ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE AT HOLLEY.
From the Holley Standard of Thursday last: Temporarily insane over the fact
that his former sweetheart had rejected him and married another
man, this morning about 8 o’clock, George WEAKLY, of Philadelphia, Pa., attempted to
murder Mrs. F. K. DILMORE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. MUNRO, of this vlllage, and after
firing two shots from a new 38 calibre revolver at her turned the weapon upon himself
and pressing the gun against his head discharged it, the bullet entering his ear. He
fell unconscious and about an hour later death resulted from the wound. Mrs. DILMORE's
condition is considered precarious, but unless septic poisoning developes, it is thought
that she will recover.
About three years ago WEAKLY came to this village and was in the employ of the New York Telephone Company. While here he met Mrs. DILMORE, formerly Miss Laura MUNRO, and kept company with her for sometime. Later he moved away but has been here on a visit several times since. On June 12, last, Miss MUNRO was united in marriage to E. K. DILMORE, Superintendent of the Brockport-Holley Waterworks Company, of this village. Since their marriage Mr. and Mrs. DILMORE have resided at the home of the bride's parents.
WEAKLY heard of the marriage and the fact that his affections had been spurned so affected his mind that it is thought it became unbalanced. Early Sunday morning Mrs. DILMORE received a telephone call from Rochester from WEAKLY, saying that he was going to kill someone dear to her. On Monday morning she received a letter from him, again threatening to kill someone. Last evening Mr. and Mrs. MUNRO received a letter stating that he was going to Youngstown, Ohio, and directing that certain of his belongings be sent to that city.
(Note: Laura was born about 1893 and was the daughter of George Munro & Hattie Downey)

Mrs. Frankie WEAVER, of West Shelby, departed this life on Sunday morning, February 7th, 1904, aged about thirty-four years. She was for several years a victim of repeated attacks of la grippe, which resulted in tuberculosis, and although every effort possible was made to save her, her devoted friends were compelled to yield the unequal contest. She was greatly beloved and will be sorely missed, not alone in the home, but in the Christian Church and its choir, of which she and her husband were valued members, and in the large circle of devoted friends which she had won.
Her husband, a son and two daughters, with her father, mother, sister and brothers are left to sorrow over their loss, and to unite in testimony of her blessed memory. The funeral services were conducted in the Christian Church, by her pastor, who based his discourse upon, "Fear not for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine.’’ Isa., 43-1.

