JACOB PAGE (26 Dec 1805 – 5 Feb 1881)

Newspaper: The Medina Tribune; 10 Feb 1881
Surnames: PAGE, NASH, FIELD, PARSONS, CRANE, CLARK

Died, at his home in Barre, on Saturday, February 5th, 1881, after an illness of two weeks, Jacob PAGE, aged 75 years, one month and nine days. Mr. PAGE was born in Mifflin county, Pa., in 1805; removed with his parents in early boyhood to Lycoming county where he lived until 1826 when, with an elder brother he moved to Orleans Co., N.Y, where he has since resided. Was first married in 1829 to Miss Eliza NASH, who died in 1840, leaving him three children. His second wife, Miss Mary FIELD, died in 1856, leaving five children. In 1859 he married Miss Lucy FIELD who survives him.

Mr. PAGE was a farmer, and was generally known and highly respected by the old settlers of the county; an honest unpretentious man who lived a life of usefulness and has died loved and respected by all who knew him. He has lived to see all his children grow to man and womanhood, all married and settled except his youngest daughter, (Jennie) deceased. A.J. PAGE, the eldest son, lives at Reading, Mich., employed by a Chicago firm; his second son, Horace F., resides in California and has represented the Second Congressional District of his State for the past 10 years. His eldest daughter, widow of the late John C. PARSONS, is living near North Oakfield, NY; the second daughter, Mrs. Alonzo CRANE, lives near the old home; Mrs. Mark CLARK, the third daughter, resides at Pittsburgh, PA; George F., his third son, resides in Washington, D.C., and holds a responsible position in the Post Office Department; Oscar J., his fourth son, is a farmer residing near Knowlesville, N.Y. Thus he lived to see a large family grow to useful and respected members of society.

It became evident on Wednesday last that he was failing very fast, and his three absent sons were summoned to his bedside. Horace F. and George F. arrived from Washington, D. C. , Friday, at 3:30 a.m., only in time to receive the last recognition of their dying father, he becoming unconscious soon after their arrival. Thus surrounded by a devoted and loving wife and affectionate children he passed into that last dreamless sleep from which there is no awakening. A place has been made vacant around the family hearth, the father who breasted the storm of 75 years has succumbed at last and has been borne to his last resting place in the city of the dead, in sight of his home where he lived so long and loved so well. The winter winds will sing their mournful dirge and spring will come again, yet all will recollect how bright a light went out in the winter of life and how much hope was riven by one blow of the hand divine. Good friend, devoted husband, affectionate and loving father, “all hail and farewell.”

LAVINIA M. PARISH (1846 - 22 Jul 1899)

Newspaper: Medina Tribune; Thurs., 27 July 1899
Surnames: PARISH, STRATTON

On Saturday evening at six o’clock, Miss Lavinia M. PARISH quietly passed away. Her sudden going was a great shock to the entire village. She had been spending a few weeks in the mountains hoping to gain strength after months of severe suffering, but grew suddenly worse and was brought home Friday noon.

Miss Parish will be missed by a wide circle of acquaintances, for she has been prominent in business for many years as one of the firm of Parish & Stratton. From her girlhood she was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and has filled many places of trust in its work. She was ever a generous and sympathetic friend to the struggling and needy. Her literary tastes were of a high order and the Federations of Clubs, with which she was connected, greatly appreciated her talents. But the inner circle of intimate friends best understood what they have lost, a wise counselor, a loving helper, a spiritual guide, a true friend.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock, at her home on Park avenue, the Rev. Charles J. Beach officiating. The floral offerings, which filled the house, were the exquisite tokens of sympathy from hosts of friends. The emblems of purple and white were chosen because they were the colors of the two societies, The Order of King’s Daughters and The White Shield with which she was prominently associated and in which she was deeply interested. One brother, two sisters and life long friend and business partner remain to mourn her loss.

