Rev. James A. HOGAN, Pastor Of St. Mary’s, Died Late Last Night In Medina Hospital
The death of Rev. James A. HOGAN, for a period of nearly 18 years pastor of St. Mary’s
Church, occurred shortly after eleven o’clock last night in Medina Memorial Hospital
where he had been a patient since July 21st. Death was due to a complication of diseases
and fatigue. Father HOGAN suffered a serious illness followed by pneumonia ten years
ago from which he never fully regained his normal health. He was also confined to the
hospital two years ago for several weeks due to a stomach ailment.
His was the second death to occur in local Roman Catholic parishes during the past two
weeks. Rev. John C. Cox, pastor of St. Stephen’s Church in Middleport, died at his home
on August 15th.
Father HOGAN was born in the Village of Susquehanna, Pa., March 9, 1880. After passing through the grades and graduating from the high school in Binghamton, N. Y. he entered the College and Seminary of Our Lady of the Angels, Niagara University, from which he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Colton May 25, 1907. His first appointment was as assistant to Rev. Jeremiah McGrath of the Annunciation Church in Buffalo where he served for one year. He was then assigned to assist Monsignor Lanigan of St. Bridget’s parish, also of Buffalo. After three years at that church he was appointed pastor of Dayton - Forestville parish. In March 1916 Father Hogan was appointed pastor of St. Francis’ Church, Corfu, with a mission at Crittenden. On June 1st, 1919 he was assigned to the Church of St. James, Depew, where he remained until he was appointed to the pastorate of St. Mary’s Church here January 15, 1927 with that of St. Joseph’s Church in Lyndonville.
During his service at St. Mary’s parish Father Hogan has improved the parish institutions as well as the church property. During the fall of 1927 Father Hogan expanded St. Mary’s parochial school by adding the first two high school grades to the eight which had been in existence since 1922 when the school was first founded by the late Rev. Thomas A. Gleason, his predecessor. Later the two upper grades were suspended because of the inability to adequately secure an instructional staff. In 1940 the hundredth anniversary of the founding of St. Mary’s parish was observed at which time the church was redecorated under the personal hand of Chevalier Ilario Panzironi of New York, internationally known artist. Preparation for the event and its observance were under the personal supervision of Father HOGAN. Other additions and improvements included the erection of a Grotto of Our Lady on the school grounds and during his service the financial condition of the parish had been considerably improved with the parish mortgage practically halved.
Father Hogan had taken a keen interest in the Boy and Girl Scout Troops of the parish and the institution of several cultural features of the school and under his direction field masses were held each Memorial Day at St. Mary’s cemetery. Ill health compelled him to forego the occasion this year. In 1927 Father HOGAN wrote and published a book called, An Essay On the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri”. The purpose of the book according to the author was “Making better known the ‘central man of the whole world’ and his incomparable poem of time and eternity”. The author also gave many lectures on the same subject.
In addition to his parish duties Father HOGAN has taken an active interest in many community affairs. He was keenly interested in the operation of Medina Memorial Hospital and several years ago personally provided funds that enables persons of restricted means to have oxygen provided when necessary to treatment. This has been called by hospital authorities the Father Hogan Fund. Father HOGAN was keenly interested in charities and assisted in many charitable organizations, as well as many secret charities. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, third degree, and was Chaplain of Court Santa Maria, Catholic Daughters of America. Last Christmas Father HOGAN presented each service man and woman of the parish with a small pocket prayer be recited by the priests at 4 p. m. The body will lie in state in the church from that time until the funeral.
Pontifical Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 Saturday morning, with Bishop Joseph A. Burke, Auxiliary Bishop of Buffalo, officiating, assisted by a number of priests.
Surviving Father HOGAN are two brother, William HOGAN of Binghamton, and Lawrence HOGAN of Seattle, Washington; and one sister, Mrs. John O’DONNELL of Binghamton. He was also brother to the late John, Michael, Mayme, Johanna HOGAN, and Mrs. Patrick HEHER. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Born in West Shelby sixty-three years ago last July, she lived there and on West avenue, Medina, until ten years ago when she went to California to be with her cousin, Sara Ann PARSONS WARSON.
Those who loved her can scarcely remember when she was not constantly suffering, but her last years of increased pain were brightened by sweet companionship and tender ministrations of her cousin and her relatives who loved her. She was a consecrated Christian and when, thru the long years, complete healing failed to come, she had the courage of her faith, resting in the promise given Paul in his trouble, "My grace is sufficient for thee."

