken with suicidal intent. After his recovery, in a letter to the Standard, he denied that he had intended to take a fatal dose.
Mr. GODLEY was 66 years of age, and was a resident of this county many years. He was in hardware business first at Lyndonville and afterwards in this village. Subsequently he traveled for a number of years for Bussey, McLeod & Co., the stove manufacturers. His first wife (Content HURD) died here in 1876. She was a very estimable lady, and was highly regarded, as were also her daughters. Several years after the death of his first wife Mr. GODLEY married a lady in Ohio, but they separated after a year or two and she procured a divorce. His third wife, who survives him, he married a little over a year ago. They lived in Indianapolis until November last, when Mrs. GODLEY came to Rochester to stay with her daughter there.
Mr. GODLEY had been out of employment for a large portion of the time during the past six months and was obliged to pawn his watch to obtain money to come to Holley from Cleveland. But the “last straw,” as he stated in memoranda left in a note book in his pocket, was the publication of scandalous story concerning him in a disreputable Sunday paper in Cleveland. He claimed the story was to a large extent a fabrication for the purpose of blackmail, and that $25 had been demanded to secure its suppression, which he was unable to pay even if he had been willing to do so.
After Mr. GODLEY’s death the body was taken to J. H. & C. J. Smith’s undertaking rooms, and prepared for burial. The interment took place Monday afternoon in his lot in Hillside Cemetery, with a brief service at the grave conducted by Rev. Geo. T. Galbraith, of the Presbyterian church.

GOODWIN. - Died, in Yates, Orleans Co., N. Y. April 21ST, 1875, of scarlet fever, Florence A., only child of Ossian D., and Elizabeth J. GOODWIN, aged four years, two months and twenty-three days.
By this sad bereavement, fond parents have been robbed of a bright jewel unsurpassed in lovliness(sic) and tender emotions. She was affectionate and beloved by all who knew her. She made friends of every one who had the privilege of listening to her tender prattling, which was sweeter to us than the softest notes of the feathered songster. She was blooming as the rose which unfolds new beauties every day. She was like the rays of the morning sun that illuminated the whole household with all its brightness; her loss is not only felt by the home circle, but the community seem to mourn and deeply sympathize with all the friends that have been called to mourn the loss of such an untold treasure. During her sickness, when reason was almost dethroned, she broke forth in soft, tender strains and sweetly sung as if the chords were tuned by some angelic choir. Soon after this she exclaimed, "I want to go home." After a week of suffering she left us for her heavenly home, passing through the pearly gates into the new Jeruselem(sic)
and there to be crowned with a diadem of glory, to go out no more forever. I would say to the afflicted parents, prepare to meet your loved one in that happy clime where pain, sickness and sorrow is never felt.

The body of the aged man was found in the basement of his home on a blood-soaked cot by his wife, Margaret, when she returned to her home shortly after four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mrs. GORSKI called the Medina Fire Department who later called the Medina Police and Coroner David FRASER of Lyndonville. The latter stated that the man had been dead for several hours before he arrived which was shortly after the discovery.
The lack of any weapon or sharp instrument that might have been used in the slashing of the throat caused the Medina Police to report the affair to the State Police. Lieut. William STEVENSON of the Batavia Barracks together with Corp. Clarence PASTO of the BCI and Sgt. Harry ADAMS of the Gaines Sub Station responded to the call and also were unable to find any evidence of an instrument that might have been used. While it had every indication of a suicide the lack of a knife or other sharp instrument lent some indication of foul play. Mrs. GORSKI stated that her husband was upstairs shaving when she left her home in the early afternoon.
Coroner FRASER had the body taken to the Cleary Funeral Home where an autopsy was conducted by Dr. J. TANNENBERG, Genesee-Orleans pathologist, this morning that reported his findings to Mr. FRASER.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Joseph of Buffalo and Zygmond of Medina, a daughter, Mrs. Genevieve SNAITH of Middleport, one grandson and one granddaughter.

Our citizens were shocked Saturday noon by the report that George W. GOTTS, one of Medina's most prominent business men, had died suddenly while acting as inspector on the registry board in the second district of Ridgeway. Mr. GOTTS was in his usual health up to the time of his death and was conversing with those about him, when he was noticed to suddenly straighten back in his chair and act as if he was choking. Those in the room sprang to his assistance and a physician was summoned, but he expired within thirty seconds from the time he was first noticed to act strangely. Coronor Scott arrived a short time after the unfortunate man breathed his last and stated that the cause of death was appoplexy(sic). An inquest was not deemed necessary and the remains were conveyed to his home, where the family, who had been previously notified of the sad affair, were prostrated with grief.
Mr. GOTTS was born in England, nearly sixty-one years ago, and came with his parents to this country when quite young. He had been engaged in the stone business nearly all his life and for the past quarter of a century had been superintendent of the Holloway quarry in this place. By his sterling business qualities he came into possession of considerable property and was universally esteemed by all with whom he had business transactions for his honesty and integrity. By his death this community loses one of its best business men and citizens, and his family, who have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in this sad bereavement, will mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.
The funeral services were largely attended at his late home, about a mile north of this village, Monday afternoon, and the remains were interred in Boxwood Cemetery.

At the hour of going to press we learn of the death of John GOTTS, of Shelby Basin, by drowning in the canal. Mr. GOTTS it seems has been somewhat deranged during the past year, caused it is said by exposure to the hot sun while at work in the quarry, and his friends have of late been apprehensive of the result, fearing he would make way with himself. Yesterday, it is reported, he made two attempts to drown himself, and being rescued by friends he disappeared last night. Suspicion was at once aroused and search commenced by dragging the canal this morning. The search was successful, the lifeless body of the unfortunate man being found about eleven o'clock near Jackson's bridge, west of Medina. Coroner James, of Shelby, being notified, impaneled a jury forthwith, who, after viewing the remains adjourned until four o'clock this afternoon.
Deceased was about fifty years of age, has resided near Medina for many years, and besides three brothers, leaves a wife and three or four children.