COL. JOHN PARKS (16 May 1816 - 25 March 1908)

Newspaper: The Medina Tribune; Thurs., 9 April 1908
Surnames: PARKS, SHISLER, WILLIAMSON, CHASE, McCARGO

Readers of the Tribune have already been acquainted with the fact that death at Rochester on March 25th removed one of Medina's former pioneer residents, Col. John PARKS, in the 92d year of his age. Col. PARKS' remains were brought to Medina and interred in the family lot at Boxwood Cemetery. The funeral services in Rochester were conducted by Myron Adams Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, and in Medina by the officers and members of Medina Lodge, 386, F. and A M. Col. PARKS' illness was of brief duration, although his health had been impaired since the death of his wife, Mary Catherine PARKS, in November, 1906, shortly after the celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary. The following brief sketch of Col. PARKS' life has been prepared for this paper:

Born May 16th, 1816, at Glenn, Montgomery county, N.Y., John PARKS came of sturdy American ancestry. His father was Jacob PARKS, a veteran of the war of 1812, and his mother, Rhoda WILLIAMSON PARKS. The latter died in Medina April 1st, 1880. As a boy, John PARKS lived on his father’s farm until seventeen years of age, when he began life as driver of a canal boat. A few years later he secured a boat of his own and became a packet captain. For more than a decade he followed the life of a boatman. At that time the Erie canal was in the prime of its importance as a highway from Albany to Buffalo.

The marriage of Mr. PARKS and Mary Catherine SHISLER took place November 8, 1841 at Little Falls, to which city Mr. PARKS had removed. From 1847 to 1849, Col. PARKS was assistant superintendent of the Erie canal. In 1852, he entered the employ of the Rochester, Niagara and Brockport railroad as advertising agent. He was next given the position of station agent at Niagara Falls and continued as such until the New York Central took possession of this road. A few years later he became ticket agent at Medina, but in the meantime, he served three years as a conductor on the Great Western Railway. During all these years he was in Medina more or less of his time, and was identified with the early history of this village. He removed here permanently in the early forties, and lived in the old Gillette house, corner of North and West avenues, and later occupied the old Bishop home on Park avenue. For a quarter of a century thereafter he made his home at the residence of his son-in-law, the late Henry H. CHASE, on West Center street. About nine years ago he removed to Rochester and purchased a home on Greeley street, where he died.

In 1862, Col. PARKS was elected Assemblyman from Orleans county, on the Republican ticket, and served with credit and ability in the State Legislature for one year. About this time his knowledge of the railroad business came to the attention of President Lincoln, who appointed him assistant quartermaster, with the rank of captain, and placed him in charge of all the military railroads in Kentucky, Tennessee and Eastern Mississippi, with headquarters at Memphis. He relieved Gen. Hulbert, and in a brief time his efficient service earned for him further promotion. From the President he received "for faithful and meritorious service" three more commissions, as major, lieutenant-colonel and colonel of volunteers. He continued in command, and following Lee's surrender, was placed in charge of all the railroads in the Confederate States. He was relieved of this command and mustered out in 1866, when he returned to Medina.

Colonel and Mrs. PARKS gave their only son, William M. PARKS, as a sacrifice to their country. This young man was enlisted at the age of 16 years in Colonel Peter A. Porter's famous fighting regiment, the old Eighth Heavy Artillery, and was made captain's clerk in Company M. While on the famous march to Cold Harbor(?), in which battle the regiment lost three fourths of its men in a bloody assault, during which Colonel Parker fell mortally wounded, Private PARKS was taken ill. He was sent to the hospital at Washington where he soon died. He occupies a grave in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia, opposite Washington.

After the war Colonel PARKS resumed railroading. He became superintendent of the Buffalo, Niagara Falls & Suspension Bridge Railroad and later was made general superintendent of the Titusville & Union Railroad. In 1871 he went to New York as general manager of the freight department of the Erie Railroad, and occupied that position three years. He was at the same time superintendent of the New Jersey Lighterage Company. He returned to Medina in 1874, since which time he has led a retired life.

Colonel PARKS joined the Grand Army of the Republic in its infancy and was past commander of Barnes Post, No. 91, now Hood Post, of Medina. On removing to Rochester he became a charter member of Myron H. Adams Mounted Post, of which he was junior vice-commander at the time of his death. He had attended twenty-two state encampments, at eighteen of which he was a delegate. He had attended eleven national encampments, at nine of which he was a delegate. He had been a member of the staff of the department commander for the past nineteen years, and a member of the staff of the national commander for nine years. He was one of the oldest, yet one of the most active Grand Army men in New York State. He was a member of Medina Lodge No. 336, F. and A. M., and retained his membership until his death. He took a keen interest in the village affairs. In the early days of this village he was a member of Neptune Engine Co. 3, and performed many deeds for the benefit of the village and county. He was a life long member of the Methodist church, in which faith he died.