Herbert S. WEET Dies; Headed Schools Here 1911-33
Dr. Herbert Seeley WEET, who guided the Rochester public school system into national eminence, died yesterday afternoon (Aug. 30, 1953) in Strong Memorial Hospital after a three-week illness. He was 82.
Dr. WEET, who sometimes claimed he got into teaching by accident after taking a teachers examination "for the fun of it," rose to be a national authority on public education. He was superintendent of Rochester schools from 1911 to 1933—the period of greatest educational development in the city.
Dr. WEET pioneered in Rochester in the use of school psychologists and visiting teachers, of special education programs for crippled children and of many other advanced educational techniques years before they became standard practice in other parts of the state and nation.
Born in Shelby, Orleans County, on Feb. 23, 1871, the son of Elroy Sabin WEET and the former Jane SMITH, Dr. WEET came into eminence in the field of education "through the ranks". He taught rural schools in Orleans County from 1889 to 1895—even before earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1899 and his UR Master’s in 1901.
After that he became principal of the North Tonawanda High School and two years later came to Rochester to fill a similar position at the old Monroe Grammar School. From 1905 to 1910 he was principal of West High, where he earned the affection of his pupils to such an extent that "his boys"—among them many leading citizens, including his successor as superintendent, James M. Spinning—from time to time honored him at special reunions, the most recent in 1950.
On that occasion a group of them among them Worden Skinner and Francis (Midge) Carroll, recalled an episode of their school days which illustrates Dr. Weet’s fundamental understanding of young minds, one of the qualities which made him a truly great educator.
Almost 50 years ago, Skinner recalled, he and some others were pitching pennies behind the school during school hours. The back door opened and the principal casually strolled by. "Who’s winning?" he inquired amicably and kept right on going. The boys, red-faced, broke up their game in a hurry and went back to their classrooms. Nothing more was said of the matter, but Dr. Weet’s action put a permanent end to the regular penny pitching sessions—better than any stern discipline could have done.
His most notable accomplishments during his 22-year tenure as superintendent were the creation of one of the nation’s finest junior high school systems, then an urgent need to qualify youngsters for practical fields below the professions, and his leadership in maintaining the city’s high educational standards through the depth of the depression in the early 1930s. His final official act was to persuade the city that the future of youth was more important than the financial difficulties of 1933, and he obtained a $300,000 increase in the 1934 school budget.
He received outside recognition for excellence in two forms: tempting offers of other jobs in larger cities, which he turned down with uniform impartiality, and academic honors. In 1918 he received an honorary Ph.D. from Albany State Teachers College. In 1933, just before his retirement, the University of the State of New York broke precedent by awarding Dr. Weet. Another honorary doctorate—the first the Regents ever presented to public school superintendent.
Named to Surveys
Recognition also came with appointments to important survey commissions: Philadelphia public schools, 1921; Pittsburgh schools, 1927; national educational finance, 1921-23, and head of a privately endowed survey of depression effects on schools in the East, 1935. His recommendations usually carried the authority which brought enactment as a matter of course.
The University of Rochester, his alma mater, called him out of retirement in 1942 to become special consultant on education to Dr. Alan Valentine, then UR president. He counseled the university on meeting the special demands of the war years and on preparing for the postwar rush of students. In 1945, the job well done as usual, he returned to retirement—but not to the rocking chair.
He turned his attention to the history of his native Orleans County, devoting himself to research on the subject after he moved back to the place of his birth, Shelby. There, Dr. WEET and his wife, the former Ada Eleanor WEET, observed their 59th wedding anniversary on June 20.
Dr. WEET’s contribution to education was not confined to the public school level. In 1915, he was elected a trustee of the University of Rochester and served as secretary of the board. When he retired in 1951, the board made him an honorary trustee for life. He also served on the boards of the Rochester Theological Seminary, Rochester (now the Eastman) Dental Dispensary and the Mechanics Institute (now the Rochester School of Technology).
Rugged in Late Years
Even in his later years he retained his incisive mind and his rugged body. At 79, he dug himself out of his off-the track lodge in Shelby during a snow storm—to be able to attend a reunion of his West High "boys" in Rochester. Once there, he looked at them one by one—considerably grayer since their school days—and called them all by their first names without a single slip.
As recently as last May 12, Dr. Weet was honored by the community. On that day he was presented the 17th annual Rotary Club award for outstanding citizenship, receiving the tribute of many of his former associates.
He was a member of the executive committee of the State Committee of School Superintendents and the National Department of Superintendence. He held life membership in the National Education Association and was a former member of the YMCA Board of Trustees. In 1926, he served on the Governor’s Commission on School Finance and Administration. In addition, he was at one time a member of the board of managers of the State School of Industry and of the state examining board.
A Phi Beta Kappa member, Dr. WEET’s other fraternal affiliations included Kappa Phi Kappa and Alpha Delpha Phi. He also held membership in Oak Hill Country Club and the Fortnightly and University Clubs.
Besides his wife, Dr. WEET is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Duncan R. MacKENZIE, and two grandchildren, of Bridgehampton, L. I.; and two brothers, Irving and Frank E. WEET of Shelby.

A good man has fallen in Israel today-
One whom we’ve oft heard sing and pray,
And speak of the joys of sin forgiven,
Of his blessed hope of a home in Heaven.
As he spoke of his home beyond the skies,
His soul on wings would seem to rise-
And a power divine to him was given
As by faith he viewed his home in Heaven.
We have heard him pray for his children dear,
And saw on his cheek the falling tear
As with a trembling voice he plead,
That they to the Saviour might be led.
But those lips are cold and silent now,
And the cold death damp is on his brow;
His hands are folded across his breast,
With his dear wife he’s now at rest.
Yes, a good man has fallen in Israel to-day
A dear one from our midst has passed away;
But still we hear that trembling voice
Saying, sinner come, make Christ your voice.

