Newspaper: Medina Daily Journal, Thurs., July 14, 1949
Surnames: QUINTERN

A 12-year-old boy, Herbert QUINTERN of Eagle Harbor was killed almost instantly yesterday afternoon when the barrel of a 12 gauge shotgun fired by a playmate David GRIMBLE, 14 exploded, causing a one-inch fragment of the barrel to severe the victims jugular vein.

According to the Orleans County Sheriffs Department, which investigated, the two boys were playing with the gun near the rear of the Grimble residence on the First Lane Rd. in Eagle Harbor, and were firing at a target. A next door neighbor Mrs. Charles CHICK heard the gun fired and soon afterward heard the screams of the two boys. Upon investigation, she saw that the QUINTERN boy was injured and bleeding she contacted the Sheriff. He summoned medical assistance. Although they did not witness the tragedy, Mrs. Chick’s father Arnold LICHT Sr. and her brother Arnold, who also lives nearby arrived soon after the accident, and found the Grimble boy trying to assist his injured playmate to Mrs. Chick’s residence.

They said the boy was bleeding profusely from the left side of his neck and was gasping for breath. He died before medical assistance came. The Grimble boy was not injured. Coroner John Ellis, who investigated, said he would issue a certificate of accidental death.

The boy is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Herbert QUINTERN, two sisters Alice 13, and Ruth, 9, a brother Norman, 2. The body was taken to the Merrill Funeral Home, 134 E. State St., where service will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p. m.