The surviving relatives of Colonel PARKS are one daughter, Mrs. Frances E. CHASE, four grandchildren, Mrs. Mary A. McCARGO, William Parks CHASE, Dr. John Paton CHASE and Harry Archer CHASE, all of Rochester, and eight great grandchildren, Jean and Donald McCARGO, and Onalee, Thelma, Helen, John, Benjamin and Virginia CHASE.

Note: The obituary in the Medina Tribune also included a picture of Col. John Parks.

The fire alarm was sounded at 11:13 p.m. last night; firemen made desperate attempts to reach Father PEEL and his sister on the second floor. When they finally reached Father PEEL'S bed they brought the body down to the sanctuary of the church and before the high alter the last rites were administered. Grime-covered firemen, weeping parishioners and doleful priests, who gathered from many parts of the diocese, knelt and prayed.

Fire evidently originated in a short circuit in a radio on the second floor according to Fire Commissioner MASTERSON. "Flames mushroomed rapidly through the hallway and seven other rooms on the second floor, then swept down the stairway to the first floor", he said. He estimated damage at $20,000 to the 2½-story brick rectory and $8000 to its contents.

Father PEEL, who had been ill for several months but had celebrated midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, was in bed in his room. His sister had just taken lunch and a newspaper to his room when they smelled smoke. Both were trapped in the room when flames cut off possible escape down the stairway. "My brother was right behind me as we started toward a side window", said Miss PEEL. "I heard him fall but could not find him because of the smoke. I do not remember what happened then". Firemen found her at the window and carried her down a ladder, but shooting flames and thick smoke prevented them from re-entering the room. Directing hose lines into the room, they cleared the way in 20 minutes so they could reach Father PEEL, who was found on the floor a short distance from the window.

Father PEEL was born in Medina November 6, 1882, and the family resided at East Center Street. After preparing for the priesthood at Our Lady of the Angels' Seminary, Niagara University, he was ordained in Buffalo by the late Most Rev. Charles H. COLTON, on June 5, 1909.

One of the highlights of his career was his direction of the Catholic school system in the diocese, serving as superintendent of parochial schools for 18 and one-half years, in addition to carrying on his parish duties.

Surviving are three sisters, Alice, Mrs. Florence GODFREY and Mrs. Margaret PHILLIPS of Buffalo, and a brother, Joseph L. PEEL of Geneva.

The body is resting at the home of his sister, Mrs. GODFREY, 65 Englewood Avenue, until the funeral mass, the date of which will be announced later.

Multi-Unit Search Uncovers Local Youth’s Drowned Body
Medina Lad, 12, Dies in Glenwood Lake

One of the most spectacular combined search efforts in the recent history of the area took place here Saturday and Sunday as hundreds of men dragged the bottom of Glenwood Lake to retrieve the body of Dominic PELLEGRINO, 12, who drowned shortly before noon Saturday. There could be no hope for life or survival at the scene - only the grim search for the remains of the youngster who was one of two adrift in a small boat. In a mornent of fear at being adrift with a high wind and rough surface, the two had tried to swim ashore.

Dominic, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. John PELLEGRINO, 815 S. Main St., failed to make it to shore, apparently starting out first for the east shore, a long distance away. His companion, Daniel Thompson, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence J. Thompson of Maple Ridge Rd., was successful, but just barely made it to shallow ground and safety on the nearer shoreline.

While onlookers, vehicles and apparatus crowded three sides of the small man-made lake at the north edge of Medina, the boatloads of searchers patiently dragged the bottom directed by walkie-talkie radio from shore and using both eye-witness accounts of where the boy was last sighted and also photographs showing the contour of the bottom. Finally, Sunday afternoon at about 2:20, the word was quickly flashed across the surface of the water that one drag line had hooked the boy’s shirt and was raising the body. The boat contained Joseph Cardone at the motor, Louis Metz and Richard Rigerman on the lines and David Chiarolanza, 13, who had been an eye-witness to the drowning on Saturday. An amphibious 'duck' sent from Niagara County was on the water nearby and swung about to help retrieve the body.