A fatal case of accidental poisoning occurred at Eagle Harbor last Saturday morning about 11 o'clock, the victim being Mrs. John WESTON, who lived with her daughter, Mrs. A. PHIPPS. The old lady went into the pantry for lunch and took from one corner of a shelf a slice of bread which had been placed there with rat poison on it. She ate it without any hesitation and without the knowledge of any of the household. The mistake was not discovered until her daughter called her for dinner when she replied that she did not care for dinner as she had eaten a lunch. This being an unusual thing for her to do, Mrs. PHIPPS went into the pantry and discovered her mother's terrible mistake. Dr. Stokes was immediately summoned and did all that a physician could, but she was beyond all hope and died about 4 o'clock. Her age was 78 years. Mrs. WHALEN was a member of the M. E. Church of this place, and leaves beside her daughter, two sisters, Mrs. Sarah G. BEEKMAN and Miss Cornelia GROFF, of St. Johnsville, NY.
It is expected that the body will arrive tomorrow and the funeral will take place from her late home on Main street. The arrangements are not entirely completed but will be announced in the JOURNAL.
Mrs. Catherine G. WHALEN died in Clinton, Iowa, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. E. ARMSTRONG, January 3, aged 89 years. With the exception of the last two years, her long life has been spent in this village. After an illness of only a week, the end, which came quickly and quietly, found her with faculties unimpaired and ready to answer the call of her Heavenly Father. So there passed from this life one of those rarely beautiful spirits whose presence has made those around her the better for her living, and whose influence for all that is good will long abide as a memorial and a benediction.
Her true worth was best known and most clearly recognized by her intimate friends. To them there came a gracious privilege in knowing her so well in the quiet home-life which she lived so unobtrusively, without ostentation, “looking well to the ways of her household, 'always kindly considerate of others with thoughtful recognition of that which was good in them, shirking no responsibility, bravely meeting all that came to her of trial or sorrow; so her long span of years has come to an end without an enemy being known therein. Of her it could well have been said, “she opened her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue was the law of kindness.'
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Charles E. ARMSTRONG, two grandsons, Roscoe WHALEN and Carroll Emerson ARMSTRONG, of Clinton, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah G. BEEKMAN and Miss Cornelia GROFF, of St. Johnsville, N.Y.
Mr. and Mrs. ARNSTRONG, with their sons, came with the body, the sisters meeting them here, and the funeral service was held in the old home yesterday at 2 p. m., conducted by. Rev. W. A. Harris, pastor of the Methodist Church of which she had been a life-long member. Interment in Boxwood Cemetery.

David A. WHITE, 70, Dies; Former County Judge
David Aloysius WHITE, 70, whose long and colorful career in the practice of law led him
into W.N.Y. politics and gained him prominence, died last night at his home in the
Sheraton Hotel, Buffalo. Death for the Medina native and former Orleans County judge
climaxed a three-year illness which had progressed to a critical stage in recent months.
Judge WHITE followed Democratic politics with a keen interest and led his party’s banner

