Sudden Death by Accident
About four o'clock Tuesday afternoon Reuben REED, a well known and highly respected citizen
residing about two miles from Knowlesville, was found dead in the woods, having been killed instantly
by a tree which he was felling. Mr. REED was living with his brother-in-law, Mr. Alonzo SMITH, and
left the house about ten o'clock in the morning for the woods. As he did not return to dinner the
family became alarmed at his absence. Mr. SMITH went in search of him and found him lying dead,
killed by a blow from a limb of a tree, about eight feet long, which flew back as the tree was
falling, striking him on the head with such force as to smash his skull on one side, and throwing
him a distance of twelve feet. Assistance was speedily procured, and the lifeless body of the
unfortunate man brought home to his grief stricken wife and friends.

Suicide of an Albion Man.
Henry REYNOLDS, for many years associated with his brother Mark in the
New York Central station restaurant, in Albion, committed suicide on Friday by
shooting himself in the head with a 32-caliber revolver. The bullet entered the right
temple and came out through the left check severing a large blood vessel and probably
killing him almost instantly, as he was dead when found lying upon a couch.
Dr. Cochran was summoned, but found his services of no avail, and the coroner, who
was telephoned for, considered an inquest unnecessary. A correspondent says the deceased
had been for years addicted to the heavy use of laudanum and of late had been trying to
stop the habit. Whether he became crazed for the want of it, or whether he had taken a
dose which had upset his mind, cannot be known.
He leaves a wife (Azella J. JEWETT) and two children; one, a son (Walter), is studying medicine in New York, the other, a daughter (Helen), is a telegraph operator.

Edgar F. RICE was born at Kendall, November 19, 1842. At the age of 13 years he moved with his family to Niles, Michigan. On July 18th, 1862 at the age of 19 years, he enlisted for three years in Company 8, 17th Michigan Infantry at Detroit. He was mustered in August 26th, 1862. He was made First Sergeant which office he held with distinction throughout the Civil War.
He was wounded in the leg at Petersburg, in the side at Campbell’s Station, Tenn., and in the leg at Cold Harbor. He participated in 32 general engagements, among them being the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.
At the very beginning of the war, the 17th was plunged into the horrible realities of a pitched battle. On the crest of the mountainside behind stone walls, the enemy awaited the advance of the union forces. The orders came for the 17th to charge, when with wild cheers the regiment rushed through a storm of lead and drove the enemy from his stone defences and sent him retreating down the slope of the mountain. In the charge the 17th secured the title of the “Stone Wall Regiment” which clung to it as an honorable distinction during the war.
The 17th was engaged in the desperate battle of the Wilderness, was surrounded in dense woods by the heavy lines of the enemy and practically annihilated by the loss of nearly 100 killed and wounded and the same number taken prisoners. After this engagement the 17th practically lost its position in the brigade for want of numbers. Mr. RICE was honorably discharged and was mustered out June 3rd, 1865.
On December 25th, 1866, he married Amelia RUSSELL who died October 7th, 1922 at the completion of nearly 56 years of happy wedded life. Four children were born to this union, viz.: Mrs. Myrtie MARTIN of Henrietta, Mrs. Lizzie DRAKE of Albion, Mrs. Cora QUIETT of Wilson and Mrs. Della KINGSLEY of Wilson. There are three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mr. RICE died December 7th and the funeral was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank DRAKE, last Thursday, the Rev. E.A. Estey officiating. Burial at Mt. Albion Cemetery.

And still another has passed away from earth, and one that connects the long ago with the present, and one that resided many years in the vicinity of Millville, and whose history in Orleans county goes back to 1814. We refer to Mr. Enos RICE, who died at the house of his son in the town of Albion, April 27th, in this Centennial year, aged 86 years. Mr. RICE was born in Conway, Mass., in 1790. In his childhood he removed to Western New York, and grew to manhood in the town of Phelps, Ontario county.
In 1814 he came into the bounds of what is now Orleans county, and com- menced felling the forest on land next west of Artemas Loveland, in the now town of Albion. Subsequently he purchased and settled on the farm now owned by Homer Sherwood, near Millville, about which time he married
Alice BERRY, sister of Gardner BERRY, late of Shelby. Some thirty-five or forty years since he traded farms with Mr. Sherwood’s father, and returned to said town of Albion, where he spent the evening of life near what is known as “Porter’s Corners.” Mr. Rice was a man of many noble traits of character: honest, faithful and true in all his dealings and intercourse with others. By industry and economy he had secured more than a competency to render his declining years comfortable. He died honored and respected by all who knew him, as was evinced by the attendance at his funeral, many of whom had been companions of his younger days. Services were performed by Rev. Mr. Saxe, of Rochester.

We are called upon this week to chronicle a very painful event. Mrs. Samuel RICE, who resided on Church street, was burned so severely on Saturday afternoon, about three o'clock, that she died the following morning. Mrs. RICE was an elderly lady, mother of Mr. Samuel RICE, the grocer. She had been somewhat deranged for a long time, and on Saturday was left alone in the house for a few minutes. A girl who lives in an adjoining house noticed through a window that Mrs. RICE's clothing was ablaze, and that she was going towards a cistern pump in the house, evidently to get water with which to extinguish the fire. The girl gave the alarm in time to summon help, Mrs. RICE was cared for, as well as could be done, and the fire extinguished, which had caught in various parts of the room. She was found to be terribly burned; not blistered merely, but the flesh on the breast and bowels was burned to a crisp. The top griddles of the stove were found off, and the supposition is that she had been putting wood into it, and in bending over, her apron had caught on fire. Being deranged, she was probably unable to comprehend her situation exactly, or to use prompt means to save herself.
