The death of Miss Anna S. O’BRIEN occurred at her home on South Main street at an early hour Saturday morning, January 21, following an illness of one week. Miss O’BRIEN was born in Medina and came to Holley in 1881 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy O’BRIEN. Miss O’BRIEN was a kind friend and neighbor and devoted to the charitable and benevolent work of the community. She was Vice Chairman of the Holley chapter of the Red Cross from its organization and also of the Civilian Relief Committee, a local organization appointed to disburse funds for the sick and needy. Her wise counsel will be sadly missed by her associates.
She is survived by twelve nephews and nieces, Timothy, Francis, Edward, Margaret and Carmelita O’BRIEN of Holley, William D. O’BRIEN of New York, Mrs. T. R. KENNEDY and Miss Mae O’BRIEN, of Rochester, Mrs. Harry LANE of Brockport, Miss Corinne RYAN, James and Edward RYAN of Medina. James P. O’BRIEN died at his home on Jackson street this morning at about 8 o'clock. He had been in poor health for several years. He spent the winter of '93 in California in the hope of benefit from the change of climate and had returned a few weeks ago from a trip in the South taken with a similar purpose. Since then he had failed steadily, from day to day it being evident that the dread disease consumption had a firm hold upon him, and that the end was only a question of time. It came sooner than was expected, however, for he kept about and was able to walk down town until about a week ago, and on Tuesday of this week was out riding.
Mr. O’BRIEN was about 29 years old, and was universally popular. He was courteous and gentlemanly to all, with the genuine courtesy that comes from the heart and knows no distinction of rank or fortune. Had not ill-health prevented his abilities and attractive qualities would have given him a prominent place in the community. Mr. O’BRIEN had been an ardent and earnest adherent of the democratic party, and was recently appointed postmaster of this village. The appointment with many others was hung up in the senate for some time, owing to political complications, but was confirmed yesterday.
Mr. O’BRIEN leaves an aged mother and several brothers and sisters to mourn his early death, which will also cause deep regret and sense of loss throughout the community. The funeral will be held Saturday. The remains will be taken to Medina, the former home of the family, on the morning train and the funeral held at the Catholic church in Medina on arrival. The interment will be in the family lot in the Catholic cemetery at Medina.

The funeral of the late James P. O’BRIEN, whose death was announced in the last issue of the Standard, was held from St. Mary’s Catholic church in this place at 9 o’clock last Saturday morning. The business places of the village were closed during the funeral and the immense attendance was a significent evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held by the entire community. The remains were escorted to the church by a large procession of men on foot, the Celtic Club of Medina, of which Mr. O’BRIEN was a member, attending the hearse. At the church solemn high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Leddy, Rev. John Ryan, of Lockport, officiated as deacon and Rev. P. Mullaney, of Lewiston, as subdeacon. Other clergymen present and assisting in the service were Rev. Father Tully, of Niagara University, Rev. James Roche, of Middleport, Rev. Wm. McNab, of Medina, Rev. Frank Weber of Buffalo.
Father Leddy made a brief address, in which an appreciative tribute was paid to the many admirable qualities of heart and mind which had made Mr. O’Brien so highly esteemed, and his death so deeply deplored.
After the funeral ceremony was ended the procession was reformed and proceeded to the station, to take the 11:12 train for Medina, where the body was to be interred. A large number of the friends of Mr. O’BRIEN and family went to Medina, with the funeral party to pay the last tribute of regard by following the body to the grave.

William M. O’BRIEN one of the most prominent and well known quarry owners of Orleans county, died suddenly at his home on Main street in this village Sunday night. Mr. O’BRIEN had been in poor health for some time, though able to be about and attend to his business affairs. He was apparently as well as usual Sunday, attending church in the forenoon. Early in the evening he went down street and soon after was stricken with heart failure, and expired soon after being taken to his home.
William O’BRIEN was born in Medina April 23, 1856. His father, Timothy O’BRIEN, engaged in the quarry business, first in Medina, and later operated a quarry at Brockville. In 1881 he opened the quarry east of this village, which in a few years developed into one of the most extensive and profitable quarry enterprises in the county. His sons William and Richard were actively associated with him in the business, and after his death the business was continued by the estate under the firm name of O’Brien & Co., William O’BRIEN being the superintendent. When the syndicate was organized which absorbed the leading quarry interests of the county he was elected vice-president of the company, and held the same position in the company which succeeded the original organization. For several years he has also operated another quarry of his own.
Jan. 15, 1890, Mr. O'Brien married Miss Charlotte BODKIN who survives him, together with five children, Timothy James, Simon Francis, Edward John, Margaret Agnes, and Anna Carmalita. He also leaves one brother, Richard O’BRIEN, of this village; and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret RYAN, of Albion; Sister Mary of Charity, of Ogdensburgh, and Anastasia O’BRIEN, of this village.
Mr. O’BRIEN was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church of this village, and had been a trustee of the church for a number of years. He had served as a member of the village board of trustees two terms. His funeral was held from St. Mary’s Catholic church in this village yesterday morning. Solemn High mass was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. Father McCarthy, assisted by Rev. Father Noonan of Buffalo, Rev. Father Sullivan of Albion, and Rev. Father Ryan of Buffalo. Rev. Father Noonan a former pastor at St. Mary’s, preached the sermon.
The Knights of Columbus and the Elks from Medina were present in a body. The active bearers were: James Oliver, New York City, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Welch, Medina; John Murphy, John Crehan, Lewis Whitney, William Sweeney and William McCarthy of Holley. The eight honorary bearers were from the Elks and Knights of Columbus. The floral offerings were beautiful and of the most elaborate designs. The interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