Beginning his legal career, Judge WHITE tried more than 200 law suits in a period of two years. Hc served a period as an adjuster for the Aetna Liability Insurance Co. after college, and for five years was resident attorney for the New York joint land stock bank. He also was resident attorney for the New York Title Mortgage Co. and in 1931 was attorney for the New York Banking Dept., for the liquidation of the Union Bank of Medina and Community Trust Co. of Middeport. Died: In Owoso?, Mich., March 17th, 1876, Mrs. Delia (Della?) Wickham, aged 45 years.
Nine years ago the Medina Tribune, speaking editorially of the
departure of Mr. WICKHAM and family for Michigan, spoke of his
"irreproachable character as a christian and a citizen;" of his life as
"pure and his business character as above reproach,” and regretted the
loss of such a citizen. Two years later Mr. WICKHAM was buried in the
Rocky Mountains, and last Sunday his widow was laid to rest in the cemetery
of our city. Left with six children she has faithfully kept her trust,
and has brought them up in the fear of Him into whose presence she has gone.
The children were all present, the eldest son arriving a few hours before
her death. Her suffering was intense, but death had lost its terror and the
last hour was peaceful. She made all arrangements for the burial and then
"fell asleep." A large circle of friends gathered at the funeral,
overflowing the largest church in this city. The children remain together,
except George, who returns to New York. The circle thus broken here, we
trust will be unbroken there.

Chester WILLIAMS was born Oct. 1848 the oldest son of Benjamin and Mariette WILLIAMS of Kenyonville N.Y. He died at his home June 20, following an illness of a month. He was one of the last survivors of A type once commonplace in American life; now rarely met and already almost forgotten.
He was the typical American farmer of the mid-nineteenth century. Some men change with the changing times: some of less pliable fiber belong definitely to the past, and when they live on into a present which they cannot apprehend or justly estimate they have the power of bringing the past with them: they recreate for us an age, a state of culture a type of Americanism which we might easily forget; and which it might be rather better for us to remember. The story of this man's life is in no respect dramatic or picturesque. It would have been in his day a commonplace ----a story told of thousands like him.
He was the son of American parents, of Revolutionary stock on both sides. His forbears couldn't start him in the race with the advantages of wealth or any of the ease and gace which it can buy. All they had to hand on to him was a heritage of health, of reasonably good ability, and character-character in a special aspect of fortitude and integrity. His father died before this man was seven. He was the oldest son in a family of four children; times were hard; the Civil War was soon to be fought. For this man the lines of his life were laid down before he had outgrown his boyhood. There can never have been for him any question of what he would do; he was to do all his life what he must. Circumstances constrained him. Quite commonly those who are deaf or indifferent to the commands of duty find it relatively easy to escape the grip of circumstances, but for this man there was never a time in his life when a sense of responsibility of obligation was not the dominating force which moved him. He was an obedient son, a faithful, devoted brother.
He exemplified most of the qualities which two generations ago were associated with the word American. He was capable of self-denial and of exertion beyond belief. There was no limit to his capacity for endurance. He was hard working, proud, self-reliant, independent to a fault; he was shrewd ---men of his stamp drove hard bargains, with a scorn of the weakling and the fool which was certainly not lovable but which did have a distinctly tonic effect, on the society of which they were a part. He was in no sense an easy man; but since he was more rigorous in his dealings with himself than he could possibly have been with any other person, that fact may be set down to just what it was---an evidence of strong will and singleness of purpose. The American of his type was above all else a realist. He did not see life whole-could not have been expected to do so---but within the very restricted range of his experience he saw it truly.
There was about this type of American a certain essential sanity which had its basis in a rough but fairly accurate sense of values, and an inimitable humor which is the undying enemy of shallow sentimentality and fuzzy mindedness. With men like him the extent of their knowledge may actually have been very limited but they were rarely the victims of delusions or false ideas. What they did know, was so. Their knowledge was grounded in fact. Experience was their control. In a sense this man's lot was hard and his life narrow. It was not, however without its compensations. He loved his land; he loved farming to the end of his life he was interested in and proud of his work It is the good fortune of very few men to spend a whole life---a long life---in that one spot which is to them the best conceiveable place the earth could offer, in work which at the end of a long and busy life, can still seem vitally interesting, vitually important.
There was to be observed in his life a certain unity, a design which is all too frequently lacking. It came from his having formulated very early a code by which he governed his conduct. He wished, at the end his life, to be able to say-"I done my best according to the light that was given me."
"Fear no more the heat of the sun,
Nor the furious winter's rages:
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone and ta'en thy wages."
We who knew him best make bold to hope that in that last accounting he will not be held an undeserving servant.
The Editor
The Orleans American Albion, N.Y.
Dear Sir:
I am enclosing check for $5.00 in payment for the paper, some of it arrears and the balance for
continuance.
The actual purpose of this note is however to comment on the obituary article headed Chester S. WILLIAMS. This is the most brilliant character analysis I have ever read, and I have read this one five or six times and am going to pass it around among my friends, men who make it their business to write and whose income is derived from writing.
I am a native of Orleans county, born and reared on the Ridge Road, where my father was born,
lived his 92 years and died; where my grandfather settled in 1817 and in his 91st year died and
is buried in a corner of the land he conquered from the wilderness.
I still remember the two Williams places. The Hank WILLIAMS place just west of the hamlet of
Kenyonville; the Chet WILLIAMS place east of what then was called Fairhaven, on the south side
of the Ridge Road. My boyhood recollection is that these were both places of character, and
that Chet WILLIAMS was a "hard" ' man, an estimate borne out in this obituary.
Will you please send me two or three copies of last week's American? I want to send one copy
to the Reader's Digest. I think they will very likely want to print it. And will you also give
me the name of the author?
Very truly yours,
Albert M. Sterling