A certificate of death by accidental drowning was issued an hour later by Dr. David Fraser of Lyndonville, coroner. Piecing together the facts in the incident, State Police and fire department officials learned that the dead boy had been in a cove at Glenwood Lake Saturday morning, in company with three friends. In the group were Dominic; the Thompson boy; the Chiarolanza boy, and Daniel Stefaniak, 13. All four are pupils at St. Mary’s Parochial School. Two of the boys reportedly had fishing tackle, and during the late morning, the PELLEGRINO and Thompson boys decided to drift a short ways offshore, using an unattended rowboat which they found in the cove and which had no oars.

About 100 to 120 feet out to the east of a neck of land known as the ‘point” on the south end of the lake, the boys realized they were drifting with a current and the surface of the lake was made rough by a strong wind. They reportedly had fears of being swept over the falls at the north end of the lake where the dam is situated, not aware that the construction of the dam would have prevented this from happening. The boys decided to swim for shore, and the young witnesses to the tragedy reported that Dominic, in a moment of panic, started in the wrong direction. The boys described him as a very good swimmer, but they said he disappeared from sight under the water. When the Thompson boy got near shallow territory, young Stefaniak reportedly waded out to grab his arm and help him ashore.

The PELLEGRINO boy was born in Medina, the son of Jack and Carmella NAVARRA PELLEGRINO, formerly of Albion. The boy was active in sports and was a member of a Junior League team in baseball here last summer. Surviving besides his parents are twin sisters, Joan and Annette at home, his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent NAVARRA of Albion and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dominic PELLEGRINO of Buffalo, also several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A prayer service will be held Thursday from his home 815 South Main Street, Medina, at 9 a.m. and a funeral mass at 9:30 from Saint Mary’s Church. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

In talking with the Thompson boy’s father, police learned that the boys had gone fishing at about 8 or 9 a.m. and that Mr. Thompson had visited the lake at mid-morning to see if they were there. He failed to spot them, and assumed they had changed their minds in favor of other plans. When the Thompson youth was safely ashore, the boys ran quickly to a nearby house to phone firemen and report the tragedy. First on the scene were local firemen Frank Eppolito and David Lampo, followed closely in another vehicle by Fire Chief Ralph Whiting. State Police and Sheriff’s Dept. men, volunteer fireman and emergency crews from all over three counties joined other volunteers in the search with as many as 20 boats on the water at one tune. The search was called off at darkness Saturday and resumed at dawn on Sunday. Skin divers were standing by all times, but only dove once or twice to check underwater current. They reported that visibility in the lake was poor. Photographs taken some years ago when the lake was drained for power stations proved of value and showed the wide variance in the contour of the lake bottom. Glenwood Lake was widened from the creek and contains pockets said to be as deep as 60 feet.

PETERSON

JOHN WESLEY PETERSON (abt 1847 - 25 Oct 1927)

Newspaper: Rochester New York Democrat Chronicle, Oct 26, 1927

BORN A SLAVE, FORMER ALBION MAN, 80, DIES.
Wesley PETERSON Will Be Buried To-Day; Had Many Friends

Albion, Oct. 26 - (Special) - Wesley PETERSON, negro, believed to be about 80 years old, died yesterday in Detroit and will be buried here tomorrow.

For nearly sixty years, PETERSON had been a well-known and well-liked character in Albion, having been brought here about 1868 when a young man by Abijah Colburn, an Albion resident who had been wintering in the South. PETERSON was born a slave near Petersburg, Va., but it is said he was about 21 years old when he came here and went to work in Colburn's lumber yard where he fired the saw-mill boiler.

Many older residents of the village can recall spending their childhood days watching him at his fire in which he used the wood shavings as fuel. On one occasion, about fifty years ago, it is said that in a thunderstorm, lightning struck the smokestack of the boiler, and coursing to the ground it knocked Peterson unconscious and set fire to the lumber plant, damaging it badly. He was dragged from danger and soon recovered, none the worse for that experience.

In later years, PETERSON had worked in Buffalo and other cities but he lived here most of his life and served as sexton of a local church. He had owned more than one property in the village and later a farm just outside Albion. His wife died here six months ago and since then he had gone to live with her nieces in Detroit, having no blood relatives of his own so far as known here.

The body is expected to arrive here shortly before noon to-morrow. Burial in Mount Albion Cemetery."