East Shelby: Mrs. J. HOOD departed this life the 14th inst., aged 74 years. The funeral services were held at the Brick Church, Shelby Center, the 16th inst. The sermon, delivered by the Rev. Hodgman, of Knowlesville, from the text found in Psalms 144th and 3rd verse, was very instructive and appropriate. Mrs. HOOD came with her husband to this section when all was a howling wilderness, and located near the place of her residence at the time of her decease. From what we can learn from her old acquaintances, her life was that of a devoted christian.

Mary Catherine HOOD, the wife of Charles N. HOOD and considered despite forty years of partial helplessness as one of the most brilliant women in Medina, died late yesterday afternoon at the age of sixty-four in the Hood home on Prospect avenue. Her passing followed a sudden collapse on Saturday.
Born in Ridgeway, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. (Aaron) B HUNT, Mrs. HOOD was a resident of Medina since she moved here at the age of nine. She was educated in the Medina schools and at Vassar College and kept throughout her life a renewed store of information and thought thru the mediums of Europeon travel and active participation in civic affairs and as a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church.
She was married to Charles N. HOOD on December 1, 1890. Together they traveled through Europe twice. After their first trip, in 1903 she assisted her husband in writing “Europe on Four Dollars per Day,” a book which went into five editions. Mrs. HOOD took their second trip in 1909 in a wheel chair. The journey produced another book on travel, ‘The Second Trail.” It was the last time Mrs. HOOD rode in a train or interurban. One of the greatest pleasures to her avid mind was the constant quality of her friends, most of whom she had known through her whole life. She rose above the handicap of gradual incapacitation with the care of her husband, who saw that she should not lack the mediums of intellectual growth.
Mrs. Hood is survived by her husband, a son, Robert N. HOOD, a teacher in the English department of Cook Academy of Montour Falls, a daughter, Miss Dorothy HOOD, a teacher in St. Catherine’s School of Richmond, Va., and one grandson, Charles Newton HOOD, II. Funeral services will be held at the late home at 2.30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with burial in Boxwood Cemetery.