A sad accident occurred Monday afternoon, at Weld & Hill's new(or saw?) mill, resulting in the death of James WILSON, a worthy citizen of this village.
He was at work in the mill, assisting in lowering timbers to what is known as the wheel pit. At the time Mr. WILSON held the end of a rope looped around the end of a timber, which being covered with a little snow caused the rope to slip and throw the weight suddenly upon him. He was immediately carried to his residence and all possible medical aid rendered to save him. But the shock was fatal, and after lingering in an insensible condition until an early hour Wednesday morning the remaining spark of life departed.

Mrs. Betsy WILTSE died January 15th, 1911, after a three days' illness, following a stroke of apoplexy. Mrs. WILTSE was the first daughter of Gardner BERRY. She was born in Bethany, N. Y., on January 30, 1826. In the spring of that year she came with her parents to East Shelby, where she spent her early life. In 1851 she was married to Reuben WICKHAM and moved to Michigan where she lived until Mr. WICKHAM's death in 1888. In 1890 she married Justin S. WILTSE, of East Shelby, and since Mr. WILTSE`s death in April 1909, she had made her home with her nephew, J. Gardner BERRY. It was a great source of comfort to her to know that she could come back to her old home to spend her last years. She was a good woman, appreciative of kindness, careful in her manner of life, firm of will, and modest in benevolent acts. The church will miss her, for in these latter days she was one of its best friends, She was the last of three generations, which brings a serious thought to her circle of friends. Still we must be helped by looking upon a good life well spent, and inspired to rise to the best in us as we see the record closed. The funeral was held January 18, 1911, from her nephew's home. Interment was in the East Shelby Cemetery beside her father and mother.

Peck of Troop A, state police, said the explosion occurred today at 6.30 a. m. According to their report, Mrs. Winslow rushed outdoors, where she was joined by one of her daughters, attracted by her screams.
The daughter extinguished her mother’s flaming clothing with snow, and the mother was taken to a doctor’s office and then to the Batavia hospital by ambulance. Her daughters, Marion and Dorothy, about fourteen and thirteen, were sheltered in the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Frank Crosby. Dorothy reportedly was suffering from the inhalation of smoke.
Frank Gilbert, a boarder, was also awakened by the victim’s screams and opened the kitchen door to face a “wall of flame.” He carried the victim’s 70 year-old invalid mother, Mrs. May ROWLEY, to safety. She is now in a convalescent home in Batavia. Gilbert, slightly burned, barely had time to dress, as the fire spread rapidly through the twelve-room wooden home.
(Note from Theda Powley Millis: Mrs. Mildred WINSLOW was Mildred ROWLEY, born in Kenyonville, buried in Alabama Cemetery.)