PHELPS

CHARLES PHELPS (21 Oct 1844 - 21 Mar 1915)
MARGARET WOLCOTT (1870 - 21 Mar 1915)

Newspaper: The Medina Tribune; Thurs., 25 March 1915

BRUTALLY MURDERED.
Charles PHELPS and Miss Margaret WOLCOTT Shot to Death in Their House Near West Shelby - No Clue to the Murderer Yet Discovered

A most brutal crime was committed near West Shelby on Sunday night last when two people were murdered evidently for the sole motive of robbery. Miss Margaret WOLCOTT, aged forty-five years, housekeeper for Charles B. PHELPS, a wealthy farmer, aged seventy years, was killed as the result of a bullet wound in her left side, and her employer received mortal wounds, resulting in his remaining unconscious until his death during the day following at the Medina Hospital.

The most commonly accepted theory is that the robber stopped at the Phelps farmhouse on the West Shelby road, about 11 :30 Sunday night and going to the kitchen door, knocked for admittance. It is evident that Mr. PHELPS got up, lighted a lamp, setting it on the kitchen table and unlocked the door, for the door showed no indications of having been forced and was partially open when the tragedy was discovered, and that upon opening the door he was shot, the bullet passing into the left chest.

It is believed that Mr. PHELPS' housekeeper, Miss WOLCOTT, was aroused by the report of the revolver and rushed through the kitchen and out of the house through the open kitchen door in her night clothing and that as she ran, evidently intending to give an alarm, the man fired at her through the glass in the kitchen door, which had been partly closed by Miss WOLCOTT as she ran out. The bullet struck her under the left arm, passing nearly through the lady. She managed to cross the road to the front steps of their tenant house, where her body was found by Charles Stelo in the morning. Miss WOLCOTT had evidently died just after she reached the steps of the house, for the condition of the body showed that she had been dead for several hours when found.

The robber ransacked Mr. PHELPS' bedroom bureau, but did not disturb anything else in his search for money that PHELPS was reported to keep about the house. After searching the bureau, the robber left by the rear door and in doing so had to step over PHELPS' body and his tracks leading to the road were plain in the light snow that had fallen early in the night.

Mr. and Mrs. Stelo, who reside on the opposite side of the road were awakened shortly before midnight by a noise, but were unable to locate it and returned to bed without investigating. Monday morning about 6 o’clock, as Mr. Stelo was coming out of his house, he saw Miss WOLCOTT's body lying beside the front steps. Stopping only long enough to see that she was dead, he rushed across the road to the Phelps home and found the rear door open and the light still burning on the table. On the floor directly in front of the door was the body of Mr. Phelps. He was unconscious. Rushing to the neighbors, Mr. Stelo summoned help and Dr. Eckerson of Shelby and Dr. Munson and Dr. Rogan of Medina were called.

There was no evidence of a struggle in the kitchen and evidently the robber shot Mr. PHELPS as soon as he opened the door, without giving him a chance to defend himself. Mr. PHELPS was a well-to-do and respected farmer of West Shelby and had lived on his farm for many years. He was about 70 years old. The only motive that seems possible is that of robbery.

Miss WOLCOTT was about 49 years old and had been housekeeper for Mr. PHELPS for the last five years. Mr. PHELPS was unmarried and is survived by a brother, Lewis PHELPS of Kibby, Mich., and a nephew, Melvin JENKINS, who lives on the adjoining farm. Miss WOLCOTT is survived by a sister, who lives at Ripley.

Sheriff Bartlett and assistants were promptly on duty Monday morning, but with the only clue to the tragedy, the footprints of the perpetrator, it has been difficult to trace any clue to his identity. A blood hound owned by F. J. Scobbell, of Oneida, was set on the trail Monday evening and again on Tuesday, but nothing resulted therefore. Theories have been advance that the villain may have been one of a number of hoboes employed by Phelps last year, and may have known that it was his practice to keep considerable money on his person and in the house, being his own banker. Detectives will continue to make every possible effort to clear up the mystery.

A double funeral was held for the two victims at the West Shelby Methodist Church yesterday afternoon, Rev. Victor H. Harding officiating. The body of Mr. PHELPS was buried in West Shelby and that of Miss WOLCOTT was taken to Wheatville. Coroner Munson will hold an inquest on the case at village hall, Medina, Friday, at ten o’clock a.m.