Mr. HOOD was signally honored by his fellow citizens who repeatedly elected him to positions of public trust. He served for twenty years as one of the assessors of the town. He was especially enthusiastic in his support of any interests pertaining to the welfare of the old soldiers. He was for many years Commander of the S. J. Hood Post, G. A. R. Rev. Henry HORNSBY was born in Stourton, Warwickshire, England, August 19, 1821, and departed this life in the triumphs of the faith of Jesus Christ at his residence in West Kendall, New York, September 25, 1906.
In 1839 his parents and their family came to America - Henry included - and settled in the town of Farmington, Ontario County, New York. In 1843 they moved to western New York and located in the town of Murray, Orleans County. Later his father and he bought a farm in the town of Kendall, in the aforementioned county and moved on to it in 1847. The farm was located near West Kendall. Here and at west Kendall he spent the remainder of his years excepting the time he was engaged as a travelling preacher, first in the Methodist Episcopal and later in the Free Methodist Church. Brother Hornsby, like young Timothy, was in touch with the religious life, and from a child he knew the Holy Scriptures which were able to make him wise unto salvation. When but seven years old he heard the first sermon that made a lasting impression on his young mind. The text used was from 2 Tim. 4: 7,8. When in his tenth year he became a pupil in the Wesleyan Methodist Sunday school in his native country. In the winter of 1843 he was deeply convicted of sin, and a few weeks subsequent to this awakening he attended revival services which were being held in the village of West Chester. In this meeting he earnestly sought the Lord, and was soundly converted to God. On February 26 he united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Shortly after this the family moved to the town of Murray, a few miles from the village of Brockport, where he felt himself a stranger among strangers, and longed for a church home. But upon inquiry for a Methodist church he was informed that there was one in Brockport, and soon after he went there and united by letter. He was connected with the Brockport society about four years, when the family moved on to their new possessions in the vicinity of West Kendall, where he found a congenial church home, and as he expressed it, 'A good society of real Methodists; dead in the world and alive to God.' In 1848 he was appointed one of the class leaders in the society, and during that same year was given an exhorter's license, but he failed to use it. However, the following year he says, 'I was forced into the work.' Then he had regular appointments, and filled them alternately with the other preachers and exhorters. In 1852 he received his first preacher's license and was recommended to the ensuing Genesee annual conference as a suitable person to be received into the conference on trial. The recommendation was favorably entertained by the conference, and he was appointed to the Sweden circuit. Previous to this action of the conference in his case, he stated he had never used a text to preach from but three times, so when his appointment was given him his retiring, timid nature shrank from the task. He informed his presiding elder, Rev. Asa Abel, that he could not do circuit work, and he upon receiving the said information relieved the bashful young preacher of his charge, and appointed him as colporteur for the Genesee district and transferred him to Kendall. He was connected with the Genesee conference of the Methodist Episcopal church from 1852 to 1861. In 1861 he united with the Free Methodist church and served the following circuits within the bounds of the Genesee conference: Kendall and Clarkson; Kendall, Yates and Carlton; Perry; Java; Hulberton. He served as chairman for several years on the Wyoming and Genesee districts. On account of physical disability he was superannuated in 1869. In 1876 he was again made effective. In 1879 he was again superannuated, which relation he held to the close of life. He was elected a delegate to conference in 1866, 1870, 1874, 1878, 1886, 1894, and a reserve delegate in 1894.
In February, 1849, he was united in wedlock to Miss Miranda JENKS, who for seventeen years shared with her husband life's vicissitudes, and especially in the conflict which led to the organization of the Free Methodist church; but in 1866 she was called home to rest with the Lord. On the 20th of March, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia R. DUGAR, in whom he found a faithful wife and true helpmate who survives to mourn her sorrowful bereavement. May the Father of mercies comfort and sustain her in her affliction.
For many years the deceased was in poor health, but diligent. He was a great reader, and his mind was well stored with useful knowledge. He acquired a good property, and with it his benovolences were scattered with a liberal hand. He was deeply interested in the welfare of the Free Methodist church, and his heart was moved with desire for her prosperity. He gave liberally to the missionary cause, the publishing house and other enterprises, but his chief benevolences were in favor of the Orphanage and Home of Gerry, New York. He was one of its originators, also one of the original board of trustees, and the honored president of the institution from its incorporation till his death. He not only contributed liberally toward its support while living but has deeded property to the board of trustees, the proceeds of which are to be used for its benefit as long as it is in existence. Brother Hornsby was a preacher of ability. The text was well digested, the discourse well arranged, clear and convincing in its presentation, and well supported by the scriptures and in harmony with its teaching and spirit. He was sound in the faith and hated shams and make-believes. He possessed a critical ear for the Bible, and had no sympathy with any pulpit effort that did not harmonize with it. What he had to say he said in plain English, at times much to the embarrassment of the egoist, but those who desired to be corrected when it was needed appreciated his manliness and thanked him for his kindness. For seven years the writer was pastor on the Kendall circuit, and while he had many friends on the circuit, both in the society and outside, there was none truer than he. But the dear one has been taken from us to rest in a better clime. May his virtues be emulated by those who are left to follow. In his demise the church has lost a true and constant friend, the Bible class an able and faithful teacher, the community an upright Christian citizen.
The funeral was held in the Free Methodist church where for many years he had been a constant attendant. The services were conducted by the undersigned, according to a request made by our dear brother many years since. The text and hymns for the occasion were his own selections. The singing was congregational. Revs. William Pearce, E.A. Taylor, L.K. Manning, E.C. Reber, A.H. Bennett, L. Ecker, A.K. Bacon and G.W. Worthington were present, some of whom took part in the service. The bearers were selected from the preachers. They bore the body and laid it to rest in the beautiful cemetery of West Kendall, awaiting the time when Jesus will come to claim from the dust His sleeping dead. WILLIAM MANNING

After an illness of two weeks of typhoid fever, Raymond Thurston HOWARD, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank HOWARD, of South Academy street, died at the home of his parents last evening. Mr. Howard would have been twenty-one years old next June and had lived all of his life in Medina. He was educated in the Medina schools and was for a time connected with his father's business here and later went to Rochester where he was with a clothing firm this summer, being promoted to a traveling position with the manufacturing firm of Garson and Meyers.
He returned about two weeks ago from a long Southern trip, during which he visited most of the Southern states as far as Texas. About five weeks ago in Savannah, Georgia, he was slightly sick and it is thought that, possibly, it was in that section that he caught the fever which developed on his return home. The case was so severe that there was little hope from the first, although physicians, nurses and friends did everything that could be done for the sufferer and a brave fight was made for his life.
Courteous, genial and kindly, he had many friends in Medina and was making a splendid record with his employers for his energy and enthusiasm in his work. The afflicted parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.
The funeral services will be held in the Methodist church, of which he was a member, on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock.

