One of Albion's Oldest Merchants Completes His Labors and Enters Into Rest.
In the death of John NORMILE, which occurred on the evening of July 2d.
at his home on West State street, Albion loses one of its oldest merchants
and best citizens. He was born in Ireland in 1833 and came to Albion while
a boy, working on a farm until 1862, when he went to the front with the
17th New York Battery. When the war was ended he returned to Albion, and
in 1867 he united with two of his Battery comrades, Thomas Hale and
Wm. H. Nichols, in establishing the grocery business on East Bank street
long conducted by them, and which, after the death of Mr. Hale and the
retirement of Mr. Nichols, was continued by Mr. Normile alone up to the
time of his death. He had suffered from rheumatism and an affection of
the heart for several years, but he had been confined to his home for
only a few months. The funeral was held from St. Joseph's church on Friday
and was conducted by Rev. Francis Sullivan, who paid just tribute to the
life of the deceased. During the hour of the funeral all the stores in
town were closed and the large attendance at the church was an impressive
and eloquent testimonial to the high character of a fellow man of real
worth.
The active bearers were Thos. A. Kirby, Lewis Galarneau, Nicholas Beyhan,
Jos. Praemassing, Emory Root, M. J. Finn.
The honorary bearers were W. H. Nichols, L. F. Zimmerman, D. S. Frisbie,
John B. Crandall, H. J. Bailey, S. N. Tanner.
Mr. NORMILE was in many ways a model man. Curious by nature, he gave freely to charity, and yet never permitted his benefactions to be blazoned to the world. He possessed a bright and cheerful disposition and refused to listen to the wails of the pessimist. Even when tortured at times by disease, and scarcely able to use his limbs without pain, no complaints came from his lips. He enjoyed a hearty laugh and found pleasure in adding to the happiness of others in any way that he might. As a business man he was the soul of honor and highest integrity, and the patrons of the old store feel that they have sustained a personal loss in his death. In his relations to the life of the town he was a man of enterprise and progress and was always ready to do his share for the betterment of the community. He was prominently identified with St. Joseph's church and met his responsibilities there in a manly and generous way.
He is survived by his wife and one sister, Mrs. Kate LYNCH of Rochester, to whom the sympathy of many friends is extended in their time of sorrow.

Youth, 23, Dies in Crash
W.N.Y. highway tragedies struck 'close to home' for the Medina area over the week end, and
the most severe of the auto crashes brought death to a 23-year-old Millville youth, Douglas
NUDD, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison NUDD.
Dangerous speed was given as the cause of the accident in which NUDD died, which occurred
early Sunday morning on Route 77, about 12 miles west of Batavia and four miles south of
Basom. Genesee County Deputy Sheriff Merton Johns estimated the speed of Nudd's car as
'better than 100 miles per hour'. The machine left the road and hit a tree.
Dr. S. L. McLouth of Corfu, a Genesee County coroner, pronounced the youth dead at the scene. He attributed death to a broken neck and a fracture at the base of the skull. McLouth issued a certificate of accidental death. Deputy Johns was in pursuit of the speeding vehicle at the time of the accident but said he never was able to get closer that half a mile to the NUDD car. The deputy, en route home from another investigation, said NUDD’s southbound car went by him in the opposite direction in the hamlet of Basom at a speed he estimated at 100-miles-an-hour. The time was a few minutes past midnight. Noting the Alabama license plate, Johns turned around and began pursuit. The deputy said his patrol car was traveling 'over 100 miles an hour' but that he was unable to gain on the NUDD car.
At a point 900 feet north of Route 77 bridge over the Thruway, and 4 miles south of Basom, the Nudd car went off the west side of the highway at a curve, skidding sideways for several hundred feet betore slamming into a tree and flipping over. Johns measured the distance of the skidding car at 500 feet from the point where it left the road.
The victim was thrown another 100 feet into a field from the point where the demolished 1959 model car came to a halt. Johns said he had difficulty locating the body because of the darkness and the distance the victim was thrown from the car. Scene of the crash is about half a mile north of the busy intersection of Route 77 and Route 5 a corner known as Brick House Corners.
The victim had been discharged from the Army in May accounting for the Alabama license plates on his car. Serving two years in Army Ordnance Corps, he had been stationed at Huntsville, Alabama, from which place he was discharged on May 21. He was employed by the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors at Lockport. He was a member ot the First Presbyterian Church of Medina, the Lockport Power Squadron and the Orleans 4-H Senior Council. He was a graduate of Medina High School.
Born in Medina June 29, 1935, his parents who survive are Harrison and Jane WATERSON NUDD, and also his grandmother, Mrs. Cora WATERSON of Oak Orchard and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends may call at Barnes-Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St., from where services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev.