STIELOW found guilty of murdering Charles PHELPS and his housekeeper and sentenced to death in the electric chair. Nelson GREEN pleads guilty to second degree murder in the same case and is sentenced to life imprisonment." Charles STIELOW was the occupant of Mr. PHELP's tenant house, referred to as Charles STILO in the obit.)

(NOTE: Two years later Governor Whitman commuted Charles STIELOW's and Nelson GREEN's sentences and they were released from prison after new evidence cleared them both. A month later another man confessed to the murders and was convicted.)

Howard PHILLIPS, Native Of Medina, Killed When Private Plane Crashes In Berkshires
Howard PHILLIPS, 41, a native of Medina, and more recently a resident of Needham, Mass., a suburb of Boston, died Sunday evening when his private plane crashed against a hill in the Berkshire Mountains, two miles east of Petersburg, Rensselaer County, N.Y. Mr. PHILLIPS was returning from Medina to his home in Massachusetts when the crash happened.

Leaving his home last Friday to call on his wife in St. Louis, Missouri, who had gone earlier in the week to that city to visit. Mr. PHILLIPS landed at the Medina Airport Friday afternoon and because of unfavorable weather conditions decided to spend the night here with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy J. SKINNER. As the weather did not improve over the week-end he remained here in Medina until Sunday, abandoning his contemplated trip to St. Louis. He left Medina Airport at approximately 11 a. m. Sunday and after landing in Rochester to check weather conditions, he decided to continue the trip although the reports were not too favorable. It is believed that the crash came because of a mist which obscured the hills in Eastern New York. His plane and body were not discovered until sometime Monday. Police searched the wooded mountainside near the wreckage on the theory that the plane, a new two-seater Cessa(sic) cabin plane, might have been carrying two persons.

Mr. PHILLIPS was born in Medina. His parents were the late Alonzo Gardner and Harriett SKINNER PHILLIPS. He was educated in Medina schools and was a graduate of Princton University. He resided in Medina for a number of years where he was identified with the Empire Couch Company of which his father was one of the founders. He left Medina for Pittsburgh, later going to St. Louis and more recently making his home in New England. He was associated with the Walworth Company of Boston.

He is survived by his widow, Martha, and three sons, Marshall, Howard, Jr., and William; his aunt and uncle in Medina and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the home of his wife's sister, Mrs. J. E. GOOEREDS, 1224 Farragut Street, Pittsburgh.

Newspaper: Medina Daily Journal, 1/15/1917
Surnames: PHILLIPS, BALCOM, COMSTOCK, SMITH

Holley, Jan. 14. - The death of Marcus H. PHILLIPS, one of the oldest residents of Orleans county, occurred in his home in Hulburton at an early hour Saturday morning. He had been in failing health for the past two years, but suffered a stroke of paralysis December 26th from which he never rallied. He was born in Barre, Orleans county, January 23, 1829, where he lived until 1851, moving from there to Hulburton with his parents to his present farm where he had since given largely of his time and attention. While maintaining the interests of an agricultural life, he had been personally interested in the quarry business of this section.

He was educated in the common schools of Barre, in the Albion Academy and in the Caryville Collegiate Seminary at Oakfield, Genesee county. He had an unusually brilliant intellect which made him a power both politically and in the community in which he lived. Few men in Western New York have more thoroughly identified themselves with their immediate community than has Mr. PHILLIPS. From 1860? to 1869 he was engaged in the mercantile trade and during that period and previously carried on an extensive produce business.

Politically Mr. PHILLIPS was especially active, holding numerous responsible positions. He was identified in the councils of the Republican party and a recognized leader. In 1885 he was elected superintendent of schools of Murray and was re-elected in 1860. In 1863 he entered upon the duties of school commissioner, of Orleans county. In 1871 he was elected clerk of the county and re-elected for a second term. In 1880 and 1881, Mr. PHILLIPS represented his Assembly district in the state Legislature and in this capacity attained distinction, serving as chairman of subcommittee of the whole and as a member of the Committee of Ways and Means. In 1887 and 1888 he was a member of the Republican State Committee, and during President Harrison’s administration was deputy collector of internal revenue, which office he resigned for prospects of a senatorial nomnination. His political career was characterized by an honest purpose, a thorough knowlege of events and an honorable ambition.

