CAROL VAIL (25 Dec 1892 - 23 Dec 1896)

Newspaper: Unknown
Surnames: VAIL, BENNINGER

Little Carol VAIL, the 4 yr. old child of Rev. and Mrs. Alfred T. VAIL, passed away at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry BENNINGER of Dexter N.Y. during the evening of 12/23. Mrs. VAIL and Carol, with the anticipation of a very happy Christmas, left Medina 12/14. Preparations were kindly and generously made at the grandparents home to make it a joyful occasion, especially for Carol, as that day was not only Christmas but also her 4th birthday. She spent a most happy week there, feeling perfectly well and anticipating her first Christmas at grandma's full of joy. The father went to join them on Mon. 12/21 and on his arrival found that his little girl was somewhat indisposed, so much so that she very indifferently greeted her papa. Nothing more serious than some indigestion, accompanied with some fever, was anticipated. After faithful care Tues. with considerable fever, she suddenly went into very hard spasm Tue. evening which developed into cerebral spinal meningitis. After everything was done that kind hands and special medical attendance could do the life of this precious "Christmas Carol" quietly slipped away. She was a very precocious child, with lovely little ways that make the loss doubly great. She had been taught the simple story of the "Lord Jesus" and she preferred to hear of him above all other little stories. She knew and loved the Saviour as truly as many older persons, and often spoke of Him to her friends in a way that will not be forgotten.

On her 4th Christmas birthday the funeral was held at the grandparents' home. The Presbyterian minister of the place, Rev. A.K.McNaughton, spoke a few words based on the scripture, "A little child shall lead them." It seemed that the time and circumstances of her death were so arranged that her little life spoke most effectively to all her friends. She was one of the bright gems that the Savior seemed to have wanted to take home to himself.