John O'CONNELL, aged about twenty-three years died at the home of his mother north of Medina last night.
Young O'CONNELL was injured in a terible manner nearly two weeks ago. He was working with another man in a piece of woods on the Portage Road, felling trees. A tree had been cut and sawed to fall in a certain direction, and all was apparently safe. Just as the great tree began to topple to its fall, the wind shifted and a terrific gust struck the top, swaying the tree in an entirely different direction and twisting so that there was no escape for the young man who was standing near the bottom. He was caught between the trunk of the tree and the stump and terribly crushed. Four ribs were fractured, his shoulder was broken, he was terribly bruised all over his body and suffered internal injuries. He lingered in great agony until last night when death resulted. O'CONNELL was a popular young man and his untimely death is deeply deplored.
He leaves his mother (Mary CARROLL), one brother and six sisters.

Yesterday, at her home on West Center street, occurred the death of Mrs. Catherine O’GRADY, widow of the late Patrick O’GRADY, after a week’s illness of a complication of rheumatism and kidney trouble. The deceased was seventy-four years of age, and for more than half a century had resided in the house in which she died. During all that time she had seen Medina grow from a small village to its present size. She had seen every business place on Main street replaced by the present structures, and when she moved into her West Center street residence she was living on the outskirts of the town.
Although Mrs. O’GRADY had been an invalid for many years, yet her faculties were excellent to the last. Only a few days ago she was out driving, and feeling quite well. She always kept abreast of the times, maintaining a keen interest in charitable and church work, and doing much to make the community in which she lived the better because of her having lived in it. In spite of her feeble health, she was always genial, kind-hearted and bore her ailments with fortitude. She was highly respected in the village, and in the western portion, where she was well known, she had many firm friends who will mourn her demise, most of whom had oft times been made recipients of her acts of kindness.
The deceased leaves two sons, William P. O’GRADY, of this place, and Thomas O’GRADY, of Buffalo, and one daughter, Miss Delia O’GRADY, of Medina. The funeral will be held from St. Mary’s church Saturday morning at nine o‘clock.

DROWNED IN THE CANAL
The body of Cornelius KEEFE (O'KEEFE) was found in the canal near the Holloway
bridge about seven o'clock Saturday evening. The circumstances leading to
his death are somewhat shrouded in mystery. Deceased, who for the past
three years had been employed as a bartender at the Hart House, left the
hotel shortly after one o'clock Thursday afternoon, saying he was going to
take a bicycle ride and would return in an hour. When evening came and he
did not return his friends became alarmed, and the next day was spent in
trying to find some trace of him. It was finally learned that he had been
seen riding a wheel on the towpath near the aqueduct. As he did not return
on Saturday a search was made in the canal with the result of finding his
body as above stated.
While many theories are advanced as to how the unfortunate young man met his death, the most plausible one seems to be that as he was riding on the towpath his wheel struck a stone, and ran into the canal, carrying him with it. The body was taken to Holdredge's undertaking rooms, and dressed, after which it was removed to the home of his brother-in-law, John CROWLEY, on Church Street.
Deceased was twenty-eight years of age and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He is survived by his parents, two brothers -- John, of Buffalo, and Francis, of this place, and one sister, Mrs. John CROWLEY, of this place. The funeral was largely attended Monday morning at St. Mary's Church; interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
(Note: Cornelius KEEFE was the son of Cornelius and Mary MORGAN O'KEEFE. The O' and the last e were dropped at various times)

IN MEMORIAM
Anna M. OLMSTEAD died November 9, 1896, in the old homestead where she had lived for
upwards of three-quarters of a century, in the eighty-fourth year of her age. When a
mere child she came with her parents from the ancestral Connecticut home, and after four
years of residence in Genesee county found a new home in Albion in the year 1820.
The county which then had advanced little beyond a wilderness, she lived to see
transformed into a garden. Her maiden name was Anna M. SPENCER, and she married
David R. OLMSTEAD, by whom she had several children, all of whom died in infancy,
except Seymour (Truman Seymour OLMSTEAD), so well and honorably known in our community.
The married life was a happy one, and indeed no circle in which she was a prominent
figure could be otherwise. Her simple, thrifty habits bequeathed by her New England
parentage, her sympathetic, helpful spirit; her quiet and unostentatious manners,
charmed all who came within the radius of her influence:
And her eyes
An out door sign of all the warmth within,
Smiled with her lips.
She was pronounced and independent in her opinions, yet always tolerant toward those of
different convictions. In early life she adopted the Universalist faith, in which she
found strength, comfort and hope to the end. She lived to enjoy the great happiness of
holding grandchildren in her arms, and at last, as a shock of corn cometh in his
season, full of years and goodness was gathered unto her fathers.
(Interment in Mt. Albion Cemetery)
(Note: Anna was the daughter of Alban and Abigail GRISWALD SPENCER. The names of her children who died in infancy were William, Ebenezer and Omer.)