On November 14, 1858, he married Julia E. BALCOM, of Murray, besides whom he leaves three children, Clara A., wife of A. Allen COMSTOCK, of Carlton; Mrs. Jennie P. SMITH, and Arthur H., of Hulburton, and five grandsons. The eldest son, John M., died a few years ago. Mr. and Mrs. PHILLIPS celebrated their golden wedding November 14, 1903, when they entertained a large number of relatives and friends. At the time of his death, he was trustee of the Hulburton M. E. Church.

PITTMAN

RICHARD PITTMAN (1852 - Dec 1885)

Newspaper: Medina Tribune, Thurs., 25 March 1886
Surnames: PITTMAN, SHELDON

THE BODY OF RICHARD PITTMAN, OF LYNDONVILLE, FOUND IN THE CANAL -
SUPPOSED TO HAVE RUN AWAY - WAS IT A CASE OF SUICIDE?

As a party of men were returning home from church on Sunday they discovered, near Hastings Bridge, east of Medina, the body of an unknown man floating in the canal. Coroner Munson was notified, who had the body removed to Mahar Bros. undertaking rooms. A jury was impanelled forthwith and an inquest revealed the fact that the deceased was Richard PITTMAN, of Lyndonville. The body was very much decomposed, almost beyond recognition, and had the appearance of having been in the water all winter. From papers found upon his person the coroner was given a clue to his identity, which was afterwards proven by witnesses who knew the deceased.

Several witnesses were sworn, but no evidence was adduced to prove how the deceased met his death. The jury thereupon tendered the following verdict: "We find that the said Richard Pittman came to his death from accidental drowning, in the Erie Canal, sometime during the latter part of December, 1885."
"George W. Frary, foreman, John M. Smith, George R. McDonald, H. H. Huette, Frank J. Kearney, W. H. Munson, George E. Allen."

The verdict was accepted by the coroner and the jury discharged. A dispatch was sent to the wife of the deceased who now resides in Eagleville, O., and the body was buried in the Potter's field in Boxwood Cemetery. (error - see below)

About a year and a half ago Richard PITTMAN married a well-to-do widow, named Martha SHELDON, who owned a valuable farm near Lyndonville. They lived together until last fall, when, owing to some trouble, it is said, Pittman left his wife and has not since been heard from. It was supposed he had deserted her and had gone west, but the sequel proves that he either committed suicide or accidentally fell into the canal when intoxicated, in which condition he was seen in Medina in December last.

During his stay there (three months) he contracted the billious fever, and after having been under medical treatment for two weeks, so far recovered his health as to return home. From anxiety in returning, fatigue and exposure, he relapsed; which, combined with the imflammatory rheumatism, caused his death.

As a scholar he had but few equals and evidently had his eye on a high mark in the lite rary world.- From the common school he went to Yates Academy, in which he made good proficiency and gained the unqualified approbation of the Principal; thence to Union College, Schenectady, where he won the highest honors-as a scholar, a moralist, and a gentleman-of the Faculty, the venerable Dr. Nott(?) standing at its head. As a teacher of common schools he ranked with the first in that profession. As a son, he was tender, affectionate and dutiful. As a man, he was the picture of health, of perfect symmetry, of high aspirations, noble purposes and firm resolves, of whom any parent or friend might justly feel proud. As a husband (he was married to Miss ____, 7th day of October last) he was kind, affectionate, and true in his solemn marriage vows. In his death, his heart-stricken father and mother have parted with a good son, his only sister and brother with a kind brother, his young and heart bleeding wife with an affectionate husband, and this dark world with a bright star promising to have been one of the first magnitude.

Funeral services were held on the 20th, conducted by Rev. John McKuen assisted by Rev. Hiram May.-An appropriate discourse was given, founded upon Psalms, lxxx1x-48 (Psalms 89-48): “What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death?”. Services were attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors who sympathized deeply with the bereaved. We thought, as we gazed on the face of the dead, “How vain are all things here below.” Long will the departed, the noble youth, live in the memory of surviving friends. Peace to his slumbering dust, and Heaven to his soul! “Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the day of life is fled, Then with joy in Heaven to greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed.” Rev. Samuel Salsbury.