Dr. Dan R. HOWE died at the home of his brother-in-law, M. Eugene THORPE, in Knowlesville, at eleven o’clock last night. Dr. HOWE had been ill for many months of a complication of troubles. The end was peaceful.
Dr. HOWE was born in Knowlesville 29 years ago last September, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John HOWE. After finishing his early education in the common schools he was graduated from the Buffalo Dental College and practiced in various places, finally settling permanently in Medina where he made many warm friends and was building a large professional following. He was a member of Medina Lodge, No. 336, F. & A. M., the Royal Areanum, the Alert Club and had earned an honorable discharge after five years of service in Company F. Mrs. Mary FROST HOWE, who passed away December 7th, 1916, was born at the Frost homestead, near Knowlesville, in 1837. Her parents were among the builders of the Presbyterian church of Knowlesville. She herself joined the church at about the age of twelve and at that time became a member of the choir, and as the years passed, her sweet and lovely voice brought cheer and peace to many a sorrowing fellow member. Her winning personality and her cheerful willingness to serve, gave her a place in our heart, and homes, such as very few have been privileged to occupy.
For many years Mrs. HOWE took an active part in the Sunday School, not only teaching, but by her own life giving the next generation an example of happy, consistent Christian living. Her home life was ideal. To her husband and seven children, she was a devoted wife and mother, fitting her children to become active and useful members of the community, her friends were numberless and loyal.
But if God gave her blessings, it was also his will to send her sorrow. While her youngest son was still a boy, her husband passed away, and, one by one, she was called upon to bid farewell to six of her children. But her Heavenly Father kept her close to his side and gave her strength. The spirit she always displayed and her attitude toward her life’s troubles will always be an inspiration to those who have been privileged to know her.
Her life has always been an active one and her many friends rejoice that God made it possible for her to do for others even to the last. A few evenings before she was called home, she gave herself and her brother pleasure by playing and singing some hymns.
(Note: No record of her burial. Her parents were Franklin FROST & Fanny SMITH and they are buried in Knowlesville cem.)

DR. BENJAMIN HOWES 1858 - 1946
The Albion Midlander reported the following in 1934: 'We know of no man, old or young, who gets any more "kick" out of life than Dr. Benjamin HOWES, prominent Orleans County Veterinary.' Just mention his name to someone who knew him and see if it doesn't bring on a smile or rekindle a reminiscence. He was born in West Gaines where he taught school for around two years before attending the Toronto University Veterinary College for three years. In 1884 he married Clara VanCAMP (1862-1934) and they had two sons, Whitney and Murray. After a few years of veterinary practice in Orleans County he went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a livestock inspector. After twenty years he returned to Orleans County and re-established his practice at Carlton Station where he completed 55 years as a veterinarian. He was an ardent baseball fan, cross country motorist, antique collector and horseman supreme. Once, as a motorist going through Ohio he drove through a stop sign; immediately pulled over by two policemen he gave them a 'sob story' saying with real tears, 'If I ever get back to the farm I'll never leave it again.' One of the officers said to the other, 'Let the old guy go.' Needless to say "Doc" laughed about that for years! As an antique collector he had one of the most fabulous collections of primitive farm relics ever amassed in western New York. It was unfortunately all sold at public auction following his death. As a horseman belonging to the Orleans County Boots and Saddle Club, no parade was ever complete without "Doc" and his splendid horse Sandy. Fifty-five years ago on August 18, 1937 during a parade for the opening and dedication of the Route 18 bridge over Oak Orchard River, Sandy reared up, collapsed and died on the spot. This unforeseen calamity is probably the most remembered event of the day by those who attended the bridge opening festivities.

A frightful accident occurred in the town of Carlton last Wednesday evening which resulted in the instant death of Morris HOYES who was feeding a threshing machine.
Barley was being threshed on the farm of Russell Clark, one mile south of Lakeside, and HOYES was feeding when the machine became slightly clogged. HOYES attempted to loosen the grain by thrusting his right hand into the cylinder when suddenly his arm was caught in the cogs and he was drawn in before the other workmen present could realize what had happened. The engineer reversed the engine, and those present quickly went to the aid of the unfortunate man. The top of the cylinder was removed and a most ghastly spectacle was beheld. The right arm of HOYES was torn into shreds and his entire head was mashed to a jelly. Death had been instantaneous. The body was taken out and removed to the young man’s home a few miles north of Kenyonville.
HOYES was 23 years of age and favorable known in the vicinity. He was unmarried and lived with his father (William HOYES) and mother (Mary TAYLOR). The accident was seen by upwards of a dozen men who were powerless to prevent it. Coroner Munson of Medina was notified, but deemed it unnecessary to hold an inquest.
Lists young Morris HOYES, of Carlton, as “a steady young man, aged twenty-four and was to have been married next month to an estimable young lady”. They also added: “We learn that the direct cause of the accident was the rushing of the loose grain onto the table by the pitchers, a thing which frequently occurs, as all threshers know. A thoughtless act, but always attended with inconvenience and danger to the feeder”.

The death of Aaron Bacheller HUNT occurred at his home, corner Pearl and Prospect streets, on Tuesday evening. He had been in poor health for several years, but his final illness was of but a few weeks duration. Mr. HUNT's parents came to this county from Bennington, Vt., early in the century and located in the midst of almost unbroken forest on a track of land in the town of Yates.
Aaron HUNT was born April 4th, 1818, and was one of the first white children born in the town of Yates. His early life was that of a pioneer’s son, clearing away the woods, tilling the soil and obtaining an education as best he might. For several years he taught school and later became engaged in the buying and marketing of livestock in which he continued for many years until he removed to Medina in 1877.
In the old 'general training' days he was captain of militia. He has held few public offices beyond those of assessor and other town offices. He was for several years a member of the Medina Board of Education.
He was married in 1865 to Sarah M. GROAT, of Amsterdam, N. Y., and has had three children, one son and one daughter dying at early ages. Mr. HUNT was a man of the strictest integrity, generous, charitable and public spirited. He was not a member of any church, but gave liberally to the support of the Universalist and other churches. He was a member of Medina Lodge F. & A. M., and that fraternity will have charge of the funeral service at the house on Friday afternoon at two o’clock.
The surviving family consists of a widow and one daughter, Mrs. 0. N. HOOD, of this place. Of his eight brothers and sisters but two are left - Daniel F. HUNT who lies critically ill at his home near Ridgeway, and Mrs. John Henry MEARS.
Edwin GROAT, of Hudson, NY, came to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law, A. B. HUNT, and spent several days visiting friends in town.

We learn, with sorrow, of the death of Mrs. William HUNT, of Ridgeway, which occurred April 24th, leaving five small children and a home desolate. Mrs. Hunt was the eldest daughter of W. P. ALLEN, deceased, late of Millville, and resided here until her marriage some fifteen years since. During her sickness, and since her death, Mrs. ALLEN and her daughter have been absent from our place looking to the wants of the bereft family, leaving their own home without an occupant, thus casting a shade of lonely sadness over our entire village.

said it was all right. She exemplified in the highest degree christian fortitude and
patience. None knew her but to love her. No earthly friend could be more faithful,
none more unselfish -always thinking and planning,

most and have known her best will sadly miss her loving welcome and cheerful words of
advice and counsel. Her life was so pure, that it was well nigh perfect. She has gone
to her rest "Midst holy prayers and generous grief and consecrating
blessings. She was a valuable member of the Baptist Church, and in the Church and

In her youth she entered the service of Christ and united with the Congregational church of Millville. Dec. 25, 1835, she was married to Mr. R. F. HURD. They lived two years in Knowlesville, and twenty-seven years in Medina, both in Orleans Co.; and removed thence to this city fourteen years ago last Spring, while Corry was in its infancy.
She was the mother of eight children, six sons and two daughters. Four sons and one daughter, all residing in Corry are left, who with her husband mourn her departure to the better land, infinite gain to her, to those left behind a sad separation; for she was a true, loving wife, affectionate and faithful mother, and a sincere and prayerful Christian. After coming to Corry, she was a member of the Presbyterian church, till four years since, when she assisted in organizing the Congregational church, to which she gave the most self denying labors, and most earnest prayers of her last days; and the church deeply mourns her departure, feeling that a large vacancy is left. Yet they rejoice in her rich legacy of holy example and wrestling prayer.
During these four years, she was in failing health, and much of the time a great sufferer, yet always patient, no complaint, her spirit completely resigned to the will of her kind Father. She often said "The good Lord knows what is best for me." Her great burden was for her children, grandchildren, and Church. She had strong love for the house of God, continuing to attend, when scarcely able to sit up. For about eight weeks she had been very low. For a short time she seemed to gain. On Saturday she was taken much worse and sunk rapidly. Her end was peace. Her last words were, "Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus. All is well." She was told that Jesus would be here very soon. She said, "Come quickly, Blessed Jesus." Afterward, when her children joined in singing her favorite hymn, "What a friend we have in Jesus," she joined faintly in two verses, and said, “That will do;” and after a pause said, "Sing the rest." Then after a little quiet waiting, she went to her home with Jesus.
(Note: We believe the city of Corry was/is located in Erie County, PA.)

Our community was surprised on Friday last to learn of the sudden death of our townsman, Seymour A. HURD, which occurred at 9:30 on the morning of that day. after a very brief but painful illness with acute peritonetis(sic). The dangerous nature of his sickness was not publicly known until within a few hours before his death. He was universally known and respected, having been in business in Yates nearly forty years, was for many years Town Clerk, and was thus intimately connected with public interests. As a member of the Town Board, all who have been associated with him will bear witness to his ability and genial, agreeable ways.
Deceased was the youngest of twelve children of the honored pioneer family of Isaac HURD, who made his home in this wilderness town in 1817. He was born in Yates, August 16, 1821, and though not a regular pioneer, knew something of life under difficulties in his early days. He was twice married -first to Mary 0. FROST, a sister of Mrs. Joseph SPAULDING, and daughter of Deacon FROST. She died twenty-one years ago, leaving a family of small children - four boys and one girl. Mr. HURD labored hard to educate his children and train them up for positions of honor and usefulness, and today they "rise up and call him blessed." The second companion is sister to Mr. Joseph SPAULDING, and on Sunday afternoon she joined with the five children in the last sad rites to the memory of a loving husband and a kind, indulgent father.
At the funeral we noticed an elegant floral pillow, arranged for the children,
inscribed with the impressive word, "Father." The offering, with its many tinted flowers,
its little wreath of ripened grain and the impressive inscription, speaks volumes.
The floral shoe, the gift of the ladies of Yates, was also an appropriate offering.
The community universally sympathize with the bereaved family, and are sad at the seeming
untimely death of a neighbor and friend.
B.
Yates, July 19, 1886.

It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of a pioneer resident of the town of Yates -Virgil HURD - whose age exceeded by several years that of any other resident of the town. This venerable man went to his final rest on Friday morning March 31st, 1899, at the advanced age of ninety-two years and three months.
The deceased was born in Newark, N.J., December 25th, 1806. He was a son of Isaac and Phebe HURD, and moved with his parents from New Jersey to Tompkins county, N. Y., and thence to what was then a wilderness, but now the town of Yates, in 1816. Mr. Hurd, the father, took up the first land, built the first house, and dug the first well north of Lyndonville, settling about half a mile north of what has since been the central four corners of the town. The deceased consequently experienced some of the hardships and privations of pioneer life in this then new wilderness country. He frequently entertained his friends by relating experiences of those pioneer days; but no event of his long life was dwelt upon with greater pride than the fact that he was one of the foremost workmen employed in 1848 in the construction of the first Suspension Bridge, at Niagara Falls, and was the second person to make the hazardous trip over on the cable used in the preliminary work.
He was remarkably active during the later years of his life, retaining his mental and physical facilities to a surprising degree until within a short time previous to his death. An enthusiastic Republican from the organization of that party, he never failed to attend political meetings and to vote, and took pride in casting his last Presidential ballot for McKinley.
Mr. HURD was never married. He was the third of twelve children, of whom one sister - Mrs. Nancy C. BIDLEMAN, aged eighty-six - and one brother - Richmond HURD, aged eighty-four years - survive, and reside in the same house where their parents died - the father in 1848, the mother in 1868, the latter aged ninety-two years and seven months.
The funeral occurred at the residence on Sunday afternoon last, Rev. S. A. Freeman, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Lyndonville, officiating. And thus the oldest inhabitant of Yates, if not of Orleans county, is gone - over ninety-two years a pilgrim of earth, eighty-two years a resident of the town. Universally esteemed and highly respected, he has passed to his reward, thus severing another link of the chain which binds us to that early time of our history which will soon be a thing of memory only.
The following article was in the same newspaper as above:
Yates: A large number of friends and neighbors assembled at the residence on Sunday afternoon last to attend the last sad rites over the remains of our venerable deceased townsman, Virgil HURD. Among the relatives present were Dr. S. W. HURD, of Lockport; Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. HURD and C. F. HIRD, of Medina; Mrs. Charles CRAMER and Miss Mary GODLEY, of Rochester. Rev. S. A. Freeman’s sympathetic remarks regarding the deceased pioneer and his faithful work, and the esteem in which he was held, was listened to with interest.
